The Russell T Davies (RTD) era from 2005 to 2010 rebooted Doctor Who after 'the Wilderness Years', with Christopher Eccleston playing The Ninth Doctor and David Tennant playing The Tenth Doctor. Murray Gold composed music throughout, and beyond into the Steven Moffat era. This is Thomas' video essay about the creative partnership between RTD and Murray Gold, and why he's excited for their return.

It's crazy how a 14 year gap seems so small when it's been back for 17 years now. Compared to how long the shows been around in total now, the wilderness years just feel like a blip at last 😍

As a musician, Murray Gold is what made me want to write for film music. Listening to his astounding creations of motifs and themes and how he twists them and reharmonises them inspires me to not stop until it’s perfect. For me, he’s the prime example of how to write for characters

Murray Gold’s score and general approach to scoring the series really made modern Doctor Who. He didn’t shy away from using the music like a fanboy would in certain scenes. Aside from his amazing pieces his scoring gave epic dimensions to a child-like character without breaking him. It’s exactly how to create amazing memories for children and how to bring adults to tears.

RTD's run had better focus, i feel, than Moffats and certainly Chibnalls. Perhaps because he's more skilled at writing for tv than those two but the seasons each had an arc that took the main characters from a starting point to an end point that felt pre-planned. Individual stories might have little clues of what was to come in the finale but stood up on their own. During Moffats time i feel he tied himself up in knots and we ended up with two years of "who is River Song?'" and two years of "who is Clara?" to the detriment of each season and of each individual story. As for Chibnall, the stories, direction and acting all seemed flat. We went from RTD's world where the companion was the audience's window into the doctor's world and ultimately able to be as necessary to the story as the doctor, to Moffats world where the companions became the main protagonist despite never being fully rounded characters, to Chibnalls world where the companions are unimportant compared to the doctor, who isnt very interesting themselves and indeed spends much of the time explaining what is happening to the companions/audience. I'm sure that better focus, tighter scripts and superior acting is just round the corner though...

"Who is Clara" was only a detriment to series 7. Once she was an actual character in series 8 and 9, it worked a lot better. I feel like Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman allowed Moffat to focus on what Davies got right. It was human again. For a while. Chibnall killed all the goodwill that Moffat had eventually earned.

I never that Amy was the focus in her episodes. I still think that Rory Williams is the main companion in the 11th Doctor era because of his character development.

Everything was meticulously planned in RTD’s run as well. 10’s first episode booted out Harriet Jones which set up the series 3 finale and the End of Time with the Master, and the series 4 finale with Harriet’s sacrifice. Torchwood was series 2’s drip feed, the stolen planets, and yet filler episodes were perhaps the best episodes of them all. Midnight, Blink, Silence in the Library, Family of Blood.

I've always loved how truly human the RTD era is, the focus on regular ordinary people, it's the heart of the show. There's numerous scenes where The Doctor speaks so highly of regular human routines, of the things many of us take for granted. My favourite being in Father's Day, where he asks how the bride and groom met and shows his appreciation for it "street corner, 2 in the morning, taking a taxi home. I've never had a life like that... Yes, I'll try and save you" It's stuff like that, that makes the RTD era truly beautiful.

well made video, the music of this era was incredible. Gold continued to provide great music with Moffat but theres something special about how well integrated it was with the RTD era.

As much as I enjoyed Christopher Eccleston's short run, I feel like David Tennant was really the obvious choice to draw people in and make them fall in love with the Doctor in the modern era. Dashing, charming, good looking --- I mean, what more could you want in a sci-fi superhero? What really draws ME to David Tennant's Doctor, though (apart from his excellent performances of course), is that human quality RTD's writing injected into the character. Like yeah, watch one random episode of Ten's run and you might think he's just a run of the mill hero, but he's not. Ten is SOOO complicated and SOOO flawed. Yes, he has this way of seeing the beauty and the excitement in everything, and he has such a great capacity for love. But he's also selfish, short-sighted, impulsive, arrogant, and hypocritical. And I think the fact that RTD and David Tennant were able to put all those qualities on display while still presenting a character people could care about and root for is notable. At the end of the day, I find Ten to be a very tragic version of the character. One who's broken up by war and trying to find a sense of meaning and belonging among beings who can never begin to understand the depths of the things he's seen and done. His friends help remind him what he fights for, but he loses them all in the end --- often due to situations he directly or indirectly caused. It's quite sad to watch his run from beginning to end and observe the changes in his character over time.

