That's incorrect, body IS is also 5 stops until 50mm (100mm equiv.) - which covers the most used focal length in normal situations -, it's just that DUAL IS can keep the 5-stops for a much longer focal length, 140mm with native glass. Sure, DUAL IS should probably be better than just body IS, but still, it's not just 3 stops like stated in the video. I'm not sure where did you get info, I got mine from the Panasonic GH5 private presentation that was leaked during CES. So the only difference is when you need longer tele, then to keep 5 stops you will need DUAL IS' otherwise you should get 5 stops even without any OIS lens. Also, 100Mbps IPB is more compressed than the 400Mbps All-I, so in theory it should be LESS tasking on yourself computer and not the other way around like you said. The bitrate doesn't mean it needs more computer power, ProRes HQ can be about 960Mbps and it's much smoother to edit than the 100Mbps H.264. IPB means more calculations than All-I, so if your computer can handle the 100Mbps file, it should do just as well if not better with the All-I 400Mbps. BTW, 10-bit 422 will not be a factor at all. You don't need a dual handle gimbal to deal with the GH5 + Sigma 18-35mm, Zhiyun Crane handles well up to 1600g - even up to 1800g - according to Zhiyun, plus there is also the Pilotfly H2, which is a one handle gimbal up to 2kg.

@theflyingmario1
@theflyingmario1 7 лет назад
theSUBVERSIVE The Zhiyun Crane definitely goes up to 1800g easily when using there 5D firmware. The motors seem ridiculously stronger when using the 5D firmware. Downside with that firmware though is that it's unstable at payload under 1400g, but you can always switch back between the two in advance on a computer when you know your carrying lighter gear.

Skintones is something done by lumetry, not by the brand. Or Am I wrong?!?!?
@LightWthoutTheStatic
@LightWthoutTheStatic 7 лет назад
Definitely incorrect. Skintones can be improved or accentuated by color grading processes (using something like lumetri, color finale, or Resolve), but if the information isn't there to begin with when captured in the first place, the color science developed by the brand and technical capabilities of the camera, then you can't do much at all with color grading. It's important with skintones to really get them right in camera and leave stylizing to post production. Skintones is much more a function of the brand and its color science.
@nej8853
@nej8853 7 лет назад
May I ask if the camera you are using in this video can produce video that can be color-corrected in post? Not to any extremes, of course. But to some extent? Thank you for your video and insight. You just saved me about 3.000$. :)

I think the problem with all of this speculative thinking based on nothing but "specs' is that, for me, at least, specs don't tell the entire story. Two years ago I bought a Canon c-100mk2. Even brand new, according to the specs, it was already obsolete. AVCHD codec? Consumer crap. 24mbps (for 24p) - ya gotta be kidding. 8 bit 4:2:0. Garbage. Why in the world, knowing what I did, would I buy it - and at $5500? Well, there were a couple of compelling reasons. One was the build quality and ergonomics. But that wouldn't matter by itself. The main reason was the image quality. I mean, geez, it's just gorgeous. And with the same sensor as the 300 and 500, I guess it damn well should be. But what to do about the codec and color space and on and on? Well - I bought an inexpensive ninja star - so suddenly I'm shooting in ProRes 422 (still 8 bit). But a big improvement for very little outlay and it pretty much turned my camera into a C300 for much less money. But here's the thing, even without the Ninja - if I light properly and expose properly - if I do my job as a camera operator/cinematographer up front - then I won't be one of those who complains about how the image breaks up in post because of the crappy codec and color space, etc. I've used this camera professionally on countless shoots. It's great for run and gun as well as narrative shorts where the environment is more controlled. It does everything I've needed it to do -is a pleasure to use - and delivers beautiful results. If I dismissed it because of its specs, without having actually tested it, I would have been the poorer for it. I think what makes us good at what we do is understanding the characteristics - or you could call it the limitations - of the camera - and learn how to get the best from it. Because there will always be the next great thing just around the corner. I have an a6300 - so believe me, I know that feeling. So, you could pre-order the GH5. Or, you could wait a few months for the alleged a7Smk3. In the meantime, I'm just going to keep attempting to get better with what I have. I wonder if Ansel Adams complained about dragging around that camera - low points for portability, no auto focus... and hey, thanks for the video. I think it's nothing short of amazing that I can sit here and watch a half hour of a guy just talking about a product that doesn't yet have in his hand. The side benefit of your videos is that you may actually be lengthening our attention spans. And on youtube! Talk about counter-intuitive!

Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions - I have made a living photographing with 2 Nikon D750 cameras that are great for still images but very difficult for video that I now get asked to shoot more and more. I now realise I have to buy a relatively small video centric camera as obviously Nikon is never going to do that. The only camera I can think of buying to suit my needs is the Sony A6500 because I shoot a lot of events in low light in a run and gun situation. I know that the A7sIII will have the same AF and that is really all I want on my next camera so I'm waiting patiently.

Sony still has the FS5 to protect, it's not very Sony of them, to put 10-bit 422 and 4K60p in the A7S before the FS5 II, but then, what advantages would the FS7 have over the FS5? Sony doesn't even offer HDMI out 10-bit for their A7, I'm also not sure how would Sony put decent 4K60p with the rolling shutter of their larger sensors. Have you seem the rolling shutters test of the GH5 and E-M1? It's quite impressive, smaller sensor does have its drawbacks but it also has advantages, like less rolling shutter and better body IS. Sony took quite a while before being able to get 4K in their cameras after the GH4, so I'm not so sure if Sony will respond right away. I'm still wondering about the rumored A9.

C100MKII is an awesome camera, What helps the image is that is has a 4K sensor and even though its recording at 1080p i think its a better 1080P then other 1080P cameras.. I had chance to use one helping out a friend on a shoot, I would totally but one, but i think my next camera must have at least 4K option, its a must at this point in time just for future proofing.. Your also right, i also watched the full 30 minute video, for some reason.. Nice Job, VIDJACK - Great Points you made there.

Okay, now I'm into this. Your first GH5 video raised an eyebrow. By the end of this one, I was engrossed. Wait... how the hell did you get me watch a 30 minute RU-vid video??? I didn't think that was possible. Anyway, I'm enjoying the series enough to subscribe. BTW: I'm here cause I made the decision to preorder the GH5 upgrading from the GH4. I wanted improved ISO noise, better results with the VLog-L codec... but IBIS and autofocus capabilities got my money. I currently use a Ronin-M, GH4, with either the Tokina 11-16 or the HEAVY Sigma 18-35 (I know, I know) with mixed results. Take #5, Take #6... until we get it in focus. IBIS and autofocus should greatly impact the way I shoot. If the GH5 checks out, I might be able to get away with a smaller LIGHTER handheld stabilizer and sell the Ronin-M and replacing it with a Panasonic 4/3 dual IS glass you mentioned. Just wanted to chime in and tell you how much YOU have me thinking about the GH5, also. Thanks. Looking forward to more videos.

Veydra 12mm, 16mm, 19mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm is the ideal lens for the cine side. In all honesty unless you're willing to give up true, manual, geared focusing, you're not going to really get in lens IS. Get a quality EVF for focusing accuracy. AF while improving still looks mechanical to me. I'm getting Panasonic lenses for weather sealing not for IS. If the priority is image quality Veydra is the target, imo.

Getting the gear you want is really though if you don't have the budget. For example: I really want the Sony a6500. Technically I can afford that camera (That's $1400). But the reallity is much more different (and difficult). Because what happens after I buy the camera? Well, I need lenses. I can't afford the expensive Sony autofocus lenses so I go to the next best thing. Fast Samyang primes. The 12mm f/2 CS ($350) and 50mm f/1.2 CS ($440) but I also need a fast autofocus standard lens. I chose the Sony FE 28mm f/2 ($420). That's $2600. What about audio? I need a mic. Rode VideoMic Pro ($220). What about lighting? I Probably need 200-500$ for some lighting equipment. Let's say I got all that. And I shot my footage. I then import it. Holly crap what's happening? My computer can't even handle 4K editing. So I'll also need a new PC for editing (about $1000). Add it all up and the price skyrockets to $4400. But wait I found myself in a situations that I'll need a telephoto lens do shoot something specific. Oh, man... So after all that I said well screw it. Let's put aside that camera and get something that I can afford that will also leave me some money for traveling and other stuff. After much... much... searching I found the incredible Panasonic FZ300. That cost $500 and does absolutely everything that I need. It's an incredible little camera actually. It's not the best in low light of course but I could work around it. Or buy additional lights that I can now afford. So when you're buying a new ILC (interchangeable lens camera). You're not just buying a new camera, but you're buying into an ecosystem of lots of different components. So, I would say, you need to choose carefully what you're getting into. Until you can afford the gear that you want. But not necessarily need.

