@@sandprather7898 A very good point. I will add that you provided the best definition of the resulting outcome. When they are allowed to perceive the interaction in their own way they fulfill their own destiny. It's funny but being a little older (49) I can still remember the times I was told how to act in society rather than pick the path that made me the most comfortable. Prolonged eye contact can get awkward... I find eye contact is effective when listening or trying to make a point, but don't be afraid to look at what's going on around you
@amaracea
@amaracea 3 года назад
This is very true. Most people tend to think in extremes, like “all eye contact or no eye contact there is nothing inbetween.” When I was diagnosed with aspergers, the psychiatrist told me I needed to work on looking people in the eyes when talking to them or listening to them. I brought up this point that it’s awkward to stare like a madman at people, so they told me maintaining eye contact doesn’t necessarily mean, you know, staring at someone like a madman. You can, and really should, look away a little bit maybe every minute or so, just briefly, just to let the other person know you haven’t fallen asleep with your eyes open while staring at them lol
@joshuadickson4333

Eye contact is difficult for one reason and one reason only: Because you consider yourself lesser than the person you are speaking to. That’s it. That’s the only reason. It is not a sign of disrespect, it is actually a sign of (misplaced?) respect. It stems not from rudeness but from a lack of self-confidence.

They, people like the Silent Generation, Boomers, and Gen X, were raised in generations that taught them not to reveal their true feelings and that if they’re misunderstood to blame the other person for not understanding them. This makes it look like they’ve got everything put together when in reality they’re just better at pretending than younger generations are.

Sometimes some people secretly disklike themselves and mentally internally punish themselves by smoking because they’ve lost inspiration-ambition and wether or not they smoke to give the appearance of looking tough or Kool; it may show lack of forgiveness or the need for a caring ear to help them heal. Then again abuse and hardships that children face may lead to these behaviours, I feel this way because I have found that clients in my salon speak openly and honestly when they are comfortable and yes respect Me. I support herbal Medecine; however smoking cannabis versus tobacco is different because of the chemicals in tobacco need a whole new discussion.

I appreciate it Pat, the eye thing I've always kinda knew & stuff but I personally desperately need to rebuild my confidence back up and passed the point it was when I was 15 and won my first sports championship as a starter and also got the MVP oh, and the sportsmanship trophy that year and every other year I got the sportsmanship trophy in that one league. So when I was talking to my boss I'm pretty sure it's the confidence thing of listen to some Jordan Peterson and he has the answer for me I just can't seem to get my family to be on board with positive reinforcement and encouragement no matter my efforts it never seems to matter I can give 110% and most of the time that will get me more negative feedback constantly and I think I'm aware of why that is, I can always learn more I reckon but when I was talking to my boss about a year ago over a small minor incident and it was something I just had no idea that I even did because it was something very minor but it was also something very very key in understanding. There was a Salesman guy that never did a good job to be honest but I never had his job so I can't say for sure that I could do any better but I worked on a beer truck and all of the other salesmen got along with their drivers and did a good job there wasn't a lot of empty holes the store managers wasn't bitching at us went while we was delivering the beer over empty holes and other things in the salesman's area but in my hometown and a gas station I went to quite a bit and do all the workers there, the cashier I was talking to she asked me where was this guy at she hadn't seen him in the past couple weeks and it was that salesman and this is after conversation for 2 minutes probably, & she what is mainly the only one talkin and it was very normal for every store we went to that that certain person sold they all bitched about this guy and nobody could stand in and I'm very nice I don't ever have any problems with people and I'm pretty sure I understand myself in that aspect to I'm very self-aware lol but I told that lady when she asked me where he was, "that I'm not exactly sure, I heard that he was demoted" & literally that was it and i guess she told that salesman and he went & ended up complaining to my boss which for almost 2 years, I hardly got to speak to him. Mainly cuz of Me avoiding him as much as possible, over fear & aniexty. So as I'm talking to him it is very hard to look him in the eye even though I told the truth and I couldn't even remember I said that because it was so minor but he explained why it wasn't good and I moved on from it but that interaction could not have helped me whatsoever because I'm telling you I damn near cried and I've never really known how to deal with that... have any suggestions? I think a mentor to move in with would be amazing for like 6 months maybe a year preferably. I have no problem with pulling my own weight and not taking a dime that I haven't earned. I don't have hardly anyone except my two boys that look up to me and I know they see that lack of confidence & stuff. Other than that Pat im the best damn 27 year old Dad there is in my entire state i feel like. Im proud of it more than anything else.

Children are definitely the best communicators when given the opportunity without interruption or lecture, just a normal conversation with emotional tangents, exciting and elaborate loop dee loops, and an innate ability to confound with logic all in one conversation. I am not sure when i heard or learned it, but growing up in south africa looking people in the eyes i regarded as mildly aggressive. Or i may have miss interpreted not looking at animals in the eyes to avert an attack? I should probably have verified that philosophy decades ago. Whatever the reason, i had an inability to look at people in the eyes, though i can perceive without looking. I may have learned that in judo? I knew to much eye contact even in the u.k. made people uncomfortable and not enough would leave them feeling under appreciated. At some point i learned a wee trick, look at each eye in turn, then the mouth and back to the eyes. Got some strange looks on the occasion till i started to pay attention to other facial proportions of those i engaged in conversation with. To this day i would still have trouble telling you the eye colour of the person i spent hours conversing with. My language and imagination isn't as colourful or descriptive enough to say the suspect had the complexion and features like chicken skin (i heard once). I have got a bit better at paying superficial attention, the thought simply never crosses my mind in the moment.

One of the things i notice with myself, is that I simply forget to look people in the eye. My mind just keeps wondering and it takes a few minutes till I get focused in mentally on the person. When our mind is riddled with anxiety and other issues, it's hard for us to concentrate and be present in the moment with the people we are talking to.

MOSt good communicators are BORN that way to an extent. Good communicator makes "connections" & listen, talkers just talk. i HATE the line "fake it till you make it", i prefer "believe it till everyone else does". Anyone that's convinced of something will probably believed what they were saying or doing. I can't sell you a old car just for the sake of making $$$ but i can sell that car if there's something i believe in worth my effort ! i WON'T "keep" helping someone if the "communication" is closed, kind of like you played out with your son. oh, & the eye thing definitely WORKS !

Thanks again Pat for sharing. You're one of the greatest communicators I've met. Perhaps my other mentors and former bosses Rick Goodwin and Marvin Gurley were also some of the best.

This is excellent advice and I have always been conscious and aware of eye contact while listening to others. It is one of my peeves when I am talking and the person is distracted all over the place. It makes me feel dismissed and unimportant. Yes, men are horrible with looking at a woman when talking, its highly annoying and creates anxiety. I find that even my girlfriends do it as well....it is rude imo.
