"Even the most impossible parts of this story really happened." I'll never forget those words. Chilling, but memorable. Also, The Ghost and the Darkness i such an underrated gem of a movie. True protagonists vs nature done. In an expert manner, this is based off a true story.

This is based on a true story. The actual 2 lions that did all this are stuffed and on display at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago..I've seen them! It's a great movie with great actors.

I went on safari, once. If you can afford it, go to Kenya or Tanzania (not South Africa). It’s awesome and worth it. Don’t worry about the big cats, they won’t bother you, as long as you stay in your Land Cruiser. There’s more than enough other prey on the Serengeti 😂

I’ve been to the museum in Chicago where the lions are on display and they actually are kinda terrifying to look at and knowing how many people they officially killed is mind blowing!!!!!

Val Kilmer was Fantastic in this one as he was as Doc Holiday in Tombstone. And Michael Douglas (his dad is Kirk Douglas, another great actor) was Great too. Actual true story.

The two male lions, which went mostly unseen, were named the Ghost and the Darkness. Maneless lions have never been so scary. The skins and skulls of the man-eating lions of Tsavo were sold in 1924 to the Field Museum in Chicago, Ill., where the skins were mounted into taxidermy that can still be seen today. 119 years ago, these two massive, maneless, man-eating lions hunted railway workers in the Tsavo region of Kenya. During a nine-month period in 1898, the lions killed at least 35 people and as many as 135, according to different accounts

@@chrisf8855 Male lion in Tsavo do not have manes. It's not certain why though some zoologists speculate it's because of the extreme heat in that region. I've read Patterson's book. Very interesting but if anyone wants to read it now just be aware that it was written in a different time. Only the first third of the book is about the lions. The rest is about other experiences and hunts he had in Africa.

I love this movie. They don't just have a picture of the Lions in the museum, they have the actual stuffed lions in Chicago. I saw them long ago on a trip in high school. I'm 6'5" tall and they could almost look me in the eyes when they were standing on all four feet. Truly sent a shiver down my spine when I came around a corner in the museum and was face to face with them. They looked unusual not only because of their size, but also because they were fully grown males but didn't have manes. The death toll between the two was estimated as high as 135 people on the railway site. Great reaction! Not many people react to this one, thank you.

Oh shit, I literally gasped when I saw this. Such an underrated film! You never see reactors do this one! I'm so excited for this. Should be right when I'm wrapping up with work tomorrow, too. Incidentally, I have the book that inspired this saved in my Amazon cart. Really need to order that, too. Oh and by the by, if you guys are ever looking for other massively underrated 90s films, I have to throw "Instinct" (1999) and "Just Cause" (1995) into the ring. Impressive casting, but hardly anyone has heard of them it seems.

YES!!! LOVE THIS MOVIE!! Based on a true story! The tagline reads, "Even the most incredible/impossible parts of this story really happened." I looked up the reviews on Amazon after I got this on DVD in October 2015, and they were positive, with some saying "this movie scared the hell out of me, this movie is awesome, this movie is epic, loved this movie as a kid," etc.

I had forgotten how good this movie is. It's the classic monster movie plot but with monsters that really exist. I figure that the common childhood fear of monsters lurking in the darkness is an instinctive fear based on people being preyed on by big cats. So this movie might be playing to some built in instinctual fears we all have.

Saw this in the theater. Between the soundtrack (beautiful & perfect!) & the sounds of the lions (from a soft growl to a roar) it was quite a thrilling experience. I once stood less than 20 feet from a lion & it roared a couple of times. They weren't even full-throated roars but I felt the vibration in my chest & then throughout my whole body & being. They're such beautiful & amazing creatures. I hope & pray all the efforts to keep them from extinction in the wild succeed. 💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙

I knew a lady who ran a sanctuary for wild carnivores. She took a group of us out there, one Saturday, to show us around, and help her feed them. I locked eyes with one of the lionesses, and she crept around to a shelter, (it was like an oversized doghouse), got up on top of it, and leapt at me, throwing herself against the chain link fence, which was the only thing separating us. She did this repeatedly. It was very unnerving.

@@kimberlygabaldon3260 It was the locking eyes part. In the wild, or even with an unfamiliar dog, this means you straight up want a fight. You can look into the eyes of your own dog or cat, or an animal you know and are close with, because you've established a bond and understanding, but to a wild animal or even a domesticated animal that you dont know, this is or can be a direct challenge to fight. Apparently she was ready to throw down lol.

