Wow! Gerber is coming back in the game with what appears to be a winner of a folding knife... the Scout! I just got this knife a few days ago, but I'm looking forward to putting it through the paces of everyday life. This is an initial video on it, as this just came out. Look on Gerber's website if you want to purchase it.
The shirt I'm wearing is from a local company called Gungnir Defense Solutions that offers training and classes for civilian, First Responder and LE/Mil on multiple different tactical and emergency medical skills. I have been through some of their sessions and they do an amazing job. Check Gungnir Defense Solutions out if you or your agency are looking for training options!

Free music for intro and outro... but I'll still give them a shout out: Electro Summer Positive Party by Alex Kizenkov. This is available on Pixabay.com.
Support your local First Responders! They do a lot for the community.
Note: I am not endorsed by any of these companies, and I have not been given these products to review. Everything in my videos are my personal opinion, and I am not liable for any purchase you make (or don't) based on my reviews! Have fun!

as long as they use 440A and 7Cr they do damage to themselves. 440C or D2 cost a few USD more, but it would make a difference. a huge one.
@lynnjr457
@lynnjr457 2 месяца назад
Exactly. They ruined their name so many years ago and they still need to drag themselves out of the cheap materials for twice the price mindset. I would argue that D2 or 12C28N should have gone into this knife for it's price point. There are quite a few knives with these steels coming in much cheaper.

do you think they make replacement blades?

Seems like a good knife, as long as the heat treatment is done well 440a should be just fine.

I got a 440c Birddog fixed blade and I am very impressed. 440-class with a good heat treat is hard to beat for any scenario a knife would ever see.

@@Errcyco true. but 440A has only half as much carbon.

I think Gerber have been making some good moves. I agree with the comment about 440A and 7Cr. At this point (2023), there's no reason to be using these steels. In fact, one of Gerber's other recent knives, The Mansfield, uses D2. With that complaint now said, I like the design of this knife.

Thanks for the input! I see they’re available now elsewhere for around 40, so that MSRP is only on their website. I also love the design of this knife, and after reading others comments, I emailed Gerber asking about their steel choice. No word back yet… and it’s been about a week.
@lynnjr457
@lynnjr457 2 месяца назад
@@redbeard_reviews1 You can buy D2 and even 12C28N in the $40 price range. This was a huge miss for them and a continuance of the greedy behavior that destroyed their name years ago. I used to only buy Gerber back in the 1990s/2000s and then they sold themselves out.

I didn't think I'd like it, didn't really want to like it for some reason but it's grown on me. It's in my edc rotation now, you get used to the weird feeling button on the pivot lock and the 440A blade holds up better than any 440A or C blade I've ever had. It's almost on point with D2, definitely better than 8CR on edge retention. Idk if it's just because of the coating or if that even affects the edge but ive only had to sharpen ot once in about 3 months

I’ve got a few Ganzo Firebird knives in 440 steel and crossbar locks for a lot less than $60. But if this Gerber Scout ever drops in price to about $35, I’ll buy one or two…!

I’ve heard a couple others mention Ganzo knives now! I’ll have to take a peek at them too. If I’ve been “had” on the price for this Gerber, well at least I now know. I need to go back and find out if it’s made in America like the Strongarm.

I'm really rooting for Gerber but from bad quality issues to being wildly overpriced... They're still not out of the doghouse, for me. $60 for chinese-made 440a is insane, Considering you can get a genzo made of 440c for $30 or less with an axis lock. After the asada and the armbar drive, I am convinced that they have knife designers that have never used a knife or multitool. I really hope that they get their act together because not only does the company have a lot of potential, but it has a long storied history. Excellent review, I really got an idea of what the knife is all about... thanks. -Brian

@redbeard_reviews1 well put. I'm just looking forward to the day when it makes sense to buy a u.s. made knife again. China is out doing the u.s. in all facets including quality. It's apparent when I compare my budget Kizer to my Emerson mini sheepdog. Same steel, Kizer has better H/T. Better hardware / bearings (Emerson still uses steel bearings)... And the longevity speaks for itself. The KIZER hasn't changed in over 2 years with constant fidgeting, whereas the Emerson lock moved all the way over and now I have vertical bladeplay...in under 3 weeks. Kizer-$69 Emerson-$240 + the cost of sending it back for repair. Let's hope they don't hassle me

Gerber is all about how cheap can we make our knives. That or they have nicer stuff no one wants cause their money is better spent on another brand. Weird. My last four Gerbers were all a letdown. Been about two years since I bought one. I’m really liking Civivi at the moment. Kizer too.

440A for $60? Get a Ganzo for maybe half that with the crossbar lock and either 440C or even D2. And I guarantee that Gerber Scout is made in the same country.

When I was in the Marines (88-96) Gerber was the SHIT. I carried my Gator EVERYWHERE. I have had multiple Mark I's II's and the like. But as I have become more refined in my collecting and hard use, I have become less and less enamored of Gerber products, they have become mostly shiite IMO! That being said, I LOVE this design, I love a couple of their other designs, but my God! can they not get rid of that stupid steel they use? its GARBAGE!! I paid a Philipino kid 5 bucks to make a knife from a truck leaf spring which held an edge longer than Gerbers, 440a through c kind of sucks. 7cr sucks.upgrade to at least D2 and I would pay 75 for this design.
@redbeard_reviews1

I feel you on their design. Blade steel is not my most informed area, so I bought this one. But for the last 20 years I haven’t really felt the need to buy Gerber… until that Strongarm came out.

Do you like 440 ?
@redbeard_reviews1
@redbeard_reviews1 Год назад
I am not knowledgeable enough on steel types to have chosen the knife based off that when I bought it. However after reading some comments and doing research, 440 has hood corrosion resistance and is easily sharpened. As long as it’s heat treated properly it will do fine. So I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. (And I’ll keep beating on it!)

Gerber has lost the knife communities trust with sub par products and quality. Gerber is what you buy when you're new to EDC and you don't know any better. Too many other knife companies making kick ass knives at the same price point or cheaper with better materials and quality.
