Real talk I think raiding in WoW has jaded Jesse to ever want to deal with any pushback in a video game. And like I 100% get it. But it makes me think that raiding too long in WoW either turns you into someone who craves challenge in every game or someone who actively avoids any kind of challenge.
Duuuude, WoW raiding PTSD is absolutely real. There's a LOT of times where I'd be playing random stuff with a friend's guild and someone comes along and the MINUTE something goes wrong they start apologising and basically begging not to be yelled at or say they can just leave if we want. And to date those haven been 100% ex-WoW players. I personally avoided pretty much all engagement with "groups" for a long time, especially guilds.
My biggest beef with rts games is that the single player mode almost never lets you play with every toy in the inventory until the last one or two missions.
I did cheese malenia with the mimic tear, because reasons. But I did beat the nameless puppet after four hours with the wintry rapier and the puppet string. And yes, that's how you do. You just keep silent and internalize the stress to increment focus, and the boss became easy in the last ten minutes. There was an answer for every single one of his attacks. Probably, one of the best souls like bosses I have ever beaten. Lies of P, up there with Dark Souls 1 and Elden Ring. Also, post happy birthday, Jesse.
I revisit that The Letter playthrough every couple of years, currently halfway through it yet again :)

Love the podcast! Feels like the old times. I have no idea how much work it would be but could you please update the Spotify more often? I don't have RU-vid premium so can't listen to the podcast with the screen off (when walking, at work etc.).
RE: RTSs, my only real time spent playing RTSs these days is the StarCraft 2 Commander co-op missions, which I'd play a hell of a lot more if they'd kept updating it.
yeah, i always view darksouls games as a free for all with tactis for taking down bosses, anything goes! summoning, mimics, cheese strats, buffing up to nuke em, all is on the table for the kill, if its dead, you did it dont matter how you got there
1. Starcraft 2's story was sorta bonkers, but the actual gameplay and mission design is pretty much the hallmark of the singleplayer side of the genre. 2. DUNE Spice Wars is sorta a hybrid between RTS and 4X, but its multiplayer scene is deep enough to keep people playing, but casual enough to depend way less on a meta for fun, and is the first time I've felt that vibe in a multiplayer strategy scene in a while. Highly recommend.
Hanging onto glasses and jars? Ohhh i know this problem quite well. Except also applies to plastic container with Good lids and bags..my mom has much worst version of it. But i think it stems from older generation, post war parents(50s era) and how everything was reused and maintained. Just becomes an annoying clutter problem
@JesseCox you should get Dan Gheesling on the show. His elden ring melenia fight was legendary toking so long since he refused to level his vig (health) and still made every attempt an entertainment showpiece
I feel a bit bad because I like the shorter vids longer run series of stuff - like half hour to forty five min eps are great! I am still watching the longer ones, cause you rock Jesse (SGS is a blast!) but it can be a bit harder for me to schedule out time to enjoy a two hour plus vid. Not saying you have to change it - cause it sounds like I am in the minority - but that is my thoughts on it. Either way, I am happy as long as you keep doing vids and making me laugh!
Can you make an achievement for a game you produced that only triggers for very specific ending (preferrably non very intrusively)? I thought that is the literal point of achievements. To see what choices players make and what they get to see.
The conversation about gaming preferences makes sense. You've played games long enough to refine your style of gaming and skill level. Having others come along to gatekeep the "correct" way to play is not helpful.
I like the longer series damnit! I realize you're experience is correct, but damn, don't just never do long series anymore. Every now and then throw people like me a bone :)
Regarding the hidden endings and such. Isn't that what achievements are for, for developers. You can see how much people are into different aspects of your game or how many follow that story path based off achievement percentage. Gives you an insight into adjustments for sequels, right
I with Jesse about RTS games. The most fun I had with RTS games was early online era before there was a meta to learn because you didn't have esports and videos to learn from. Then shit got try hard and I've barely touched RTSes since. I think esports actually may have been what caused a huge decline in RTS games. The pros ruined it for the casuals.
Love it u2! Also, watching this while playing Diablo 4.. xD It just had an huge update, and after a year or so since release, it feels right. Guess if we squeeze Blizz enough they'll get back on it.
Characterising the ending they got in sucker for love as "horny Davis ending" is wholly unfair. What they got is "wholesome Davis ending" and Davis refused to go back and do the bad ending
I tried Starcraft 2 during the beta and got zerg rushed. Never played it online since then, but I do love to watch the tournaments. The only way to get to those ship battles is to either be good enough to get to the late game or play with friends where you can set up rules like no attacking till ten minutes into the game. Also the problem with SC2 is it is hard to manage the macro and micro parts of the game.
I tried to get chatGPT to solve the riddle Dodger said. Is this an actual riddle from the game? I don''t think this makes sense really, so did Dodger just come up with it on the fly? I suspect chatGPT the new versions of chatGPT could solve riddles in game since people probably asked about them and it has trained on that. I don't know if it can solve riddles it has no training data on. It would be interesting. The free version of chatGPT hasn't trained on any new information. You: solve this riddle: I was old once but now I am young. If I was red you could see my tongue. What am I? ChatGPT: The answer to the riddle is a candle. When it's lit, it's "young," but as it burns down, it becomes shorter and "older." If it were red, the wax melting could resemble a tongue.