But overall he didn’t make a lot of people fall in love with the the doctor a lot of watchers became Tennant fans not fans of the show cause he was the show’s Edward Cullen were girls fell in love with David and only watched for him cause I see countless people talk about who they left when he left saying they never became fans of the show but became fans of him in comment sessions cause they weren’t willing to give the brilliant Matt smith a chance and I say Steven moffat was the golden age of the show cause he brought back the niche science fiction fell of the show where u actually had to pay attention to the episodes cause of not knowing what could be a link to season’s arch while it was under Steven where the show was gaining a more international audience having it being switched from syfy channel to bbc America here in America where it remained until the Disney+ deal was announced I agree Russell was the one who brought the show back but could have done it without it feeling like twilight 5 years before twilight and then ramping up that feeling after twilight came out

@@kevin10001 I'm sure there were those who watched just for David Tennant, but I imagine there were many people who stuck around and enjoyed other eras of the show as well. I've heard plenty of individuals say they left after Matt Smith too because they didn't like Capaldi and thought he was too old --- or people who dropped out of the fandom after Capaldi because they didn't like Jodie Whittaker. It seems to me like that's just the way things are with Doctor Who. The show is constantly changing, and not everyone is going to stick around for every change.

@@kevin10001 first RTD era was the golden age, not Moffat. and no, the show wasn't good just because of David Tennant. it was also good writing. David Tennant played other characters that weren't the Doctor in the show as well and guess what, people don't care about them as much. Both Rickey and Mickey were played by the same actor and I rather consider Rickey as much more charming and hot. and I wasn't exactly ready to give Tennat a chance because of how much attached I was to Christopher Eccleston, but only one episode made me fall in love (half way through, not the beignning) while Matt Smith on the other hand, I love him as an actor and I was kinda excited for him, to see if I can love his role as the Doctor just as much every other of his strong roles. that didn't happen. so, saying that it was only love for Tennant that kept everyone, just is a sign of pettiness. don't think people are like you.

Somehow more nostalgic than the show itself, are those production notes from DWM before the show came back. I remember poring over them for clues on the train home from school (making sure to sit in a different carriage to my classmates so they wouldn’t disturb me or know I was reading a nerd rag)

I love how you became emotional in the second part of the video 💗 as someone who didn't watch this show at the time of airing and only watched it recently, which means no nostalgia effecting, I also say this era is also the golden age! And I didn't just started watching it for Tennant, I fell in love with the show in the exact series 1 and became attached to Christopher Eccleston the way I thought I was going to resent Tennant for replacing him, but no, only one Christmas special was enough for me to fall in love with him and that alone says a lot. some people try in a petty way to bring this era down because of what a disappointment Davies turned out to be in the new era but honestly, my answer to them is, then we should hate every masterpieces in the world only because of their creator. like how Eric Kripke who was the show runner for the most popular era of SPN. if somehow Eric Kripke does something everyone dislikes, we should just disregard the masterpiece which created for the first five seasons of SPN entirely? I don't think so. so Davies and those people can say and do whatever they want. doesn't make this era and what its cast and brilliance it had, any less of a golden age.

I actually think the 'Zog Monsters' pitch is one of the things Davies got wrong. Part of the beauty of classic Who was the ability to empathize with something utterly alien. I don't think the new series has ever really achieved that.

well, I'm sorry that I can't really have sympathy or even feel related to characters who act like they have only a simple injury when their planets gets destroyed, with all of their species which they grow up with and knew their whole life being gone! which is exactly what some characters from classic era and original saga of Star Wars behaved like even animals will behave in much more relatable and sympathetic way than these characters

Nine was totally an extension of Eight. The "down to earth, energenic" character is absolutely Eight. Remember that Eight went to radio after the 1996 TV movie and is still running.

The golden age happened during Tom Baker's first 5 seasons or so. Some of the best writing along with a great interpretation of the character and great direction. I've watched Classic Who and New Who so I given both eras an equal shot.

