Her drumming was always amazing, but her FITNESS seemed other-worldly. She could just hammer with huge, complicated, syncopated body movement for a long, long time and seemingly she didn’t even breathe hard. Crazy. Real entertainer.
That reminds me, I have an old interview with her on VHS, recorded from television, and in it she mentions how drumming is, physically, good for your heart.
When I was younger and taking drum lessons my dad took me to see Sheila E live for my first concert and I was blown away. A memory I’ll never forget. R.I.P. Dad ❤
I feel rather strongly she should take a sabbatical from performing. She needs to completely focus on Christ. I hope she takes heed to this. God has so much more for her. Get out of the spotlight Sheila.
Berklee College of Music Percussion Festival 2004 - we were in the auditorium watching Giovanni Hidalgo and Horacio Hernandez perform their duet pieces. Giovanni kept waving off-stage and eventually a stage hand brought out a set of timbales and placed them between the two....who strolls on stage...Shelia E. She must have been in town for another gig because it was not part of the program. They played for a while then started trading fours...after one of Giovanni's flourishes she dropped the timbale sticks and matched him all over the timbales with her hands. The whole place lost its shit, most baddazz thing I've ever seen. After the show, half of us looked for a practice room, the other half probably just quit playing, lol.
I knew she was a legend, but that clip when Prince took a break... daymmmmm!!!!!! She's a beast. She's so right about learning when not to play. That's top tier advice and applies to all music and musicians.
You know, one of the issues I have with so many otherwise talented drummers is that overplaying thing. Sometimes, there's just too much going on, like the drummer can't control his/her emotions.
@@PeteNice29 I used to DJ and would often find the same with MCs. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. That space can make what you do add much more meaningful.
Sheila E is the GOAT When I first heard play back in the 80s just wow knew I was was listening too one of the all time greats Feel her own unique style drums Congo’s Timbales she took percussion to a whole new level also vocals sing 🎵 and play as a old Congo’s player rank her one of the greatest players both male and female precisionest
Sheila E is a phenom ahead of her time. Women drummers were relatively unheard of during her time. And to do it at the level she did? Man! I have no words, just feelings of amazement and thankfulness for what she brought to the world of drums and percussions. Just love her energy and creativity!
Before Marvin Gaye played with Sheila there was Ms. Bobbye Hall on "Inner City Blues" and "Let's get it on". She made solo records also. She played with everybody from Bill Withers to Dylan!
I've been a fan of Sheila's ever since her debut album. I love her first few albums and have watched the Romance 1600 live concert video probably more times than I can count. Ridiculously-talented drummer/percussionist/singer/performer. Awesome to see that Drumeo is recognizing her. 👍
When I grew up, Sheila E and Phil Rudd were my two main examples of what to do with a kit. 40 years later, I've managed the Rudd-part. Can't get up to her level, but that's okay. You can't beat a goddess.
It's about dang time you guys feature her. When I was a teenager in the 80's, I would walk to the local video store and get her and Prince's VHSs. This was the greatest stuff.
Wow, just wow. Had seen her play before, but didn't know the true range of her talent. Well, here I am, 62, just got some drums, playing at home and having a great time. Wish I'd done it 50 years ago!
She rocked so hard on the Prince gig. Amazing show. It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night is a standout..her rapping was incredible. LOVE HER. House Quake is RAD!!
What’s funny too is it’s really only within the last year or so that drumeo started having a lot of metal drummers on. I remember from 2013 to about 2019, there would be one metal drummer for every 10 jazz fusion/ RnB/latin drummers. That used to be about 90 percent of the lessons hosted on drumeo. And also alot of the clinic drummers that no one has really heard of, yet have been on 8 zillion albums lol
Sheila is actually 10 death metal drummers in disguise. The power behind every beat is absolutely phenomenal. She truly is one of the greatest. Thank you Sheila and Drumeo.
I consider myself incredibly blessed to have been able to see her play live a few different times with Prince, as well as solo, and with her father and brother in a small club in San Francisco. Absolutely amazing to see her play live.