Heroes and League are different though? The very base mechanics of lanes and a core and turrets are there I guess, but League has a lot of stuff that HOTS removed or changed and it's why I liked Heroes and never enjoyed League. The two biggest things for me are I can't stand the last hitting mechanic, and I hate the shop function. I tried to get into it with some friends but it just wasn't for me at all. I much prefer how Heroes handles things, and I like how there's so many maps with different objectives instead of the... one map. There are obviously League players that prefer League BECAUSE of these things, but a big draw for a lot of people with HOTS was how much more streamlined the game was in comparison and how it didn't do things the way League did. I am still sad about Blizz abandoning HOTS. edit: I see, you eventually go back and address this. I don't feel the same I guess, at no point when playing league did I feel like I was contributing anything meaningful or feel like "maybe I'm good at the game". The way everyone contributes to one XP pool is way more satisfying for me, and just the TLDR about this is that I just preferred how HOTS removed what to me personally feels like a lot of cruft I didn't enjoy. I think Blizz just did a bad job of trying to keep the game relevant, they really didn't try to advertise it in a way that Riot extremely excels at. Like I have no interest in League but I love a ton of the champions because Riot is always like "see this character, aren't they cool?"
ive been looking forward to jesse's ffxiv 1.0 video ever since he first talked about it making one but at this point it's been SO LONG that feels like it's never coming out.. like it was all just a lie or something
2% here too, still have saved the large playlist that someone else made for the SGS. When theres nothing else or dont want to see something else in another application, i just hit the list, and many times i have done it, just revisit it.
"I Was a Teenage Exocolonist" encouraged replays in an interesting way. It's a story heavy game that makes it impossible to see all story branches, relationships, developments, etc. in one play through (not uncommon). But they make it clear after you finish, that a replay will be different because the character will remember some things from the previous game. They can make new choices based on what they know...but also there are consequences (e.g. people thinking they're delusional). There's one big story change early on that shows how much will be different now that your character has foreknowledge. And that grows with each play through as you (and the character) experience new outcomes.
As someone who loved tracking the growth of Dodger's mug collection in the background of various videos, finding out she had to downsize that severely hit strangely hard. Deep down I knew there was no way she took that whole thing to the UK, but it still... I hope they all found good homes where they are cherished.
Happy Birthday, Jesse. I haven't seen the end of the episode yet, so it's completely natural to tell you happy birthday the day after the show was streamed, even though it might not yet be the next day for you.
i feel like the spine is one of the last things that could, if ever, be cyborgified. but i agree. at the very least it can be reinforced to hell and back, and that'd be a good start.
I'm very glad to be able to see this in my recommendations. Will be listening this on a nice saturday morning WEEKEND and reminiscing of the good ol days.
A shame because ultimately a good bossfight is nothing but the game mechanics coming together in a theatre for you to show off what you've been building up naturally through play. It's an essential element for good pacing in skill growth-based games. (Which is the type of game to avoid if you dislike this kind of process, look for stuff that isn't trying to "teach" a method of play.)
I will do something for everyone in this chat: give up on the special mountain dew bottles. Circle k had the purple lightning variety, and Walmart had the frostbite variety which were supposed to give double points. However, I got the bottles that said on there very labels that they were 2x points... And when I put in the codes, it only gave me 100 points per bottle. It turns out, only the bottles with the label saying 2x points and golden caps on those bottles, both are required to get the 200 points. So the label on the special varieties of bottles lies to you. White Caps are not going to cut it. However, the purple lightning is extremely tasty compared to most of the rest of them, so I drink it anyway.
Long time fan, rarely comment. Completely caught me off guard when Jesse said Heroes of the Storm didn't try to be any different from other MOBAS. Might be one of the most baffling takes I've heard on the channel in the 10+ years of watching. Wish you explained that more than just leaving that as is.
😱 Jesse! I have that jaw thing too! The dentist tried to shove my jaw back just like that. "He said let go of your jaw." And I'm like I'm not flexing it, I'm not moving it at all.
It always bums me out when I hear RU-vidrs and Streamers talk about the diminishing returns of playing a longer series. Bulk of what I watch these days tends to be that sort of thing and (no judgement mind you) it always pains me getting into watching someone play something like that only to leave it unfinished because the views were dropping off. One thing it has down however is make me VERY conscientious on how the beginning of a game goes. It's always fun suggesting games to RU-vidrs and Streamers, but nowadays before I ever do so I always find myself thinking "Does it get good within the first 1-2 hours? If not it's probably not worth bringing up."
Yeah there's only a few ways around this. Either the streamer has to be dedicated to the game themselves and simply not mind the viewer drop off for the duration of the playthrough, or they have to have a more consistent income, like a patreon combined with several concurrent long playthroughs (the keith ballard model) where people can be relatively assured that through polls their game will eventually be played in full.
