Christer Bergstrom in his two-volume history of Market Garden claims that the sand-filled oil drums weren't for improvised armour for the troops in the trucks, but for them to use in setting up blocking positions once they broke out from the bridge into Arnhem and linked up with other German troops in the city. I haven't seen that claim anywhere else, but I thought it was an interesting possibility.
It's interesting to contrast the variety of different vehicles with the German efficiency in putting together an effective kampfgruppe. I didn't know the Germans with Grabner on the bridge included volunteers. I suppose they thought it a good idea to hang around with a knight's cross winner. Bad move.

Is it at all possible to win in this game, if you are playing the Allied side? The British army was at quite the disadvantage at this battle. Is there a way for XXX Corps to show up and save the day?