If you're all about clinical sharpness, best in class image stabilization and such, Olympus PRO lenses with the E-M1 Mark II seems the more obvious way to go? That said, of course you can't deny the GH5's video capabilities in a similar body but sports that fullsize HDMI port, supports UHS-II for both slots and offers the much improved EVF. Regarding lenses with a mount native to the system. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN is a great affordable lens, but yeah it's outside of the Panasonic scope. With the 30mm f/2.8 Macro and 42.5mm f/1.7 they've introduced the first affordable non-Leica primes with OIS. And they really keep up. If you want to go Leica... the early models I felt had too much of a Lumix vibe. The newer ones look stellar and gotta love the addition of an aperture ring on the primes. The most affordable one is the 15mm f/1.7 and it sure is quite the value! Because it and the 12mm f/1.4 are fairly wide, they've opted to leave out OIS however. The 42.5mm f/1.2 has it, but together with the 12mm, they're well north of a 1000 bucks. In the end, there never is the ultimate camera or the ultimate lens that suits everyone. But you could get pretty close to perfection for your personal needs... but you probably have to cross a couple of things of your list, be it price... manufacturer, features such as image stabilization... Super excited myself for the GH5. It and the E-M1 Mark II really stepped it up. Panasonic and Olympus have made some incredible bodies there with awesome features. And... it's reliable with hardly any quirks or downsides. I was so excited when Sony announced the A6300, looked great on paper. And I could live without a frontfacing touchscreen, but I just can't have reliability and aesthetics adversely affected. Overheat protection kicking in. That nauseating rolling shutter. Colors that require quite a bit of touch-up in post if you leave things on default settings (that also cause color channel clipping). There's hardly any lenses native to the sensor size. They refuse to evolve the A6x00 into a more robust camera because 'people want small cameras' so they say. Well... what is the use of a compact system, if you'll be using FF E-mount lenses on it? Do you just regard it as an entry camera for people who can't afford a FF camera yet? Apart from the crazy expensive Sony E PZ 18-110mm (more likely to be paired with e.g. a FS5) there hasn't been any APS-C E-mount lenses released by Sony for like 3 years. I don't know. The A6500 didn't really step up the game. The touchscreen implementation is pretty marginal and you can now raise the overheat protection threshold, but doing so it gets uncomfortably hot, so you need to mount it on a tripod. I just can't be on board with stuff like that. Listen, I don't need a DSLR. I get it, they're robust, you can throw 'em around, dip 'em in ice, set 'em on fire. They have nice and accurate autofocus systems, you can be a bokehwhore and go crazy for that fullframe shallow depth of field look. Sure, that's all true. But... 1. I'd rather have a smaller camera (see: Sony A7-range) 2. I really don't appreciate optical viewfinders and mirrors, I have the D5300 and using it in liveview is a pain for taking stills, it's like a pinball machine, it clacks the mirror around like three times when taking a shot, it's slow and irritating, also I just prefer liveview because what you see is what you get and you have all the exposure and focus overlays and aids ... also 3. FF 35mm sensor means glass that covers it! That means you're runnning around with big chunks of glass and probably expensive ones at that. Nah. No need for fullframe. If I go with APS-C mirrorless, I still have the option to use a focal reducer of some sorts and get towards fullframe quite easily. Yet, I would have the option as well to use native lenses that are much more compact (well, in case of Sony, perhaps not as much). Really think Samsung created a stunning camera with the NX1, too bad it's not really going anywhere from here. I won't even bother to mention EOS-M, because they still haven't figured out what a mirrorless system is all about. It's just the same old shizzle in a different jacket. That's just what they do. Currently I can only get excited about the APS-C Mirrorless camera that is the Fujifilm X-T2. Just a great reliable camera and such a nice own system lens line-up. They just don't use lens stabilization as much as other systems and they don't believe in sensor stabilization. The mount itself also sees less support for it than let's say E-mount or MFT. The screen doesn't face forwards and is not touchsensitive. Overall, it's close, but no cigar. Considering everything, for me, Micro Four Thirds has the best system here. Great bodies, great choice of bodies, tremendous value, a plethora of lenses to choose from. Compact! What's not to love? Well... the smaller sensor does mean less quantity hence quality of light, so compared to APS-C or FF you do notice it's quite a bit worse at higher ISO sensitivities... also dynamic range, color accuracy etc just falls a little short. Here is where it comes down to... what are the needs, what are the wants and what can you make work? Well, that's different for everybody, but I can take a hit in sensor performance and stay within the limitations of the system to make it work nontheless and then get tremendous value and reliability. Not to mention compactness when out and about. Until someone (Nikon?) comes up with an APS-C mirrorless camera that's a winner, I'm staying in the MFT corner.

