The GENIUS Way Tottenham Came Back Against Man City

Tottenham scored a late equaliser to draw 3-3 with Manchester City this weekend, with pundits still baffled by Ange Postecoglu's open attacking plan. But with Spurs being saved by a late refereeing howler, why do they seem incapable of taking their foot off the gas??

It was incredible to see Sonny transitioning from a left winger to central striker. He’s an amazing player and a proper leader, captain. Who leads by example. I saw the game last night against City and Sonny never stopped running and kept pressing through city players.

It was a no-brainer having Sonny striker. He’s got the finishing of a world class striker, he’s a true forward. He had a decent game alongside Kulusevksi, Lo celso and other players. We weren’t amazing but most of our players pulled through in the important moments. And that Kulu header 🤩 I think he’s super underrated. He’s ran the most in the entire league! And he barely gets subbed off, insane stamina and perseverance

It’s a myth that Ange doesn’t adapt. When they had difficult playing out against the press against Man Utd. The full backs ceased their inverting and went in a wing back position which allowed to take control. Similarly situation against Arsenal Sarr dropped deep to the right full back position to allow the team to play out against the press. Then there is substitution including Højbjerg to add more defensive control in midfield. Ange makes lots of tactical adjustment. However he doesn’t compromise fundamental style of football which is similar to most top class coaches

I do think Bissouma dispossession and Spurs third goal are two sides of the same coin. Bissouma tried to dribble pass three players and were dispossess and conceded a goal. However for Tottenham last goal Oliver Skipp had three Manchester City players trying to press him, he dribble past one player and made a progressive pass that led to the goal. I don’t think you can condemn the former and celebrate the latter. If Ange encourage the team to play this way it is of the hope that the latter moment outweighs the former moment but you have to take the dispossession as a side effect of the style of play

Wish Spurs had bought another CB in the summer. Missing one of Romero and especially Van De Ven is bad, but both not playing really hampers the way they want to play. I think the ref played the advantage & immediately thought Grealish was offside - hence blowing & calling the ball back. Everyone I was with called it offside & we had a better angle but Jack timed his run really well. If he’s let him run on & do whatever he would have done whilst being offside, then it would have wasted time for Man City so he was damned either way. Thought he had a great game apart from that call.

Where Pep Guardiola coaches his players to ALWAYS take the safest option, which inevitably means recycling the ball 300 times while waiting for the perfect opportunity, Angeball is the complete opposite. It encourages players to ALWAYS take risks, to seek openings and weaknesses and exploit them. Guardiola's need for total control is risk-averse soulless collectivism, and that's how he turned the previously exciting Jack Grealish into a broken facsimile of his former self, someone who only managed to break his goal-scoring drought of about 35 games with a tap-in he had zero creative input in. And if Pep's style is soulless collectivism, then Angeball must be the diametric opposite - a free-market, capitalistic approach to creative expression, with a plan. It's hair-raising at times, but, my God, what a rush!

The level of ignorance is staggering. Pep won 3 straight EPL titles. His method is incredible and few can only dream of emulating it. Your "my God, what a rush!" style of play will NEVER win an EPL title. It takes discipline and consistency to win a championship. Ainge ball is pure hype. The whole comeback wouldn't even be discussion if Haaland made his open goals in the first half.
@eshaanbhat3732
@eshaanbhat3732 5 месяцев назад
@@mariahlin5556that's true but while results matter a good style of play will always be more exciting. Man city won the treble but they didn't have a single game of the season contender. Football like all sports is about entertainment. If there is no excitement to watching football people will stop turning up. It is even reflected in city's fanbase when they are in the stadium.They always look dejected when playing smaller teams. Domination aside they are boring to watch
@ainslieberrafella
@ainslieberrafella 5 месяцев назад
@@mariahlin5556 But Haaland missed, didn't he? And that's that. Ange Postecoglou won the Manager of the Month Award for August, September AND October. He is the first manager EVER to win the award in his first 2 months in charge of a club in the EPL - AND his first three! Maddison was the Player of the month in August. Son was in September! They're playing VERY ENTERTAINING FOOTBALL! But, sure, if you're the type who thinks winning is everything and, like Stalin, will throw endless cannon fodder to win at any cost then declare himself the best general, then you understand how Pep Guardiola approaches football. ALL his titles were won with unlimited resources. There's also a very good argument that his legacy - tiki taka - is one of the worst (and most boring) things to happen to football, but maybe that's an argument for another day. I'll take Angeball over it any day of the week.

