In July 1944 it became evident it was only a matter of time until Nazi Germany would be defeated. The Allied forces had landed on Normandy during D-Day and the Soviets were slowly penetrating Eastern Prussia. Within Germany, General Henning von Tresckow was asked whether it would be worth it to continue with their secret operation. He answered with a resolute yes: the attack had to be carried out at all costs. The world and future generations should know the German resistance dared to take the decisive step and was willing to sacrifice their own lives for it. Among the conspirators was a colonel, Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg. The man, missing a hand and eye, wholeheartedly agreed. He had already begun with the preparations.

The German resistance against Hitler and the Nazis make for some fascinating stories of personal courage and moral dilemmas. The 20 July Plot is one of the most tension-ridden attempts to assassinate Hitler and launch a coup against the Nazi regime, in order to end the Second World War. *Channels that uploaded a WW2 video today* The Armchair Historian: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3fghJ1c02KQ.html Voices of the past: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WQlP6NifzXw.html History House Productions: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d1w7uYRMzLs.html *Timecodes* 0:56 The Kreisau Circle 3:43 Helmuth James Graf von Moltke 6:02 Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg 7:26 20 July 1944 9:49 The Nazi Purge 12:01 Epilogue *Sources* Clark, C. Seeing a comprehensive perspective on German history between 1910 and 1950 is refreshing... I haven't even been shown "Schindlers Liste" in 2 years, its quite uneavening to be out of school and lectured without university leave prerequisites.

Good timing. There have been some talk about renovating the Wolfschanze bunker recently, and turning it to a museum. The bunker is available to visit even in state it is today and I defenitelly recommend you to do so if you happen to be in northern Poland. I'm from the area and from personal note, my great grandfather was one of the workers who were forced to build the road leading to the bunker itself. I'll have to research if that's true, but the workers were to be killed once they finish their work, and my great grandfather had only survived because some soldier watching the workers warned them.

I hope they leave the Wolfsschanze as it is. Great story, by the way.
@Vitalis94
@Vitalis94 5 лет назад
@@operationww2368 Yeah, there is something about visiting abandoned, partly destroyed bunkers, which are quite plenty in what used to be East Prussia. Having it rebuilt would get it rid of its former charm, IMHO. That said, there are some neglected objects that should be rebuilt instead of left there, as it's the case with Westerplatte.
@HistoryonYouTube
@HistoryonYouTube 5 лет назад
@@Vitalis94 I have not heard anything about the rebuilding of the Wolf's Lair but I presume if anything were to be rebuild it would be the hut where the bomb went off. As for the Westerplatte, the huge mound that was build there was done after the war but that is now part of the landscape and I think it would be wrong to put it back to the way it was after the war. As for the story about the Todt workers being killed, I would dispute that unless evidence comes up to the contrary. Indeed in July 1944 work was going on in reinforcing the bunkers against air attack, Hitler initially suspected the Todt workers of having planted a bomb but was later seen talking to them - something very odd for him as he usually gave normal people a wide berth. As you are from the area, I am sure you know Pozezdrze where Himmler had his bunker. When I went there 12 years ago I thought it was absolutely incredible - walking through the forest then seeing pyramid like structures in front of me.

I think that is a very good overview of the plot and I agree that the film Valkyrie is very good also (albeit with mistakes such as suggesting that Stauffenberg was at the centre from the beginning when in fact he was a rather late recruit and several other things relating to the timescale - although of course the action had to be kept moving. What I found particularly interesting was the way it portrayed the Berghof and the picture window room (admittedly with the window and sitting room in the wrong place!) In my opinion, and that of the Gestapo also (!) , the centre of the conspiracy was von Tresckow and it was his force and determination that led to the whole Valkyrie plot and had he been in Berlin on 20 July 1944 perhaps it would have ended up more positively. I will be posting something on this on my own channel. I was at the Bendler Block now in Stauffenbergerstrasse in Berlin in March but at the speed I put things up I will be lucky to get this posted for the 80th anniversary of the attempted coup!

The German Resistance Memorial Center in Berlin is located next to the courtyard where the conspirators were executed. Very much worth the time to visit.

Sometimes I wonder if all these people would do all of these things if the war had gone differently. They all knew in 1941 (did not take what they wanted) or 1942 (the oil fields) that the war was lost. It seems like they all turned against the regime when they knew that the war was lost. There are some genuine people ofc before who tried to eliminate Hitler (in 1939-1940), but that was just a handfull. I can understand all these people tho, they knew Hitler would not surrender and go on until the bitter end (sadly what happened). They wanted to prevent that and make peace, so for that I feel sad every time I see videos like this. Ps: your video was nice, but you should use much more photos, maps, anecdotes,... We just look at you haha. Great video tho, keep it up!

I think Tresckow is a stand out in that regard. By the summer of 1939, he said "both duty and honor demand from us that we should do our best to bring about the downfall of Hitler and National Socialism to save Germany and Europe from barbarism."

Unfortunately, Operation: Valkyrie was probably doomed from the start. Even if they'd killed Hitler, would the German people just go along with it? I find that unlikely. It might very well have even led to another "stabbed in the back" myth. Hitler was seen as a savior by many within Germany, and killing him may have just turned him into a martyr.

I feel like Stauffenberg gets hyped up so much. He was a brutal warrior and was antisemitic. He was a convinced Nazi and only wanted to kill Hitler because Hitler was losing, not because he saw Hitler as hurting people.
@jfournerat1274
@jfournerat1274 Год назад
Yes most of the July 20th plotters were anti semites and conservative and only tried to kill Hitler due to him losing the war and many of them were deeply implicated in Nazi atrocities such as the Holocaust. However Staffenberg was geinunilly opposed to Hitlers mistreatment of Jewish people due to his Catholic beliefs and was geinully horrified at the mass murder of Jewish people and even said that those crimes should not be allowed to continue so one of his motives to kill Hitler was to negotiate a peace deal with the Allies due to Hitler losing the war but was also partially motivated by opposition to the Holocaust.
