What comes to mind when you hear the words "Italian motorcycle"? Ducati? Moto Guzzi? What about Gilera, Benelli, or Laverda? Italy has a rich motorcycle history and has been producing unique and beautiful bikes for years, but here in the United States many people aren't familiar with Italian brands outside of Ducati and Moto Guzzi-many are not even familiar with the smaller single-cylinder offerings of these two brands.
Southern California's Hugo Gallina, owner of Vintage Italian Restoration, has been building and restoring Italian bikes out of his garage for years. Specializing in single-cylinder motorcycles, Hugo works on bikes that aren't a common sight in the U.S. For instance, the Gilera his father had back in the '50s and others like Aermacchi, Bianchi, and Maserati. These bikes may be small, but they make up for their size with their styling and nimbleness, and they generate an incredible amount of interest from those around him while out riding.
With a small community dedicated to racing small vintage Italian motorcycles, Hugo, along with his friends and clients, regularly participates in rallies such as the Giro D'California and other timed motorcycle races.

I'm the new owner of that beautiful Ducati in the video. In addition, I own a replica Milano Taranto as well. Both tuned by Hugo. Gracias, amigo.

I worked as an aprentice mechanic in a Gilera shop in Argentina in the late 70's, my "personal" ride was a Gilera 150cc from the 60's, ( El Huevo) we installed an oil cooler from a Citroen 2CV and I could run flat out at 110 km/h for about 30 seconds... I wish I have it now... Cheers !

That's something special. I really love that kind of motorcycle. I got a Piaggio Vespa 50Special, and now I'm looking for a Gilera Giubileo or a 150 Sport. I really like to restore all parts of those beautiful pieces of art. Thank you very much for all those videos. Grazie mille davvero. Un saluto dall' Italia.

If only the Gilera 300cc (approx) of the 1950's were around today, I would do what I could to own one. As a boy born in 1947 I had the honour to ride Eric Williams Gilera in Elizabeth South Australia during the late 50's. I dealy wanted and loved that motorcycle but Eric didnt want to sell it. I have no idea where it ended up but it was a magnificent motorcycle beautifully kept and maintained. I know that Gilera will stick in my mind forever and I am 74 today.

This jazz is spectacular! Would it be possible to list the music credit in the notes or at least... tell me who this jazz is?

Yes more vintage motorcycles!!! Thank you! And what a great episode. That rally/race sounds extremely fun. I ride a modern V7 Guzzi, but it's done to look old. I have to say, 9 out of 10 people, young or old that have come up to me about my bike have no idea what a Moto Guzzi is. I'd say the only major Italian brand that is known in North America is Ducati. The brand that people may know next is Aprilia. Anything else, MV, Laverda, Guzzi, Benelli, Bianchi, etc. most people have never heard of. I never heard of Gilera, but boy that is a sexy bike.

It’s sad to see what Gilera has become now compared to the machines they produced when they were an independent manufacturer. It reminds me of Lancia’s car making glorious past opposed to their current horrendous decay.

I remember a bunch of these non running Italian cycles thrown in the dumpster at my local cycle shop. They were seen as cheap junk; kind of like the China moped/scooter proliferation of today. I mean who is going to restore a China moped? China mopeds get thrown in the dumpster when worn out.

There's a rich vintage automotive culture in Japan that really goes against the grain. In a country where everyone's car is less than 5 years old (new) and rust is rarely an issue. The used car market is dwarfed by that I experienced in the US (and other western countries, I'm sure). So, the people that are into this kind of thing are hard core. Don't get me wrong; there are the 'all-show, no-go' folks, too. I'm part of an automotive community where people post pictures/updates about oil changes and OEM+ cup holder installations. lol
