In this video, I apply holly stringing on the finished drawer front. Using a simple scratch stock and some detail chisels, a groove is made and the 1/8-in. stringing is hot glued into place. From there, traditional cock-beading is applied around the front perimeter of the drawer front. For more details on this and other hand crafted projects- check out my book The Unplugged Woodshop - Hand Crafted Projects for the Home and Workshop and my website:

For myself, I use a combination of both and an power tools. I guess you could say I'm a hybrid or "cross overs" woodworker. I enjoy the speed and guided accuracy that many power tools provide, and the refined control and broader range of work offered by many hand tools. I have never been able to cut a strieght line by hand, so most of my saws are powered. Same for virtually all my drilling. That said, I still use hand planes and chissels for their wonderful versatility, control, and for many small job speed (virtually no set up time and about equal maintenance time).

I thought it a very nice touch by taking the time to cut out the drawer front to receive the beading and not attaching it to the cabinet box. You have a lot of guts to cut your drawer after it is pretty much done. Nice work!

Another great video Tom. I notice you exclusively use hide glue on your projects. I think I will give it a try on my next project. I have read quite a bit about the pluses of hide glue. Anything that is detrimental in it's use?
@theUnpluggedWoodshop
@theUnpluggedWoodshop 10 лет назад
Thanks for the comments and question. If you're planning on using Liquid Hide Glue, keep an eye on the expiry date- you'll also need to warm it up before using it. If you decide to go with hot hide glue, it takes a bit of getting used to- make sure you 'cook' it everyday so it doesn't go moldy on you- Stephen Shepherd's book, 'Hide Glue' is a good resource for lots of hide glue info- all the best!

Beautyful ... as always. I have a question regarding your shoulder plane sharpening method. I have the same Veritas large one but find difficult to sharpen the blade square. Free hand out of question. I have the Veritas MK II with narrow blade attachment, Lie -Nielsen honing guide with long jaws. None of them works. My husband always tells me not to worry, right angle is an abstract mathematical concept, virtually does not exist 😉. Thanks a lot.

Hi Tom, the collar and the inlet works of the drawer to see really great. As you could see that it was a very delicate work. Where should also take this time to make it look very sensible. Thumbs up for your work, video and music! :-D

Tom, so you never did any apprenticing under a master at all? Amazing! I am a hands on learner. Very hard for me to take something from text and put it to work. I guess that makes me a kinesthetic type. I enjoy your videos and level of craftsmanship!

Hey Tom Love your videos. Seeing the work you do is just incredible. I do have a question tho, why do you use a shoulder plane after making the rabbit with the rabbit plane? Thanks for making these videos really a joy and inspiration
@theUnpluggedWoodshop
@theUnpluggedWoodshop 7 лет назад
Thanks for the question and comments. I prefer to sneak up to my knife lines with the shoulder plane simply because I find the sight lines on the Rabbet Plane a little hard to see. I seem to have a little more control with the shoulder plane. all the best~

Tom can i ask a big favour! Sometimes you cannot read the subtitles due to the backgroung and the lighting conditions. Could you please use black text as this will stand out a bit better. Thankyou.
@theUnpluggedWoodshop
@theUnpluggedWoodshop 10 лет назад
David, thanks for the suggestion. Black titles sometimes get lost in the back ground as well, this video seems to be worse than most for the text getting lost. What can I say, I'm a wood worker not a video editor! LOL- ; )

I'm assuming the scratch stock used is from an old tool blade? What kind of steel if you don't mind me asking ?
@theUnpluggedWoodshop
@theUnpluggedWoodshop 8 лет назад
it was actually made from an old card scraper- spring steel that about 0.016" thick and hardened to Rc48-52. hope that helps!

Tom Fidgen It does! I never thought of that as an option. Oh! And I want to thank you on your advice on planing joining surfaces on knotted wood (I asked a while back)...worked like a charm...I've never had such a tight contact for a glue up. The joining surfaces were quite wide, but no discernible gap at all! I did as you said...and I feel quite grateful! Thanks.

Do use nails to fasten the cock beading to the end grain of the drawer front or do you just rely on the glue ?

The problem is these handtools are very expensive. But only with good quality handtools is handworking a joy.
@tilmanahr
@tilmanahr 10 лет назад
Sure. But good quality doesn't necessarily mean really expensive. I picked up most of the hand tools I own (not many by any means) at flea markets for hardly any money at all. Knowing how to get rid of rust and sharpen blades is all it takes to make that approach work. The set of Chisels I use was actually bought new. From Amazon. For under 1€ a piece. I bought them assuming I'd have to re-grind and polish the cutting edges and did I ever. But after two hours of leisurly work I had a set of six very workable chisels for the price of a pack of cigarettes. They're probably not going to hold that perfect, crisp edge for as long as a nice set of Kirschen chisels, but they were essentially free. I can still replace them with *nice* chisels one by one, but meanwhile, I can work with them. And let's be honest: Crappy, cheap power tools are a pain in the backside to work with as well, maybe even more. Plus you can't usually “refurbish“ messed up good quality ones you picked up cheaply. I guess you know the saying that blaming the tools is the mark of a bad craftsman. Sure: high quality, expensive tools are nice to have, but IMHO the truly great thing about hand tools is that they're simple enough that you can often make even really crappy ones work well if you know what you're doing with a whetstone and a file…

Tilman Ahr I ment the planes and the saws. If iam able to get those on a flewmarket, hurray, but i dont believe.
@tilmanahr
@tilmanahr 10 лет назад
micheloderso Most likely not those same ones, but I bought old, high-quality wooden planes at flea markets and restored them before. Once you know how to handle them, they are a joy to work with.
@micheloderso
@micheloderso 10 лет назад
Tilman Ahr Yes, i did it too. And i bought some planes from silverline. They are less expensive and with a little work on it and i can use them daily. And, i fight my struggles with the right angle on flat boards...;-) Und wenn ich dann Mr. Fidgen zuschaue bin ich manchmal ein bißchen frustriert. Aber ich gebe nicht auf! ;-)
