Germany's hard right party the ADF have made astonishing gains in two regions of the country - the first time the hard right has seen substantial electoral gains since the Nazi era. What is propelling the rise? And what do the governing coalition parties do to combat them.
Later, we sit down with Nadhim Zahawi - former chancellor, and former child refugee to talk about his party's rhetoric on immigration. And why he owed the treasury 5 million pounds of unpaid tax.

25:12 Emily questions: "Now you're saying you'd like to have a grown-up conversation, but I never remember you raising your voice on this issue when you were in government." But what she describes, and is apparently confused by, seems entirely consistent to me. "Raising your voice" on something isn't an act of grown-up conversation! "Raising your voice" is a performative and selfish act carried out for your own ego. Grown-ups worry about ideas and results and don't care about what anyone else thinks of them. Tthey don't have an urge to be the centre of attention, so have no need to proclaim what they think out loud all the time. They just say it in the appropriate places where it is relevant and may have a useful impact. It's one thing if he's changed his views, but if it's simply the case that he _didn't_ previously shout it out loud specifically so that everyone could hear, then that'd be a sign of him engaging in _more_ grown-up conversation, not less!

The most wonderful thing about a democracy is when an opposition party comes into power and realises how difficult governing a country is… it takes time, compromise and watering down ‘non negotiable’ points. The ADF will go through exactly the same thing. Opposition is easy. Being ‘in power’ is 😳🤞🏼

@EdwardLindon
@EdwardLindon 15 дней назад
1. Most of the people who claim to have "issues" don't even live in areas with high immigration. 2. Poll after poll has shown that*most* people don't especially care about immigration but are more interested in the economy, the cost of living and services like the NHS and railways. The people who care most about immigration just happen to be extremely noisy and prone to a spot of arson and looting. 3. The UK has a labour shortage, particularly in healthcare (see above). 4. Rioters set up road blocks, demanded passing motorists identify their race, and only allowed white people past. It really doesn't feel like they *only* care about "immigration", does it?

There is a huge difference between American/British politics and continental Europe politics. The former won WW2, never had to deal with the end results of fascism/communism. As a result the older generations in US/UK hark back to a seemingly better bygone era whereas the young tend to vote to the left/liberal. Older generations in continental Europe actually remember what it was like to live under fascism/communism, the younger generations in continental Europe do not. That is why there is a complete opposite generational voter experience in US/UK vs continental Europe

Looks like you've answered your own questions in the introduction, maybe it's astonishing because the status quo exists in an ideological bubble that is becoming increasingly out of touch with the reality of politics, and this, fuelled by labelling increasingly mainstream views as extreme, it's all relative of course, is propelling the rise. More people are not feeling effectively represented and the implication that this it needs to be 'combat'ed rather than for the status quo to adjust their ideologies and approach to politics in line with more popular views are probably adding additional fuel to the movement, as people increasingly feel they are being coerced rather than listened to, which apparently is supposed to be the whole point of democracy.

Look across Europe and you'll see examples of both far right and what are considered far left parties doing well, because Centrism/Neoliberalism offers no real solution to peoples problems. All it does is line the pockets of big business at the expense of everyone else.