You are a phenomenal presenter, well done. I could listen all day. I sold my GH4's and have a GH5 on pre order. I have A7S2, A6300 and A6500 with all the main lenses for each system, but held on to all my Olympus, Voightlander and Panasonic glass for MFT because I just can't let go. The GH4 was an awesome camera, and was a better shooting experience than any of my Sony's (though I am enjoying the A6500). I look forward to the GH5. Interesting points and I am glad I found your channel for the way you present your videos and thoughts! I have been wanting a GH5 and had similar questions. I currently own and use a GH4 and use it to make wildlife videos, but I want to take making videos much more seriously and have spent time learning techniques and tips that will allow me to do this, and when I get the GH5, I want to start making high quality videos with it. I currently have 4 lenses I use with my GH4. A Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8, Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 II, Panasonic 30mm f/2.8 Macro and the Panasonic 100-300mm. After using them for over a year and understanding how to make videos, I now want the same as you when it comes to lenses. Low chromatic aberrations, low distortions, high sharpness and fast auto focus. Image stabilisation is a plus too, but if the GH5 could give good enough body stabilisation, I'd make an exception or two. Like you, I also prefer fast auto focus, but Panasonic mirrorless cameras are not known for their fast focusing in video as they use contrast AF for focusing, which isn't as good as Sony's Phase Detect or Canons Dual Pixel AF system. Panasonic are claiming the auto focus of the GH5 will blow some people away on how good it is, but given its still contrast based, I will reserve judgement for now, still should be somewhat better than the GH4 auto focus for video. From using the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 lens, I did find it sharp, but it suffers from chromatic aberrations which means I don't use it as often as I'd like since its currently the widest angle lens I own. I am now contemplating getting the GH5 with the Leica 12-60mm to use instead if it is sharp and has low aberrations, if I can afford it. The Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 I find sharp from corner to corner and has low chromatic aberrations, but its auto focus is slower than the 12-35mm and its not as wide as I'd like. There is no stabilisation but for such a small lens, I have not found this to be an issue as I have rarely had issues with shake, even shooting in windy locations where shaking can be a real issue so with the IBIS of the GH5, even though I wouldn't get dual IS, should be good enough. My current Panasonic 30mm macro is sharp and focuses well and doesn't seem to have much chromatic aberrations, but its very short and want a new one as I really want to make a lot of wild plant and insect videos with the GH5 and this lens is too short for most of that, so I was thinking of maybe getting the Olympus 60mm macro as it has twice as long focal length and produces sharp images, but it has no stabilisation but with the IBIS on the GH5, that should hopefully be enough to get a stable image with it as I always plan to use it with a tripod. Lastly the Panasonic 100-300mm isn't a lens I like, but because at the time it was the longest native zoom lens with stabilisation that I could afford, I went for it. Its not very sharp, slow auto focus and suffers noticeable chromatic aberrations, which like you, really bug me. I really want a better lens for wildlife in the future. I did think about the Leica 100-400mm but it costs quite a lot and has a dark f/6.3 aperture at 400mm which I think might be past the sharpest narrow aperture of the GH5 before diffraction kicks in. I hope the new 100-300mm II lens is better in sharpness and chromatic aberrations, but without the crop in 4K like the GH4 has, I find the 100-300mm might be a bit too short for getting videos of some wildlife, like birds.

Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions At the moment I still would like the GH5, and since I mostly want to do macro videos over the summer, having a better long telephoto lens than the 100-300mm isn't really a big deal for me, but later in the year if I can afford it, I may just get an adaptor and a good Canon EF telephoto lens that is long enough to meet my needs or if I have the money, the Leica 100-400mm which would have the reach even if the aperture is a little dark at the long end.

hugh-thank you for sharing ALL of your thoughts on the topic ;-) i had a hunch that the a6300 was not this vid's recording tool since the framing was just a wee bit different than usual and the shot was just a wee bit tighter than usual. to my web-compressed eyes, you looked sharp, the background was nicely soft and the spiel was most appreciated. my only question: did you shoot the sigma wide open at f1.4 or were you at f2 or even f2.8? again, thanks for sharing and BIG thumbs up. be well.
@3BMEP

It was either wide open of f/2 -- definitely not higher. Which FCPX would show that data. Great question, though. What I CAN tell you is that the sharpness is great wide open.

I feel the GH5 oddly enough can be used as a specialty camera and does not need to replace your whole Sony lineup. We are at a stage that is best to use each camera at its strengths. In somethings, nothing can touch Sony, in others Canon, and in others Panasonic. My two cents.

regarding DXOmark nocticron testing. I own the lumix noc 42.5mm f1.2 and i also own the Sigma 50mm f1.4 art lens. And i have done a great deal of testing on both, and they are VERY similar in both sharpness and OOFA..... yet DXOmark put the sharpness of the nocticron way lower (regardless on what camera you put it on) than the sigma... i would put them both on exactly the same shelf in terms of sharpness, contrast and quality.

These videos are awesome! You're a very eloquent speaker compared to a lot of other RU-vidrs. I'm definitely on the same page as far as not being terribly impressed by many micro 4/3 lenses. Not a fan of fly-by-wire and all of the decent mechanical focus lenses seem a bit too pricy when considering what their super 35 equivalents are. In my experience, EF lenses are still the best value for the money so I've mostly just used a speed booster to get sort of the best of both worlds (Panasonic camera, Canon lenses). It also helps negate the drawbacks typically associated with the sensor size. Shallow depth of field and low-light are more easily attainable. However, I shoot almost exclusively video. So the only time I care to use autofocus is for gimbals or any rare situations where I'm not able to control focus. If I were a hybrid shooter like you, the choice would be a bit more tricky as autofocus tends to be more essential with photography. But for video, there's no contest in my mind between the GH4/GH5 and anything offered by Canon or Sony at a similar price.

literally was saying the same thing in my head... 'what the heck is this?' lol when I saw the second painting. Go with the 'pro' line Olympus lenses, the f/2.8 and higher Panasonic lenses, and the manual focusing mitakon lenses. In body isn't an end all be all, so I totally get using Panny lenses would help you IS/IBS wise [Panny calls theirs 'In Body Stabilizer]. Now as far as not making compromises on focus... that's something I've always had to do with Panasonic even owning lenses like their Leica 15 + 25mm lenses. And those lenses look 'really' digital in video. Owning again both Sony and Panasonic equipment, if you want native lenses then just get a few of the 'pro' lenses and look at some Olympus lenses. Sell some older Sony stuff you don't use, and get that Panny 12-35 f/2.8 II for the Dual IS. Otherwise I would n't look at just the price. You really should look at workflow, usability, accessories, and the overall other abilities in the Panasonic ecosystem vs Sony. Because honestly I feel if you aren't going to take advantage of all the 'obscure' high selling points you may not use daily, then I would argue getting the GH5 and buying into the Panny line is a good idea. I'd honestly stick with Sony, rent a GH5, and see if it's anything you'll be interested in. The ONLY reasons I am all for it over my GH4, is because I can get 10bit in body, don't have to lug around an external monitor/recorder, have an A/B cam that can ALSO do 10bit 4:2:2 and, the ability to adapt glass from diff manufacturers including anamorphic lenses. Everything else for me is 'icing on the cake' especially some of the photo stuff. But honestly, you might be better sticking with Sony for now Hugh... and renting the GH5 when it comes out... BTW, here is the ONLY way to remove CA in video that I found looks great and works…library.creativecow.net/articles/larsen_carl/removing_chromatic_aberration/video-tutorial