I've had a crush on Sheila E since the early 80s. Such an amazing drummer, such a gorgeous woman who today, has never sounded (or looked!) better. So funky.
She is amazing. Great on drums and percussion. One of my fave Prince drummers. The others are Michael Bland (that I hope to see here someday) and the late great John Blackwell.
The Goddess of Percussions Sheila E is one of my all time favorite musician. She Beautiful, Super Talented, Humble, with the right touch of Fire, and Wise in her approach to music. She truly understands musicianship. The power of we and everyone has a part, no matter how small, is part the success of the song, the band, the unity. I was bless to see her many times. Also her Father,Uncle ,Brother, with Carlos Santana, Tito Puentes and her many Artist that she grace with her dynamic energy. You are the Best of the Best Goddess. Bless You. ❤❤❤❤❤
I can sing pretty well, and play drums pretty well, but I can't do them at the same time. So I'm very impressed by how Sheila E does both together, incredibly well. Legend.
I remember her from when she was on the charts in the 1980s but hadn’t really heard about her backstory until now. Really interesting video! A very accomplished woman in a field dominated by men. Powerful!
I was in 10th or 11th grade when "Glamorous Life" was released. I was an aspiring drummer (I eventually played drums and percussion professionally for a few years). I used to race home from school to sit in front of the TV, hoping to catch her video. That was my first introduction to Latin percussion, and she opened up a whole new world of music and rhythm for me
Love her❤ Great how she tells girls or women that it's never too late! Buy some drums a play them at home! What an inspirational human with incredible energy!
My first concert was Prince's Purple Rain at the Tacoma Dome. Sheila E. opened and she killed! I still remember her doing a lap dance on someone and everyone freaking out---not a common thing to see in those days. Sheila slays.
I love her!!! Everything about her!!! Phenomenal percussionist, drummer, vocalist, dynamic performer and she's very intelligent/perceptive, articulate, has such a pleasant, unpretentious personality and is just so naturally coooool!!!! I also admire the family DNA, connection, relationship and common percussive interest with her father and brother! Keep it goin girl!!
Thanks for another great tribute to another legendary artist. Have been into Sheila's work since the late 70s, when I first heard her on Billy Cobham's Magic. She and the enire Escovedo clan are just the best people.
Sheila E is talented beyond description. I have been watching her rock the house since the 80's. Sheila E can never be lesser, Sheila E rocks the best under pressure. Love her. Period! No one will ever front on her talent.
Thank you @Drumeo and @BrandonToews this was such a cool video. And short of seeing the drummers themselves play their tunes and tell their story, I can't think of a better way to honor, elevate, and pay tribute to some drummers that may deserve a lot more respect and credit than they currently receive. I love this "genius" series you all do.
OK.. what to say first about this tribute! How much underrated Prince is, how toxic music industry is or can be, how much Ringo cashed out Beatles fame, how much deep Sheila's career is (I had no idea), how good connections gives you jobs, OK talent is one thing, network is another! how talented this girl is.. not to mention how much well educated! I think she had Berklee music education (I think) 🤔 And Brandon didn't even touch her later works f.ex. Santana, Kravitz! Wow a tone of information here! Great video tribute.. a bounce of music monsters in a single video :) good job 👍 :D
Thank you, Drumeo, for an incredibly well put together video. I had no idea this clearly remarkable human existed until today. I'm still not sure she does to be honest, having watched that -- she seems too talented to be real. Such beautiful playing and performance, and an evidently beautiful and indomitable soul to boot. You've given me quite the playlist with this one! Thanks again.
OK so playlist update: everything Sheila E. touches turns to gold, and / or the best just recognise and seek out the best. But literally everything I'm listening to here is fucking DOPE.
Heh.. those clips from Sheila being drummer for Prince at the start of the video seem to come from the Sign of the Times tour... I was at that concert. Sheila is one of the most underrated drummers and percussionists on the planet for as far as I'm concerned. She is really really good.
