Many don't know the differences between a standard production Les Paul and a custom shop Les Paul. A custom shop Gibson will cost way more money so they better be good. Haha!
In reality, the only similarity between them is the body shape and the wood species used. In this video I'm showing you all you need to know about these guitars.
LET THE GIBSON BATTLE BEGIN! :) Les Paul Standard vs Custom Shop Les Paul 58 Reissue

I've been playing guitar for 61 years. My Les Paul's have included '52, '54 , '69 fretless wonder '70 deluxe, '75 standard and '06 studio models. They were all different. I don't consider any of them better than the other. None were bad, just different. I will say that the '52 was the most different and for me a little less enjoyable to play because of the tail piece. Great video! Now I know the difference in a standard and a custom shop.

It's a shame you let the 54 LP get away. That's one I've always wanted. I did the same thing with a first year stratocaster back in the 80s.

This is so informative. It confirms and dispells so much that is out there that we can not visually compare because it's just hearsay on forums. It's really great to have somebody go into the details that has actually seen and felt an original late 50's Burst and then picked the differences between the current production models What I really appreciated was the objective approach you too to it

The CS did sound slightly better to my ears, probably the PU's had a lot to do with it. But I'm sure the molecularly correct plastic parts also added to the tone. And of course the more colorful sunburst paint ads a more colorful tone.

Great video Kris! I've been playing Fenders for 50 years and recently bought an Epiphone Les Paul custom pro. (Shhh, I'm kinda becoming a Les Paul guy now!) The sound of the custom shop guitar seems more full and smooth. Your descriptions of the differences between these two guitars is great information. This is the most informative review I've seen on guitars. Looks like there may be a CS Les Paul in my future! Thanks

Heres my thing. You want a late 50's burst, get a custom shop. You just a good old Les Paul standard that is gonna do the job done, get a standard production model. Ultimately those tiny differences aren't gonna make a difference once you record you guitar parts or plug it into an amp and pedals. Just cause its more expensive, doesn't always mean its gonna be better.

The guitar is only as good as the player playing it. What I'm hearing doesn't justify the difference in cost. The standard sounds slightly compressed in comparison. Not a big deal!

Really enjoyed your comments. Earlier today I compared a standard and CS Goldtop. I found the best way to compare their sound was playing one or two chords in repeated succession on each and to discern the difference. The key however is to turn the amp OFF, and listen to the difference in resonance and depth. The CS takes the gold medal. Oh, have to say the P90 pups take the trophy too.

Great video. I think my eyes were tricking my ears into thinking the custom shop sounded better. But to be honest, they both sound great. It's really all about how it feels to the player, especially the resonance. The more the player feels connected to the guitar the more enjoyable and better the playing! There is definitively a difference (probably due to the fact that the 58' pickups are lower outputs) but not as drastic as I would have imagined - which is quite telling about how good the standard 50 sounds. Interestingly, I found the bridge pickups more different that the neck ones - and I play almost exclusively on the neck. Btw, your intro is really killer!

You know what would be (another) a great video, Kris? Modding/upgrading that Standard Les Paul, to try and make it sound as close as possible to that Custom Shop Les Paul. Maybe showing the impact of each modification along the way and then comparing the whole modded package against the CS. It would be a great for a) understanding how far one can actually go into having that lovely CS clarity on a Standard, b) understand which change has the most impact and c) encourage (or not) people into making those mods. Challenging, I know... :) Anyway, this one was fantastic. By far, the best comparison video on this subject. Keep up the great work.

Awesome - I learned a lot from this very thorough comparison! There is a striking difference in tone, and what is amazing to me is how consistently you play the parts in order to A/B compare. I'll assume you're using the same settings in the signal chain, so my only question is to what degree is any difference in pickup output level affecting that overall tonal difference? I know that's hard to account for. I recently acquired a 2019 Standard production Model with P90s and just love it, but that's a whole different animal.