The one thing that keeps me from switching to a Panasonic body is that you have to use Panasonic lenses to get the most out of them. Yes, you can use Olympus lenses (which I have), but then you don't get DFD autofocus. My OM-D E-M1 might not have the video chops of the GH5, but it has phase detect autofocus, which aids AF tracking with my Oly 40-150mm f2.8 PRO and my Oly 75-300mm II. I can put Panasonic lenses on my Oly body and still use the phase detect AF points, but not vice versa. I'm a photographer first, particularly for wildlife, and I'm just starting to dabble in video. My OM-D E-M1 is good enough for my modest video needs at 1080p / 30, and the OM-D E-M1 Mark II would be even better.

Hey Hugh, great video as always. But there is one bit that I found somewhat confusing. At 19:48 you sum up that having just two lenses at (full-frame) focal lengths 85mm and 150mm would work for you. I find that odd, as shooting indoors in any sort of small space makes even an 85mm a challenge to shoot. Did I miss something? Care to elaborate? Thanks!

I'm loving this process and your journey :) I'm a long-time Canon user, but last year picked up a G7 as I wanted a very light body / lens combo capable of narrow DOF. Great video, can leave you more confused than before possibly. Yes, the 400Mbit 4K will leave iMacs behind probably, so we would have to use proxys I suppose. The 4K 60fps without that much of a significant image loss is very exciting as well about this camera though. GH4 offers a "Full HD" 60fps which looks a lot worse than even the Full HD 24fps and 4K and this are like night and day of course. Another thing about choosing a camera now is that there might be new Alpha 7Sses coming out this year. Anyways, great video, so subscribed!

As someone that has owned the gh4 the nocticron 42.5mm f1.2 since release and also has a XL speed booster, and most of the decent Canon lenses (that I need) I think you should just forget autofocus and enjoy your canon lenses on the gh5 with a booster. Faster, and with satisfying manual focus. Then get something else for photography with AF. I love my gh4. But as good as the the AF is for a m43. It won't compete with a phase detect AF I know this means more gear, but having a cam for stills and a cam for video will give you the best of both. Something like an 80d for stills. Keep your canon lenses. Gh5 for video. Speedbooster. Done.

Right. You've got a wedding gig, and the bride is walking down the aisle towards you, and you can't afford to screw up. Do you go with a reliable autofocus? @biscuitsalive
@biscuitsalive 7 лет назад
simianinc for video or stills? I really can't see the gh5 AF being totally reliable for video. You need phase detect for fast reliable AF. It will be better than a gh4 no doubt. But never as good as manual for video.

According to the Pansonic engineer I saw interviewed at CES, the GH5 samples the sensor so quickly (I think it was something like 240fps, compared to 6fps for the GH4 - but don't quote me on the exact fps, as this is from memory), that it can alter it's focus super fast in response to it's reading. The proof, of course, will be when it's tested by third parties.
@biscuitsalive
@biscuitsalive 7 лет назад
simianinc that does sound impressive. And I haven't had my hands on the gh5 yet. But my guessing is even if it super fast the thing that bugs me with contrast AF is it has to go past focus point and pull back to know its bang on. So you get this horrible twitch as it goes just past perfect focus then snaps on. (As it doesn't know which way to move the focus plane, nearer or further) Which is fine for photography as long as it is super fast as it's only a tiny stall before shutter is triggered. But with continuous AF for video you see this twitch. Even if it is just for one frame. Where as with phase detect it knows which way to go. And snaps on. And even if the focus is slower with PD, it looks like a smooth manual focus puller, (more natural) Which isn't distracting for video.

