Welcome to my review of the Gibson ES-335 Electric guitar. This is way better than my old 2007 version. The setup, action, pickups, and tone are all much better. This video is not sponsored.

You made that 335 sing and talk at the same time. I can tell you and it got along very well. It's tough when you're just trying a guitar and it speaks to you in such a manner and then having to take it back or leave it. What a wonderful instrument.

That ES335 sounds great. For the record, I own a 57/58 pristine ES335 TDN with Bigsby factory fitted. The guitar is a tobacco sunburst and is all original with a bound fret board and a short pick guard. Some say the pickguard should have been a long one, but I've had it since 1968, and to my knowledge it is the original one that was fitted. It also has round dot inlays on the fingerboard. It is still protected in its original case, which is black and grey. I bet you could make it sound great - you are such a good player. I picked up that you are in Australia. Me also, I'm in Queensland on the Sunshine coast. Cheers mate.

Norman Harris from Norm’s Rare Guitars in LA said that he rented the ES guitar for Back to the Future. He said he told the filmmakers that it was not period correct because the movie was set in 1955 but the ES series was not released until 1958. Obviously the filmmakers decided it fit the scene and the rest is history. 🎸

GREAT 335! I think the old 1 you had came from a very LOW part of the Henry J era. Many of Gibson's instruments had quality that was all over the place! I remember that old ES Tokai of yours. @michaelheller8841
@michaelheller8841 6 месяцев назад
It really does , I have the new ES-345 in the USA line and I didn’t feel or hear for me to spend another $2200 or so on it’s Custom Shop. That’s not always the case though. I own a Custom Shop Les Paul R8 and it’s a lot better than the USA line. At the end of the day we have to pick one up and play it. I was really expecting to pay Custom Shop money on the ES-345 but I was more than happy that I didn’t have to.
@Tweed_Tone
@Tweed_Tone 6 месяцев назад
@@michaelheller8841 yeah the construction is pretty much the same for USA vs custom shop minus the real and-1 bridge and neck tenon. I agree about the noticeable quality difference between a USA Les Paul vs custom shop, they cut a lot more corners the LP such as 2 piece bodies and heavier woods, they don’t do that with the ES models, the bodies are built the same with USA/Custom shop.
@michaelheller8841

@@Tweed_Tone absolutely. My R8 Les Paul is my number one because it just does what it does and very well. The ES-345 make no mistake it’s my numeric two and she can argue why aren’t I number one? Great guitars and it’s nice to have a few nice guitars for different jobs.

As a youngster, I became fascinated with ES-style guitars after seeing BB King on TV, mostly on public television and one episode of Sanford and Son. Although I don't sound like him, he was my first musical influence. One good semi hollow-body and one good S-style will cover the bases for most guitar based music. I always preferred dot inlays and translucent cherry finish on ES shaped guitars. Sadly, I have found Gibson to be profoundly hit and miss. My semi hollow-body is a Heritage H535. It's in translucent cherry and has dots.
@michaelheller8841

I currently own 4 different Gibsons but I would like to own one day a Heritage that’s the right one. I like their story and I never hear anything negative about the guitars or the company. I can only afford an equal payment plan right now and sadly I don’t see that with any Heritage dealer. Maybe one day that will change.

ES-335s seem to be some of the most hit-or-miss guitars out there. There are absolute dogs and absolute gems and everything in between. And it doesn't seem to correlate much with the price either. Just have to go out and try out as many as possible. This one sounds very clear, one of the good ones

100% true. Think it is because they don't make many of them. Mine was a miss. Had to bring it to a luthier who adjusted the nut slots, bridge slots and relevel and reseat some of the frets. Now it sounds and plays great.

Great video, and timely for me- I, too, recently got my hands on a guitar that defied a lot of what I thought. ( In my case, an AIO Wolf KSA 90- basically an ES-339 clone with a couple of differences)- strange how that thing makes a person "time travel", eh? What I mean is that you suddenly re-connect with feelings and values you had those 15 years ago, before you decided on a different path. But, back to this guitar- yeah, sounds like the pick ups are the "57 classic" which is a better version of the "PAF" configuration, in my opinion. A little less hot than burstbuckers on the mids, a little more hot on the high end.
@GCKelloch
@GCKelloch 6 месяцев назад
That's what less winds does. The Q and resonant freq go up. It can make the high end stick out (depending on the pot values, cable capacitance b4 the first preamp stage, and the preamp impedance) so the midrange is relatively less forward.