During my playing career from 1969 until 1978, I owned five Les Paul guitars.......54 Goldtop, 56 Goldtop, 58 Standard Sunburst, 68 Reissue Goldtop & 69 LP Custom. Except for the Custom with the ebony fingerboard and quite thin neck profile, and though I didn’t know why, there were distinct differences in feel and sound for the other four. With all of those guitars, I used Fender amps (Blackface Twin, Pro Reverb, Deluxe Reverb, & Tan Cabinet Bassman) and Fender R&R 10-46 strings and basically thought everything sounded the same. While the “feel” was a bit different due to neck widths, I thought they all sounded very similar. For me, I believe it was because of the “feel” coming thru my hands and fingers and what I heard thru my ears. Just my hands-on take and what I remember now that I’m 76 years old. BTW: wonderful video.

First of all, great video and great playing, Kris ! This aligns with my own finding from playing several of each and owning a modded '13 Traditional: overall, the CS and production models sound and feel different, because of the small differences you pointed out. A big one for me being the finish, the production models feels glassier (from a thicker, more "plasticky" finish) while the CS feels more traditional. But maybe that's because all the CS I've played were VOS finish, not high gloss. As for sounds, the production ones are a bit thicker and more muscular, while the CS sound more airy and woody. Almost like they're geared towards different styles. The production models feel like they're geared towards heavier and more modern rock, while the CS have a more bluesy, old-school vibe. Also as a whole the production models are heavier than the CS, in my experience. Both great guitars, but to me the difference in price is worth it for the CS. And in the end, they're still just tools for making music, what matters is what you do with them.

Thanks for the information Kris. I've been comparing the differences between the CS models and standard USA production models, trying to evaluate the differences, and this made a very succinct informative list. I'm a fan of some of the specs and differences you get with the CS models. I care less about the plastics, but I do like the idea of the different nitro, long tenon, and non-weight relieved body. I agree, the changes on their own are relatively small, but as a total package they can sway some players and translate to some better sounds. I haven't added a CS reissue burst style guitar to the collection yet, but would like to at some point, and I appreciate the classic feel and look that they offer. Great review!

This is the best comparison on the subject. You can clearly hear the sound differences. I am gonna go against the grain by saying that I favour the sound of the Standard when you play with gain/overdrive. It is punchier, more low mids which I like for heavy rock playing. Also, the highs are rounder. The CS sounds snappier, more open if you want to call it like that. I already had the same conclusion about this because I have a 2011 R9 and a '93 and '06 Standard. Very good playing, by the way. Very informative channel, I'm subscribing!

Great video, very informative and really well presented, the custom shop is beautiful. One thing that may be worth clarifying is that many of the new standards from 2019 onwards are one piece bodies and all have no weight relief. My Les Paul Standard 50s from May 2020 definitely is a one piece body. Another interesting point is about the neck tenon, the custom shop model is the best of both worlds having the best finish, pickups, one piece body, thick neck and long tenon, a demonstration of a sum of its parts. However, I have an epiphone les paul 60s tribute plus, which has the solid body (no idea how many pieces as the finish is solid black) with no weight relief, solid maple cap with flame veneer, Gibson 57 classic pickups, thinner 60s slim taper neck with long neck tenon, but has a thick polyurethane finish. My Gibson with nitro finish, one piece body, thicker 50s neck but short tenon blows it out of the water in terms of note clarity and sustain. So in my experience, the chunkier neck, better quality wood of the 1 piece body and the nitro finish is much more important than the tenon length. The finish might be the biggest factor in play for that comparison. Again, a great video

Great in depth review of both guitars and some really nice playing. But there's no chance in hell you tell two guitars apart based on wether the truss-rod is in a plastic tube or not. At least not when played through and amp. I guess it might be possible to sort of tap the neck and listen for a more hollowed out (or not) response, though.

Well done review. Both awesome guitars and honestly it seems to come down to personal choice and affordability.

Yes, those things you mentioned are definitely differences one from the other. However, they are quite small and in the end, I believe the average player does not really care that much, especially for the vast price difference, seeing how even a basic Gibson model is more expensive then a Fender, etc.