Love Sheila E.! Absolutely no one like her. Worldclass artistry and showmanship unmatched til today. Talk about breaking the glass ceiling with a stick! A true inspiration to all boys and girls. Thanks Drumeo for the great tribute!
This was awesome! Sheila E. was actually the first person I saw perform live! It was October 1986 and for my 14th birthday, my mom took me to see Lionel Ritchie at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. Sheila E. was the opener. While my memory of the show is a bit fuzz all these years later, I do remember being blown away by Sheila's talent, energy, and beauty (hey, cut me some slack, I was 14!).
Sheila E is freaking awesome!! She used to do a weekly live on RU-vid and it was fantastic!! Haven't seen them for a while, I hope she's still doing them...
Thank you for bringing us THE SHEILA E. Fans this great documentary. I truly enjoyed every minute of it. She is not only an amazing musician and a brilliant and beautiful talented woman. God Bless her soul! Much Respect and Love
Interesting note... she wasn't just the drummer for the Sign O the Times tour. She was actually the musical director for the band. In essence, she hired herself as the drummer for that band. 😊
I love her unstoppable energy and Fire as a drummer, percussionist and leader!…and does it all in High Heels!! Sheila E is truly amazing! LOVE her!🔥🔥❤️❤️
THAT'S WHY IT'S IMPORTANT FOR ME NOW TO READ LINER NOTES ON THE RECORD COVERS TODAY WHEN I'M RECORD SHOPPING. SHEILA I HAD NO IDEA YOU WENT BACK THAT DEEP WITH THE GROOVES! YOUR DISCOGRAPHY IS BEAUTIFUL! PEOPLE, PAY ATTENTION TO OLDER MUSIC CUZ YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED FOR PLAYERS OF THIS BEAUTIFUL ART WE CALL MUSIC.
Ms E is truly a legend!!! I grew up listening to everything from rock to gospel, to latin, to thrash metal. I never realized how versatile she really is. Not to mention she always looks so beautiful.
Thanks for turning me on to that album. All I can say is wow.... Just wow! She has definitely matured as an artist and her skill is undeniable. Intellectual ear candy of the kind that the best musicians in the world are listening to and learning from. That album tickled my ears and hit me in the ❤! Thanks again brother!
WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW I FEEL IGNORANT FOR NOT KNOWING THIS ICONIC LEGEND AND THE LEVEL OF ENERGY IS INCREDIBLE!!!! STRONGER THAN A MAN, WHAT A GOOD SUMMARY OF HIS STORY, THANK YOU FOR THIS DOMUMENTARY OF HIS STORY, FOR ME IT IS THE BEST VIDEO OF Drumeo, simply Epic in every way
That's the strangest thing. Someone asked the question of the who the greatest drummer of gen x is. I don't even listen to much of the music she's been a part of, but she was the first to come to mind. Next morning, I see this. 🤔
I owe Shiela E for getting me into drums. Thank you Sheila! On the other hand, my mom quickly transitioned me to trumpet…gee, thanks mom. Getting my first job at a radio station as a DJ, I owe Casey Kasem and learning the guitar, from my high school friends. Falling flat on my face as a musician. I blame myself. Never give up on a dream, unless there is a higher power that makes you stop. Thanks Drumeo!
She is the best drummer I’ve ever seen live and that was just with congos. I’ve played for 20 years and I couldn’t even musically understand how awesome it was. It was simply like listening to the ocean, I couldn’t focus on every splash and had to just take in all the waves of musical notes. Outstanding player!
Sheila is genuinely one of my favorite drummers of all time. The fact that she could do all those things on the timbales while singing is just phenomenal, and something I aspire to do. Plus, she plays drums in high heels!!!
When most people go to rank greatest drummers of all-time, I feel Sheila gets overlooked because she's a female. If the list of historical drummers were put in front of people before the started ranking, I belive she would easily come in the top 10. She's in my top three. What other famous drummers rip at not only the drum set, but all purcussion instruments? She's perhaps tops if it's an all-time percussionist (kit + all other percussion) ranked list. Her talents and skills are truly remarkable.