Actually, I am working on a film now using a mix of just about every fast Lumix / Leica lens there is. But, also through the Metabones adaptor and a Canon 135 f/2 on the GX85 and GH5 and both were remarkably steady for long video holds, and sooo beautiful for portrait style closeups. IMO, IBIS is the best thing to find it's way into a camera in years, but yes Dual stabilization is even further enhanced. Love the Picasso scenario. Having lived through film, and every iteration of digital up until now, I'm at the point where art and technology collide. Enough tech to know what really matters, and a lot of heart to put it to good use. Great stuff, keep it up.

Hugh, love your blog and insights, just want to point out that the light gathering of the f stops on m43 is a true measure and down converting of f stops compared to FF is only in terms of perceived depth of field. an f1.2 m43 lens gathers just as much light as a FF f1.2 lens, but bokeh will be bigger on the FF camera. This is a common misconception and is something that is misrepresented all the time. Also, when dealing with 85mm and equivalents, or even longer focal lengths like the mentioned f4 300mm from olympus, perceived DOF matters little as DOF separation becomes easier and easier to obtain
@3BMEP
@3BMEP 7 лет назад
Of course you're right about light -- and separation at longer focal lengths! I don't mind f/4 on the Sony FE 70-200 for my work (I'm not a sports photographer, but like longer lenses for urban landscape - though back in the day I did shoot dancers and actors. That's when I owned the 200/1.8L). Then again, I wonder -- this was really my point, maybe I didn't make it well or I lost the plot -- that if you're shooting sports you are at a disadvantage with the smaller sensor and may be pushing the boundary of what is acceptable to you. Using a fast shutter speed to freeze (or sharpen) the action requires dialing up the ISO, where even one stop can make a noticeable difference. Separately: the Oly 300/4 is very interesting to me personally, but I've also come to realize that telephoto is one place where a zoom's flexibility may make more sense than a prime IF the IQ is good enough. More to ponder -- thanks so much for helping me think it through better!

Yes, the point I was trying to make is that the limitation is not in the glass or light gathering, it is the fact that as you push up ISO, the smaller sensor struggles with the gain, but that is one of the bragging points from the GH5's technical team, that the high ISO performance is improved. As a user of the GH system for years and owner of a 42.5 f1.2 nocticron, I think you would be making a great move to an amazing system, there are always compromises and limitations, but the camera in your hand as a working tool is amazing. All the best with your conundrum, I look forward to the next video.

Hey Hugh, again an awesome episode. I'm sticking with you since the first one, because the GH5 is very high on my priority list in 2017. I'm curious about the wide angle topic on MFT cameras/lenses. Does it bother you to have a crop factor of two? The GH5 would be my first MFT camera, until today I shot much everything from my own 60D (APS-C) to 5D Mk 2 and 3, Sony A7s (II) and some of the BlackMagic Cameras and wide angle was always something that was simply usable. In March I will be visiting the United States. A small tour in three weeks from Washington over Philly to New York. As a german filmmaker it would be awesome to meet up with you and do some tech talk. Greetings from Germany! :)

I am having the same conversations with myself in choosing a new system. The a6500 has a great sensor and AF, but no fast lenses for subject isolation. Where are the 60, 70, and 90mm 1.2 lenses? The GH5 has a great feature set, but base ISO is 200, how about 50? Phase detect. I suppose we should be grateful that we have so many options and can only complain about the last 1% away from perfection. Looking forward to Part 3.

Hello again, so i wanted to get your input as to the best first lens would be for the GH5 to shoot cinematic video ? Here are my options, Panasonic 25mm 1.4 Panasonic 15mm 1.7 Panasonic 12mm 1.4 Panasonic 42 .5= 85mm 1.7 olympus 50 macro 17 1.8 75 1.8

Johnathan Rockwell Let's step back and first ask: what subjects, what distances, what lighting, who for? All are capable of beautiful imagery in the right circumstances in the right hands! My first purchase has been the Sigma 30/1.4 - mostly for interviews and vlogging. Next will probably be Leica 15/1.7 for same! Oly 75/1.8 is brilliant and I love it, but I think after that I may move to a zoom for covering live events. Also, 42.5/1.7 is FF equivalent of 85/3.4 from a DOF perspective. :)

Just do this: GH5 + 12-35mm F2.8 OIS + Panasonic lens firmware upgrade H-H12035 Ver 1.3 (2) H-HS35100 Ver 1.3 I would be inclined to mount 12-35 first because it's all you ever use for discrete filmmaking. Cheers.