I'm old enough to remember the steady build in the wonder that is still The Classic Who. It did indeed reach its nadir with Pertwee and Baker 1, but you can't have watched Troughton and recognized that they stood on the massive shoulders of that tiny Doctor. All that said? As did 2-4, 9 and 10 succeeded by embracing who we were in 2005-2010, as did 12 and 12. Russell T Davies brought the Doctor home, and Murray Gold welcomed him with what may be the best scored television series of all time bear none.

Personally the first 4 series are gold to me. Everything after that felt kinda different in a less than impressive way. I didn't hate Matt Smith, but the writing felt so much more detached from the first four series.

I think I agree with you! I absolutely love particular episodes in the Smith/Capaldi eras, and I think series 10 hung together really well. But for me it didn't quite seem to click into gear in the way that the RTD era did. (Thomas)

@@TheShallowProclamation 100%, everything felt connected and grounded in reality and Russell turned it into a franchise with TSJA and Torchwood but when Moffat took over everything felt less connected and more of a mess. 11 and 12 were great just the stories let them down.

Its because the overarching interconnectedness of the stories felt unnatural with Steven Moffatt. I would say that Steven Moffat wrote the best episodes of Doctor who but not story arcs. To me personally though it was the companions that made Moffats run feel 'worse'. RTD had 4(ish) seasons (1,2,3,4,specials) and 3(ish) companions (maybe count Wilf) set mainly for one doctor. Moffat had 6 seasons (with 6 and 7 being split in half so sorta 8) and only had 3(ish) companions (Amy and Rory counted as one) as well. Maybe just me but Amy and Rory overstayed there time on the show and same with Clara.

There's been so many stories and episodes to absorb since the RTD era first aired and I love each of the eras and Doctors for the weird and wonderful, different contributions to the show's canon since it returned in 2005 (except perhaps Chibnall's era - I didn't particularly enjoy that for the most part and it's not one I plan on revisiting very often in the future). However there's just something about RTD1 that I will love so fondly forever I think. Predominantly that's probably nostalgia talking because Doctor Who was my one and only show as a kid, especially between 2006-2010, but RTD is just unique, I feel, in his ability to write humanity and meaningful dialogue. Yes, Moffat could do sad and funny, often at the same time, but his episodes were often so convoluted with technobabble, the rawness of that humanity was lost. Chibnall tried to emulate RTD's approach but he ended up writing his pitiful dialogue because the characters he had created were so lacklustre and generic. Similarly, Tennant will always be my favourite Doctor. The man has a thousand facial expression and he doesn't even need to talk, just a face he makes can make you burst into tears. Murray was definitely at his strongest during RTD1. I watched the 2013 Proms with my dad the other night that I still had recorded. I don't think I'd watched it properly before and the music was good, don't get me wrong, but it was all so recent for the most part. I then stuck the 2008 Proms on and the music just sent a chill through me. So many strong music pieces in those first four series, beautiful and they will stay with me forever.

trust me, it's no way Nostalgia reason! I'll chose this era and Tennant over anything else and I only watched the show recently. I want to watch again and again and this era is where I can confuse it by being completely written in present time (or not as old as the date says) that's how much timeless it is

An interesting - and unexpected - video, which makes some insightful points as well as conveying Thomas’ love for the first RTD era. I haven’t watched any of those episodes since the original transmission, though I plan to do so again before the two of you start reacting to them to see if my opinion changes. As it stands, it is an era I have very mixed feelings about - for every outstanding episode, there always seemed to be another with overblown bombast and emotionalism just round the corner, and I never cared for the elevation of the Doctor to “lonely god”, or the self-indulgent, drawn out nature of Tennant’s departure. Still, RTD undeniably made his version of the show connect with the audience, and for all his faults he deserves credit for making the show appointment viewing again. As for Murray Gold, I must admit that I don’t generally notice the incidental music much, though his fondness for overblown choirs became a bit tiresome. Still, credit to Thomas for highlighting some of his more subtle work.

Woah, the fishy boys get serious for a minute. Excellent review. I love Murray Gold's music but think his eleventh Doctor theme is his best followed by strange strange creatures from series 3. I think the RTD era gets better as it progresses and very often it’s his work on the overarching stories and characters that work better than some of his individual episodes. I prefer the 11th Doctor and the timey wimeyness and comedy of the Moffat era although Donna and Wilf will forever be my favourites of Nu Who and I can’t wait to see them back for one last hurrah.