Well made video mate. I’d like to add that during that poor decision by the referee, if we had Van Der Van who is pivotal to Ange’s defensive system, they wouldn’t have been through on goal anyways. This is what makes Tottenham such an incredible team. When he is on the pitch all the high risk play can be quickly shut down by VDV’s recovery pace and Romeros ability to read the play quickly. I bet you during that Chelsea game if we had 9 men again and one of them was Van Der Ven, a few of those crosses into the box for goals wouldn’t have been able to happen.

You have summed up so many points I have been trying to make with all this frustrating criticism but one thing not really mentioned by anyone on top of all of this analysis is the fact he's not trying to win the league this season - he's building a team to win. The whole approach is based on getting better at what they do - they can't do that if they change every time they have an injury, or if they go a man down etc and they certainly won't develop their game as fast if they keep doing that. He's developing them now, and while that is happening and he is assessing who can handle it and who can't, they'll keep bringing in more players that can - which they clearly need. He can't wait 4 transfer windows before *starting* the development just because they don't have the players. This is something I don't hear anyone talking about. They think because Spurs actually started way better than anyone expected that this is already the finished article - it's not even close. Too many small minded pundits around that never had the vision to know how to manager even a half decent football team let alone one that can actually strive to be the best. They want Spurs to just be a mediocre team, and if Neville or Keane were managing them they'd have a ceiling as mediocre at best, likely a complete failure. Great you mention the 9 men and city as weird for anyone to complain about. City, away, with Royal and Davies at CB, and the likes of Neville want them to go there and wait to lose. If they did that and lost 3-0, Neville would have said it was a brave effort. Well, they got a draw, excited the fans, the neutrals. People have to realise you don't get the best parts of spurs without the worst parts - you can't keep your cake and eat it - but the worst parts will all improve (players back fit, new players in, squad cohesion and understanding of what is being asked of them improving), which will also improve the best parts of them.

Great video man. Top analysis. Around the 35 minute mark, I said to my mate “He has to bring Hojbjerg on at HT. Take Gill off”. Not insight or amazing but pretty obvious common sense imo. Hojbjerg brought that strength & power that City were using to get on top into the Spurs side. And he brought that absolute stability & protection to the defensive side of Spurs’ game. Without that stability I think City would’ve carried on over powering Spurs & gone onto to win the game but with it Spurs over powered City & were the better side in that 2nd half. Not too bad with 10 players missing, if I don’t say so myself. Cheers man, keep up the great work.

Spot on about Bissouma and Angeball, every now and again we are going to concede a soft goal, however, if he'd pulled that off, he's busting into space with Sonny, Johnson and Kulu ahead of him and he knows his team will be going forward with him and they can maybe create a scoring opportunity while City are still trying to catch up. It's what Angeball is all about, it's exciting, entertaining, fun to watch again after the timid, turgid fare served up under Jose, Antonio and Nuno. The rollercoaster ride is going to be exhilarating, lets see where it takes us, we need two to four transfer windows to get up to full speed.

Just because grealish has a chance doesn’t mean he scores. Vicario has been on of the best keepers in the league and has shown he can defend from the top of the box. It is entirely possible that grealish doesn’t score instead city should be mad at the sitters that halland missed

That was amazing analysis. Please turn on Super Thanks. I just subscribed and want to send a thanks. Your analysis literally saves me so much time! I just started watching EPL this season, and I’ve been learning mostly through people’s reactions on social media and then YT videos when they come out. It’s honestly a huge time sink. I’d rather support someone who does the actual work of analysis (and demoing formations and putting together screenshots and scripting it all and so on). Love the work!

People forgot Ange has not even been at Tottenham for long. I think next season or two if they still have him there they can seriously challenge for titles.

Spot on, we don't hear this said enough. Ange ball is not about formations or tactics it's about bravery and mentality. Spurs have literally gone from one end of the footballing philosophy spectrum to the other in a matter of months.

This football content is excellent. I think this is a step up from the already decent tifo football.

10:21 like I've said before. Ange is a brilliant, if not an elite coach. He isn't a tactician, he just knows what's needed and when. A tactician would have setup a tactic to neutralise city. Ange didn't care, he just had a game plan and motivated their players enough to see it with a few tweaks. No fancy variations etc. I've always said, Spurs hit the lottery getting him
