The town of Weisburg, Indiana was laid out in 1858 and was named after Phillip Weis a local mill owner. At one time the town of Weisburg was a major center of activity in the northern section of Dearborn County. Once home to a hotel, train depot, a mill and grain business, a post office, two stores, a blacksmith shop and several saloons. Weisburg had a one room school house which burned in 1940. A set of railroad tracks runs directly through town and at one time there were two sets of tracks. In the early 1900s a spark from a steam locomotive ignited a fire in Wesiburg which consumed several buildings.
Weisburg is also known for its extremely productive fossil beds with information listed in school books used by universities around the country.
As rail transportation gave way to the automobile, Weisburg slowly turned into the small cluster of houses you now see as you drive through town.

My husband and I wanted to turn the old store into an antique shop, and home but parking caused an issue we didn't know how to fix. Glad someone is now living there!

I remember going in the store when I was fossil hunting with my dad, sometime around 1980.

Fun fact... in our main room due to it having been a store there are 162 shelves lining the walls! I was counting as I was painting them a couple years ago and couldn't believe that there were really that many.

This is a great video. I'd never heard of this community...until now, but it looks to be a picturesque town. Thanks for posting.

I believe that's the train from the Honda plant in Greensburg, headed for Cincinnati, at the end of the video.

I remember the store! My dad would take me fossil hunting there and I remember the store was old and kinda run down and had one of those old-fashioned pop machines where you opened the lid and moved the bottles out horizontally.

Go to your county auditors office, they can give you the chain of title going back to when it was built.

I live in the old general store. My grandmother bought it in 2015. We are trying to get a historic loan to fix it up but we are not sure how. If anyone can help us out it would be greatly appreciated.

I can say a lot of reasons these small towns die off is because kids that live there cannot wait to leave! Not much action going on in a small town unless you’re into cow tipping!

Thanks for the video. Please do one on Mechanicsburg in Decatur County. My grandfather went there for school. As schools consolidated, these little schools and towns disappeared. Thanks again!

I am from Greensburg and my great uncle had the general store and post office in Kingston. School is falling in and the store has been leveled but the church and cemetery is still there. Thanks for doing these videos.

Thank you for that video. I was married in that church in 2000 and went to services there with my grandparents in the 60s and 70s. Many Easter Egg Hunts on that yard! Thank you so much.

A couple enters Gastons Wood Finishing Supplies I worked at in the mid 80s. They have come to purchase supplies and gain knowledge of architectural wood restoration. They start talking about a grandiose idea of buying an small abandoned town in Southern Indiana. I'm young and nieve to the world yet. Under my breath say I got some swamp land in Florida for sale. After a fantastic "story" and a gracious sale of merchandise the couple heads out of the store. Waving good bye. Under my breath. "They really did buy and abandoned town and restoring it for a bed and breakfast community. Imagine that!" Now you know the beginning of the "Story". Goodwood Day

It's not a ghost town. Some people still live there. No explanation for why the town died out.

I question, "...is basically a ghost town." It either is, or it isn't. Since people live there, I would say it is not.

Does anyone know the names of the students of Weisburg School or have a copy of the original photo? I'm pretty certain the boy in the first row third from the left is my grandpa. I asked him but he doesnt remember.

I have lived on Weisburg rd (nearly) my entire life. That's so neat if it's your grandpa! I have an uncle-in-law & all of siblings that went to that school too. I didn't know there was such a bad fire! I literally live adjacent to the 2and schoolhouse grounds of Weisburg our property was the well fetch'n place. The kids would walk here to get a drink. There's actually 6 wells on our property... guess they just kept digg'n!

it is very sad that smallest town little towns and other different towns on the 50 states that are big city and suburb cities and small town it will be the ghost town of today right now in 2018 and 19 and 20 20 but the problem is that I get more depression coming together as a family as the United as one in working together and all different language that are bringing them together as if working some new ideas to get past the gift I hope for this one account for the future because the big city is taking your people and to go over there to see big city and then your people will be disappearing on Sunday older small town and that will be like a ghost town seriously I am telling the truth for all of you that you don't like my message then don't say anything because this is going to be my own words