I swapped out the pickups in one of these for a customer a could months ago. He thought the T-type were too harsh, i had to agree. I replaced them with a pair of underwound PAFs, and they were perfect. I'm still amazed at how people will get rid of guitars they otherwise love because they don't like the amplified sound, like replacing pickups isn't even a consideration. And it's not just bedroom players, I've read those stories from people that should know better, like writers for guitar magazines that do gear reviews🤨. I always found the Classic 57s to be the absolute worst pickups to use in 335s, they were way too muddy. Yet Gibson constantly used them even though they had BB I & IIs on hand, which after much meet choices. I'm really surprised you find the middle pickup position to be underutilized. Every 335 player i know as well as myself tend to live in that middle position and use the volume controls to dial it in. On solid bodies i don't use it that much, but semihollow it's the place to be I don't know if it's just the perspective of the camera and watching it on a video, but the the cutaways look shallower.

I have a Chibson that I picked up for less than £100 uk. The woodwork is pretty resonant and it sounds great acoustically but the pickups were rubbish and the electrics a bit pants to say the least. I installed a pair of 1990's Schaller humbuckers and some CTS pots and lemon drop caps (surplus bits from an upgrade job). It now kicks butt. I can't see me needing a "real" one. That 335 sounds really, really nice with your style of playing. Methinks it is time for you to reach out to a few companies/ builders to see what you can blag from them...

I am truly curious, you said this was the one you always wanted however, it’s borrowed, but I would like to ask an honest question I have seen you with a variety of semihollow as I have tried a variety myself throughout the years always impressed with your demos, so I want some real feedback, honest feedback, and I think that you based on every video I’ve ever watched, are certainly if nothing else as honest as you can be, without ever being negative Does this guitar have tuning stability? Is it better than the Yamaha essay 2200 is it better than the Eastman T 59 and I guess of course we know the heritage is the other option. I am truly not concerned with headstocks at all the design of the Gibson headstock, I don’t particularly care for that much so that’s not a sticking point for me, I do like the tea type pick ups. I think they are genuinely a very versatile pick up for this particular type guitar and certainly any of these guitars I use I would be ordering throwback Tops or lust for tone Lucille replacement pick ups on any of them even the Eastman, T486 and 484, which is the smaller body But yet they’re still including an SD 59 energize and the neck again knowing I would replace these as far as most solid construction best value for money but still best quality Gibson is known for a problem in the satin 335s. I have one it is terrible at tuning. It is a 2019 model great condition better than great because I don’t play it that frequently And I truly hate it not because it doesn’t sound good, but having to re-tune, strings, three and four, all the time is just a nightmare, especially in a jazz or blues gig. It’s not much when I’m jamming but certainly I wish there was an auto corrector for that tuning problem. I am going to be trading it and certainly because of its condition I’ll take a bath on it but I’ll still get a pretty good trade-in value and I wanted to know if I trade it in would you trade it for the Yamaha, the Eastman, which is obviously quite a bit less expensive although you can find used Yamaha at a great price or the true historical standard, where it all started which should be the heritage. I have also tried it. It comes with the same pick ups as the Eastman and otherwise, looking for the feedback man I’ve bought a lot of guitars, solid bodies I’m great with I’ve gotten rid of all of my Gibson and used Eastman replacements for the solid bodies and it has worked out fantastic people ask me about the headstock, but I truly don’t care the heritage headstock is different on my H1 50s as well but I find that they are both equally fantastic guitars Thanks for any honest feedback you can give me truly because I want to spend my money in the right place this time and not keep chasing something I get so frustrated with equipment man it’s not like I’m rolling in the money but every guitar I have has cost a great deal well over 1500 to 2 grand and I’m gonna put that kind of money and I’m I’m gonna take excellent care of them and share them and make sure that I’m getting what I pay for and I just wanna do that with the semi hollow as I have two hanging on the wall that I am semi disappointed in both our Gibsons thanks again Also, are you familiar with the 347 Gibson put out years ago and also what do you think of the semi Hollow guitars put out by Taylor mostly using this for jazz and blues. A little classic rock. Lots of jazz. Thanks. 2:58 3:02

Looks like you can’t buy one of these for less than AUS$5000. For that price, it had better be damn good.