Very interesting! I never really knew most of these differences. I was only aware of a few. I have a custom shop LP and I really do love it. I honestly don't think I've ever played a production model except a friend's LP Studio, which is more budget, so it's not a fair comparison. (Still a good guitar though!) Thanks for he video!

Great video, Thanks! For me, the Gold Top has more low mids while the CS may have a cleaner, tighter, or brighter low end. The least expenceive CS is twice the price of a Standard, but to me didn't sound twice as good, maybe it feels or plays twice as good, but I didn't hear that mentioned. Anyway thanks again!

I think you’re spot on with the notion that all the little details add up w/ the custom shop to make a better sounding guitar (not that the regular Standard isn’t a good sounding guitar, it is). I have both also, they’re just very different sounding and feeling guitars despite that they look so similar. Very informative/useful and unbiased demo, good stuff!

Great comparison. It comes down to the 1 percent issues. I have a 2016 GCS and there is something special about it, even unplugged as you say. It gets even better when plugged in.

Great explanation video of all the differences in specs Kris! Thumps up👍👍also for editing! I'm looking for the 57 custom goldtop after seeing this video. Your custom sounds awesome. Can i ask is you swapped your CB pickups, or is just the cover removed? Saw on Insta that your neck pickup also misses the cover. Even more better? Grtzzz Leon

Great rundown, thanks for taking the time! The Standard seemed a bit 'tamer', more constrained, than the Custom Shop, which 'sang' a bit more, better projection, I think. Obviously pick-ups play a part in this. I have played a number of Custom Shop & Standards these last few years and have found a couple of Custom Shops that I really love . . . a bit out of my price range but they have that late 60's Page / Clapton / Green 'bite' that recordings from that era (which I grew up listening to) all have. I still have the 1968 LP Custom I bought off a friend in 1974 and it's my 'control' for sound and feel, the ebony fretboard and slimmer neck just feel right for me, unsurprising after 50+ years of playing it, I guess 😀Cheers!

That was an awesome review/information. Actually the best comparison so far. Love the way you are explaining and keeping it neutral. That way its easier to get a better understanding and, how should I say it, a fair insight without being influenced to either the Standard or a Custom Shop by your personal thoughts about any of them. You let us to decide that, thumbs UP! =)

Just another great video! Nothing new in it for me, but it is still a perfect comparison which doesn’t miss any detail and can easily act as a reference. Plus the great playing! Kris has really well-deserved his status as a yt demo guitarist, and even better to know he is just a real „normal“ guy from flesh&bones because you can see him very often when just dropping in at Thomann‘s guitar department 😃

That’s a great comparison! I watched it, then replaced my Standard 50s with a Historic 58 and now I’m very happy! I agree that those two guitars have a lot of differences. What hasn’t been mentioned is the cases are different, Custom Shop have historically correct binding bleeding and, what was hugely important for me, Custom Shop nitro just smells soooo good, man! I subscribed to see more stuff like this!

Hey Chris great video! Thanks for posting. Liked and subscribed. One question - does the custom shop really play better? I'm most concerned with the fretboard ease of play, for bends and ease of sliding up and down the frets. I'm thinking of buying the Custom Axcess with the Floyd rose, but no store anywhere near me has any customs. Thanks!

Great video! Thanks. I have two Les Pauls (plus an old Epiphone), a 2016 R8 and a 2019 Classic. I changed the pickups and wiring harness in both and the are both very capable guitars - just different. Also, changing things was way less needed in the R8 as I changed for some PAF-ish. But it was lots of fun and it sounds 8% better (exactly 🙃). The Classic sounds 100% better!

Great video. I preferred the tone of the custom shop guitar, which seemed a little brighter and more 'snappy'. But overall the production guitar was 99% there for 50% (or less) of the money. I have a 2016 'Traditional' into which I dropped some Montys PAF style pickups. That gave me the last 1%, tone wise.