Rewatching this video a few days after RTD retconned Davros as a normal able-bodied man because it would be too problematic these days to show him as "disabled. He then spent the weekend mocking the fans who called him out, and actively insulted them on twitter. I've been a fan of Doctor Who for over 50 years, I even tried to watch during the Chibnall/Whittaker abomination. But I'm done with the show. I'm not even going to bother watching the specials. It's classic Who only for me going forward, as far as I'm concerned Doctor Who ended in 1989.

Bloody bastard! Didn't expect to be needing tissues watching The Shallow Proclamation! Seriously though this was amazing, and yes - This was certainly a golden age. I think to be fair the momentum continued on into 11's run - whilst there was undoubtedly a shift, Moffat's early era was not too dissimilar to RTD, and certainly if the golden age is based on public sentiment, I'd say 10/11 was the peak for modern Who. Murray Gold... I love him and hate him. I want to hate him a lot more, but I love him too much. Well done.

I believe the downhill slope started all the way back when the beast below aired. That was the first story where I thought what was this? Then we had the new colourful Daleks and I remember thinking wow this is bad. Your right out was the 2010 series where it slowly started changing. Now in 2023 the show is pretty much unrecognisable from what it was from 2005 - 2010.

@@TheShallowProclamation This is 1989 back in the classic series mate we are on the final chance which is a sad thing to say but it can’t get any lower than where we are now. Politics and the current agendas going on is close to killing Doctor Who it’s all very sad but it’s all in RTD hands now 👍

@@TheShallowProclamation RTD is a very brave man taking the show back on at this point on a let’s face it damaged franchise. I respect him so much though I honestly believe if RTD hadn’t agreed to return at this moment in time Doctor Who would be gone again

The timeless child storyline was unnecceptable. Us fans can accept a lot but not a damaged Doctors history. Stupid move that needs retconned out of existence

RTD was good, but under Moffat and Matt Smith it became global, and of course Murray Gold played a heavy part in that. You can't think of Amy and The Doctor without thinking of Amy's theme, or the 11th Doctor's theme, everyone knew who they were, they were like Rock Stars.

That’s what I say cause moffat brought the show back to a niche science fiction feel that I like cause it wasn’t about making an audience fall in love with an actor like with Russell it was about making the audience fall in love with the show I found the show under Matt smith and Steven moffat mainly cause the show was moved from the syfy channel the Russell era to bbc America here in America and I have went back and watched the Russell era and still feel the twilight feeling on it even though it started 3 years before twilight

yeah, global, so global that the Doctor turned into a sexualized version of himself with most disgusting sexual jokes, women all being fantasies of one man, Amy going through the worst kind of traumas which a woman can ever go through and remain unfazed by it because her role as a companion is more important then being a character, storylines that have war with themselves what a global which sounds like a nightmare I wish I had never seen👎👎👎👎

The RTD Tennant era is not my cup of tea, never has been. IMO RTD is great at emotion, and characters, but weak on sci/fi, and too popularist for my taste. As for David Tennant the actor, I think he's great. He also seems like a decent bloke, but The tenth Doctor was my least favourite until Jodie Whittaker. Too human, too zany and matey. I don't think he shows any alien like qualities, and I absolutely hated the 10 - Rose dynamic. As you can imagine I don't hold out much hope for RTD's return as I can see another matey super friendly human style doctor, and a return to focus on companions families, friends & boyfriends and OTT emotional scripts punctuated by Murray "Tug at the heartstrings" Gold. I know I'm in an infinitesimal minority when it comes to this, but I grew up loving the more austere Seasons 18, 19 & 20 under Bidmead's script editing. And I also want an asexual Doctor, something RTD is incapable of writing.

I don’t agree on the not showing any alien properties, I think the way he attempts to grasp humanity reflect his un familiarity also because it a post time war doctor the attachments he holds on to make a lot of sense but of course to each their own I can definitely see where you’re coming from with to much romantic undertones and relationships even tho I did enjoy it

Not really, very Americanized; lots of romance and predictable. Unless your name is "Rose", the TARDIS was like an exclusive club that not everyone could get into.