@@loribernardisunwell9663 I understand that, but it was unintentional. I was just standing there looking at her, and she suddenly turned her head and stared right into my eyes. It was only a second. I quickly looked away from her eyes, but she immediately locked on to me, visually, and crouched down low, climbed up onto her "doghouse, and launched herself, slamming into the fence. She never took her eyes off of me, nor did she roar or vocalize in any way. She was dead silent. I moved away with the rest of the group, (and avoided looking at her), but she kept doing it over and over, even after we had walked about 40 or 50 feet away. The animals in the sanctuary were accustomed to humans. They had all been born in captivity, then either surrendered when they got too big, or seized by authorities. The same sanctuary had had a Siberian tiger bite off the arm of one of their volunteers, a couple of years before. The woman who ran the sanctuary told us all about it. She was there when it happened. It had been all over the news. I never had any desire to work with big cats. Or bears. Or primates. I'd rather deal with almost anything else.

I just posted a similar experience but in my case it was a tiger. I was no more than 6ft from her when she roared and you can absolutely feel it resonate through your entire body! I could be holding a bazooka and there's still no way I'd go head to head with any big cat.

There are some great documentaries on youtube about these lions. The actual death count is 130 or 140. Although some events here were dramatized the actual story was really worse. The lions are in the Field Museum in Chicago, but because the skins spent many years as rugs, there was heavy damage done to the hides. Large portions had to be cut off to be able to reshape them and stuff them. So in real life they were much bigger than how they appear today.

This was a true story, although the character played by Michael Douglas never existed. It was determined later that the lions had health issues that prompted them to seek easier prey. Dental problems I think it was....with around 130-140 killed.

Yeah, Producer Michael Douglas wanted a "badass" role in the movie, so they wrote him one, downplaying Patterson who killed both Meaneaters by himself in real life.

2 years after watching this film, my wife and I spent the first night of our honeymoon in Tsavo East and went on safari around the area, crossing the railway depicted in the film. At night you could hear Lions calling out and it truly makes your hair stand on end. A terrific film which being based on a true story, makes you appreciate the challenges faced by all involved. Diseases, wildlife, the climate and the cunning of the Ghost and the Darkness.

I remember seeing the movie and was terrified of the lions. Years later, I was in Chicago to see relatives and decided to go to the museum where the Tsavo Man-Eaters were housed. To this day, decades later, I still felt a sense of unease and dread looking into their eyes. I know the eyes were glass and all, but I felt like I was looking into the eyes of serial killers and only a thin piece of glass stood between them and me.

Just remember those models were actually way smaller than the real lions. The actual lions were over 9 ft. from nose to tail.

This is such an amazing film. Of course being based on a true story, there are liberties taken, but the overall story itself is as accurate as it can be regarding the lions hunting and being difficult to kill. Great reaction guys!

If I’m not badly mistaken, both of these lions were stuffed and now reside in the Field Museum in Chicago. They were also mane-less males. Credited with between 35 and 135 (reports vary) men killed during their rampage. I personally can’t think of a more horrific death.

You made a wise choice. The movie is based on a true story, even if it takes certain liberties....Val Kilmer was also in Willow where he met his wife, she played Sorsha. He was also in a movie called the "Saint" which was really good that came out around the same time as this one, where he was a master thief.

Love this movie. It never gets old. Yes Val Kilmer was your huckleberry Doc Holiday in tombstone, Brad Pitt was in Seven. Val is also in another great movie called Heat. It's a great action movie with Robert de Niro and some more famous actors. One of the greatest shootout scenes ever. Den of Thieves is another great action movie kinda like Heat. It is a newer movie with a great shootout scene. You should check them both out. Michael Douglas is in Ghost and the Darkness too. His dad was the famous actor Kurt Douglas.

damn finally somebody checked this movie out, definitely deserves more attention, remember watching it back in the day as a kid and it was a pretty damn intense experience :D watching it as an adult I can appreciate all the good stuff about it, they got the atmosphere spot on, the score, the suspense, its very well paced, nicely shot, very impressive how they managed to use real lions, a well made movie :) didnt know its actually based on a true story till recently :D

Love this movie! This is what I immediately thought of when I saw the trailer for Idris Elba’s movie Beast. Hope you guys enjoy it as well! Lions might resort to hunting humans when they’re sick or injured because we’re easier prey than their normal preferences & I believe is said might’ve been the case for these lions.

I have seen the actual 2 lions at the Chicago Museum. They have mains that are quite small compared to what you think a lion main would be. I recall that the description of them stated they were much bigger than normal lions, like 1 1\2 times as big as a normal male lion.