Collings, Heritage, and to an extent Ibanez embarrassed Gibson's new management into taking the 335 back to its roots. Pre 2015-16 335's were always hit or miss (between 1965 and 1985 more than most). The new Classic 57 pickups are very good but the T-Types are surprisingly adept at broadening the 335's impact. When Murphy Lab and Gibson management focused on 1958-1963 with modern tweaks, i perked up and started looking for a replacement for a demolished 1963 335 of mine. I settled last year for a new 335 VOS burst and it didn't disappoint. With 335's, if you find one that talks to you, buy it. There's a reason it's been THE most versatile guitar in history, with only the Telecaster in close competition.

Yamaha do a nice centre block semi hollow too mate... If l cd have my pick it'd be a Collings.... then all you need is a well sorted point to point amp!!
@GCKelloch
@GCKelloch 6 месяцев назад
@@baabaabaa-yp2jh Not sure if it's still the case, but Yamaha SH guitars have a full Maple-ply top/back, while the Gibson ply is typically a Maple/Poplar sandwich, which does actually soften the highs a bit. You know a PCB amp can sound just as good, yet be more consistent than a P to P wired amp? Moving one wire inside a P to P amp can alter the sound, which might happen if it takes a fall or something. PCB's are static and can have intentional signal path proximity effects designed in. Of course, PCB repairs can be difficult to impossible.

@@GCKelloch Yeah mate, l dunno the makeup of the ply of the Yammys.. but they're crackin guitars... and pretty consistent. I've played a few 335s, 355s etc they vary (Yamaha & Epiphone do too).. but gd Dots are excellent guitars..l can only afford an Epiphone, but it's a gdun. As for PCB vs P2P.. you jinxed me mate!! Just went to plug in my Supro (PCB) and nuthin!! Oh a bit of a hiss, so lve got some work to do!! My little EL84 handmade thingo is still annoying the neighbours (l probably just mokkered mself?).. I agree, a GOOD PCB works fine... just if you have to go trouble shooting p2p is easier to muck around with. As for plywood, do you rekn you hear much difference at 110db+..l can't... but my hearing isn't terrific! Have a great Xmas mate.👍

@@baabaabaa-yp2jh Sorry about the Supro. Hope it's something simple. Maybe the input jack? I've heard tube rec's can be delicate, if it has one. Of course, a notch down on the tone knob of an all-maple-ply guitar might do the trick. At 110dB+ ear ringing might mask any difference anyway.

@@GCKelloch Yeah mate, at that volume lm of the opinion the amp, pickups etc have more effect on tone...but hollows and semi hollowbodys do have their own sound. The Supro? I've no idea mate... she was running fine the other day. I checked inputs and swapped cables, guitars.. nope!! Im hoping it's a loose valve...it's a bastard to get into, so I'll pull the back off and check if any pre or power valves have come loose with vibration (that's what l want the trouble to be!!)...ran out of warranty about 6 months ago.. typical!! Hahahaha! I wasn't born lucky mate, that's for sure!

It does sound bright, perhaps too bright for me.
@intheblues

You can turn the amp treble down to solve that. What you can't do is make bad pickups sound good/bright. :)

@@inthebluesUse a 1 Meg volume pot on the neck pickup and cap appropriately. It will wake up either the 57 classic or the T-Type.

Oh H… yes! Ya’ all will never get that tone from anything else. Yea, that’s comparing apples to mangos, but…Gibson did it right nearly eighty years ago when they rolled out the best jazz, country and incontrovertibly the best blues tool of all time!!! Expensive? Yea, true that. But so are examples from Stradivarius….

You probably know the 335 name came from its original price of $335. Adjusted for inflation, they're still the same price. In an era of $5000 Custom Shop Telecasters, the 335 is an absolute bargain at $3500.

@@jimshorts6751 I paid the prince sum of $150.00 for my Cherry 335 back in the late 70’s. That was a month’s wages to a starving student. Paid the same for my 1959 Cadillac convertible. White on white leather with three two-barrel carbs and an engine bay you could use as a condo with that monstrous motor removed. Kinder and gentler times, my friend…
