The Giant Vinegaroon, Mastigoproctus giganteus rehouse and care
The Giant Vinegarooon is a sub tropical beastie that enjoys a deep substrate with a high humidity, that being said they have a huge range and can tolerate wide extremes within that range some being found in arid conditions too, this makes them very easy to care for because of their ability to withstand these changes.

I live in New Mexico USA at 6000ft and find these little beasties all the time both inside and outside. The first one I encountered scared the doodoo out of me (they are enormous!), but I immediately noticed how docile and "friendly" they are. I am not brave enough to handle one but I always catch/release them with no problem.

I had one for a few years (was already a full adult when I got her) and she was great. I would tong feed her a couple times a week and she was pretty quick to get used to my presence. I'd handle her occasionally and she was actually pretty keen to climb on my hand with no encouragement, and since she always used her antennaform legs to "snif" me before climbing, she understood (as much as a vinegaroon can) that she was about to climb me and not just a random rock or whatever. She never once sprayed me, and I only saw her get riled up once when a roach made some of the moss in her enclosure move all at once. A great little animal that I can't wait to get another of. Just be prepared to not see them for 2-4 months at a time in winter, and be a little worried every time they dig under that it's the last time you'll see them alive. As far as sexing them, I know you can tell by looking at the "thorn" on their pedipalps; I can't remember offhand which is which, but it's a pretty accurate method.

What a brilliant animal, they actually are arachnids (same order as spiders and scorpions) and those long wispy “antenna” are actually modified legs, known as antenniform legs. They have evolved to fill the same role that normal insect antenna do!

Great video Dave! The M giganteus is my favourite invert to date, since I picked a couple up at the 2022 BTS. Its hard to sex them correctly, but there is some sexual dimorphism in them - the males have a slimmer abdomen and much larger pedipalps. Also, the first three segments on the underside of the abdomen are different in males and females. Anyways, looking at the specimen in the vid, I'd say its safe to assume he's a male, just going off the size of his pedipalps alone. I'm actually trying to breed these little buggers. Like I mentioned, picked up a pair at BTS. The male has now sadly passed away (the joys of buying adult inverts I guess), but I did manage to pair them once (the mating process took 14 hours), so I'm hoping for a bunch of babies this spring

Here in New Mexico they are pretty common. When we lived south of Deming our tomcat found one in our garage. He started pawing at it and it shot acid directly in his face. He started wiping his eyes and I grabbed him and took him in the house to wipe his face with a wet cloth. Some people say they vinegaroons don’t squirt acid, but we saw it firsthand.

Working on the computer late one night, I peripherally noticed movement on the floor and was startled by the presence of a large vinegarroon (I live in Arizona, USA, elevation 5000 feet). I gently swept it outside with a slipper and noted that it was quite docile. My daughter then informed me that her best friend keeps a pair of vinegarroons in a terrarium and takes them out occasionally to observe and interact with them on the floor.

I know you're not going to believe me but back in the early 80s I lived in Roswell NM. I came across several different insects that were way more larger than they were supposed to be. A vinegaroon was one of them. When I was leaving for work one morning there was a dead one on the patio. It was about 6 inches wide and 14 to 16 inches long not counting the whip. I showed it to alot of people and Noone had seen one anywhere close to that size. I also came across 3 dead centipedes while walking down a dirt road. These things were 4 feet to 6 ft long and as big around as a big man's thumb. They were red with big bright yellow legs. Centipedes kind of freak me out so I left them but to this day I don't know what species they were.