Lions in that region don't really have manes because of all the scrub brush and thickets. I believe that is unique to that region only. Also, they were much bigger in life than they are in the museum. For many years they were used as rugs and the hides were so badly damaged that large parts had to be removed before being able to stuff them.

Val Kilmer played Doc Holiday in "Tombstone". Check him out in the film "Real Genius". I hate that guy already and I've not even left the room. The sound track is so good on this film. The Ghost and The Darkness are at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. They have no manes like the lions in the film. Beaumont wanted to beat the Germans and the French building this bridge. He wanted his knighthood.

The guys with the spears that were drinking cows blood are Maasai, a tribe from East Africa. I don't know what their customs are now, but back in the day they would drink blood from their cattle. They were also considered to be legendary hunters and they trained to kill lions with those spears.

May years ago, I was in a hide (a trench covered with reeds and such) at the Mt. Etjo reserve in Namibia. Lions are very active at night. A carcass was provided and very soon a couple of male lions came and began to tear into it. I and those with me were about fifteen feet away (it felt a lot closer). After starting in on the carcass, the two males started to engage in a test of strength, each one trying to pull the meat away from the other. While doing this, they were almost silent. Then one let out a snarl I will never forget and struck at the other. The speed of the strike was unreal. Between the snarl and the speed, I was momentarily paralyzed. Fortunately, my videocamera was already running. And I will never forget those eyes.

I remember seeing the actual lions at the Field Museum in Chicago when I was 10 years old…it was intense. It was right after I had seen the movie.

I saw these lions in the Field Museum, the only difference is that they were maneless lions. What they have in Chicago is smaller than they actually were too because they were REALLY shot up, and much of their hide was missing. But the most terrifying thing about the trip was the Dan Ryan freeway, and the parking bill.

The man who said he killed a lion with his bare hands is Masi, they are known lion hunters and have trained instincts to pick up lions. It's part of their rites to kill a lion. The two Tsavo lions were thought to be reincarnated witch doctors who intended to return to get rid of the colonists and those who would help them from their lands. They were unusual, strangely developed, and are now in a museum stuffed.

Val Kilmer was in Tombstone as Doc Holiday. He was also in Top Gun as Iceman. He was also in Heat, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Spider-Man Edge of Time. Batman Forever as Bruce Wayne. Just to name a few. BJ you were correct, that is Michael Douglas. He is a great actor, a credit to his father Kirk Douglas. You should check out some of their moves. some day.

Thank you so much! Some of my favorite movies are like this one, underrated gems that no one reacts to. I've loved this movie since I was a kid! I grew up hunting with my father and brother. It was a big part of my life and still is. Most of our meals were some type of wild game as a child. Anyway I really enjoyed the reaction! Great choice!

Don’t overplay it though, a good man knows he needs to do good for his family. What y’all do is so damn critical in every way to making sure our species survives. Val Kilmar was in Tombstone. He portrayed Doc Holiday, who was coughing because he was dying of tuberculosis. He was from Georgia but moved west for the dryer climate for his tuberculosis. Brad Pitt was in the movie Seven with Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey

You two are so funny when reacting to movies 🤣🤣 After the last two very intense movies you saw this week I highly suggest reacting to another comedy. I would love it if you could react to more John Candy movies. You would absolutely love "Uncle Buck" (my favorite John Candy film) and "The Great Outdoors" with Dan Aykroyd. Both are hilarious movies that really show off Candy's comedic chops. I also highly recommend reacting to "The Naked Gun" film series with Leslie Nielson. At least react to the first one. Leslie Nielson is downright awesomely funny and you will be on the floor dying of laughter. As always keep up the good work!!!!

One of the reasons I love this movie is the overall theme of man’s experience with fear. Each main character represents a different way to handle fear, with Colonel Patterson (Kilmer) accepting and respecting his fear, and choosing to still do what needs to be done with an intelligence and determination. The characters who die off are those who try to mask their fear in false bravado, ignore fear, or rely on an external source of comfort to squelch their fear. Michael Douglas even has a line when he’s going to dance with the Masai how he’s going with the others to “pretend to be brave”.

Went to the zoo with my kids and nephews and visited the lion habitat. The children were small and squirrely, and their running around and excited squealing caught the undivided attention of one of the lionesses. She stood on a fallen log as close as she could get and stared, unblinking and unmoving, while the children played. All I could think was, "all that is between her and my children is a dry moat and a tiny wire fence." We left right away to go look at the zebras. Even though we were safe, it was quite unnerving. I can't even imagine being in Africa, where there is nothing between your children and the lions except flimsy little you. I'll watch them on my tv, thanks.