So your 12-35mm F2.8 is Ver 1.3 firmware. A really cheap solution for optimum stabilisation, 12-35 & 35-100.

I'm new to your channel and I love all your awesome videos! Very informative and quality is amazing! I do have a question about what lenses you like for your Panasonic camera and if there is any lens coming out that you looking to buy or recommend? I'm looking to make some travel videos and having difficulty deciding what lenses to buy for GH5. Thanks for answering and keep up the hard work to make all these fantastic masterpieces for us to watch! Cheers!

A million thanks for sharing so generously and deliciously your knowledge, your concerns and your own experience. They are a balm for mortals like me with their doubts and insecurities. User for many years of Sony, I have gone through FS100, Alpha 7s, FS7 and now with the 6300 and the Z150. Different cameras for different jobs. And there appears a small beast like the GH5 and everything seems to take a new dimension. A step beyond in quality, ergonomics and simplicity. But, what about small sensor and lenses. I am willing to sacrifice some things but there is something (apart from the depth of field and noise) that we must take care in reference to the character of the image, because for the same frame (in middle-general planes) we must use more wider lenses and, in some cases, that may mean not only a change of look but, especially at short distances of the subject, a non esthetic "deformation". This, for me is surely the biggest brake to this "step back size" ... Thanks so much Hugh

Joan Manel Amigó definitely one of the loose ends I'll be covering in Episode 3!
@vinzyvisuals6472
@vinzyvisuals6472 7 лет назад
Joan Manel Amigó when you mentioned about deformation at short distances, it also imply that the full frame equivalent at the same effective(sensor-size-wise) focal length will have less "deformation". Which I doubt. Can you elaborate ? PS: my context of question arises from my understanding that a pana lens at 7 mm will have the same amount of deformation as a 14mm full frame equivalent. Your statement makes me think that in the above mentioned context/situation, 7mm pana lens will have more deformation.
@Fleming062
@Fleming062 7 лет назад
My doubt is that to get the same angle of vision in a MFT sensor we will have to use wider lenses and this is where the risk is, especially in very open planes. I understand that to get the same framing of an FF with a 24mm lens we must use a 12 mm in MFT and that is indeed a significant change in deformation. I have not tried it but logic should be.

I need an asprin after that delivery! Very good thoughts on all levels, and for your needs, I think this is definitely THE camera! There's one BIG issue I have with Panasonic cameras, and that is it's razor sharp image, I mean, if you look at it too long, you're eyes will start bleeding, and there really isn't any way of taming that in post, that I've every liked. On the other hand, Panasonic makes THE most reliable cameras on the market...period. My eye is on this little Fuji X-T20, I just love the image off that sensor, and the film sims are an added bonus!
@3BMEP
@3BMEP 7 лет назад
I suspect you may be right about the GH5 meeting my needs. Re Fuji: I like the idea of Fuji film simulations, but I haven't yet gone hands-on for more than a couple of minutes with Fuji gear. I guess I'll have to rectify that situation!
@tubularsensation

Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions - I think it would be worth your time to check out the Fuji gear! The X-T2, and the March launch of the X-T20 would be of interest. I own the X Pro 2, and that shoots stunning 1080p, and hands down the best black and white video image I've ever seen with that Acros simulation! Fuji's biggest strength, in my opinion, is it's color science, it's just spot on.

Sir, I've been doing some research post seeing your video. You have recommended the "LEICA DG NOCTICRON 42.5mm F1.2" for GH5. I am an aspiring film maker and wondering if you could point me in the right direction. While the 4.2mm is a great lens, is it the best out there for film makers to achieve "that" film look or should I settle down with a Rokinon Cine lens? Please advise at your convenience.
