The great German poet, Goethe, was so inspired by this tree, he wrote a poem about it, simply entitled Ginkgo Biloba.. One of his best. And the ginkgo biloba tree so inspired me, mainly its incredible health benefits that I made a film about, available on my channel. The ginkgo tree was the only living thing that survived the blast of Hiroshima, in tact!! Not even a leaf off. Scientists were mindblown when they discovered this
Thank you for the information. I harvested, for the first time last year, gingko nuts. I forage for food every year, free food for the taking and selling at farmers markets. Fantastic indeed. I forage for mulberries, blackberries, walnuts, acorns, june berries, thimbleberries and huckleberries. I live in Eastern Washington state close to the Blue Mountains where there is an abundance of super food, not many people take advantage of. This is food worth foraging for. I consider this fast food.
Actually, they were probably intended to be eaten by scavenging meat-eating dinosaurs. The irritating urushiol in the skin (same as poison ivy) probably caused them to be passed through quickly and deposited with a good bit of fertilizer.
They are so unique, that gynkos are their own (remainig) division within plant relm. The 'fruit' is not a fruit, as it does not develop from a flower. It is thus a seed. Having flowers is a rather modern charateristic in superior plants. Gynko is so ancient and fun. It has 'pine cone' like structures, the strobilus - present in more primitive types of plants such as ferns, that carry the pollen. The microspores (polen) form the male gamets that are multiflagelate (they are so pretty and unlike any other gamet in plantae). The litte swimmers travel within the female's ovaries (that are shaped like two circlar shapes mounted on top of a stalk) to fertilizes the ovule inside of it. The resulting cygote develops in a seed that has a soft outer layer - palatable to animal, like this cool mysterious onmivore. The seeds are enlarged developed ovaries that present themselves as two little balls mounted on a stalk. So pretty.
I am not sure flowering plants are "superior". Evolution is about fitting organisms to their environment, not about some sore of hierarchy. That the Ginkgo has survived so long as a species demonstrates it is not at all an inferior plant. Also, do not forget that the largest and oldest trees in the world are all conifers, not flowering trees.
You said the Ginkgo has a 56 million years old lineage. However Kew Gardens puts it older. I believe Kew is correct. "It's so ancient, the species is known as a 'living fossil'. Fossils of Ginkgo leaves have been discovered that date back more than 200 million years."
Most, if not all Cantonese (Southern Chinese) make this tasty congee called Gingko nuts rice congee. It's quite tasty and refreshing. Many Gingko trees are on the streets of New York City, at a certain time of the years the elderly Chinese ladies would hunt Gingko trees around their neighborhood, particularly in Brooklyn. for Ginkgo nuts, then sell them on the street of Chinatown. I am planning to buy some of the Gingko nuts from the women sometime this week when I am in Chinatown, to make the Gingko nut congee. ;)
I read somewhere, that inhaling vapors from Gingko leaves in boiling water, is very good for lung problems. I love this tree. I'm going to grow a Chichi bonsai, but want to grow it in a flame style, with lots of shoots coming out of the bottom. Somehow that is stimulated on older (20?25?) year old trees, to produce a flame of branches that grow up, all around the central trunk. Perhaps when the chichis form, they easily form buds. ITs hard to find info on this.
Predrag Milovanović anything from 5 to 10 years . If you plant your trees with a drip feed irregation to ensure there correct water intake this time is dramatically reduced .
never ever ever never believe medical studies I take this stuff all the time and I handed out at work everybody loves it and it's extremely helpful for memory and brain function they don't make money on healthy people the medical profession fights everything that works
Terpenoids and flavonoids are active components in Ginkgo biloba extract have antioxidant qualities, antiasthmatic effects (helping to relieve bronchospasm), skin regenerative and wound-healing properties.Ginkgobiloba extract has also been shown in trials to increase blood circulation, reduce clot formation, strengthen the walls of capillaries
Amber M you may do that yes , also put the leaves in the coffee purculator or coffee machine in order to infuse the coffee . I find the fresh leaves are best ,but you may dry them for when the tree has no leaves in winter . Caution though ,the ginkgo biloba tea is very strong and a detox ,so it may give you a head ache if you make it too strong . I use three fresh leaves or if dried six per pot of pure ginkgo biloba tea 😊 hope this helps . Ps ,for winter times I always freeze the fresh leaves ,cut up three leaves , an make ice cubes . Once defrosted the leaves are as if from the tree and makes for a fresh cup in winter times .
There’s a gingko tree in my neighbourhood, every year I admire it, because it’s the last one still glowing in November. I might ask for permission to get a cutting. Am I right in thinking that it’s illegal for the female tree to be planted due to the rotting vomit smell.
I've gathered some Ginkgo seeds and plan to do a bit of "drive by" plantings this spring, the ginkgo is truly a unique and beautiful tree. Oh, and bonsai is pronounced bone-sigh, not BON-sigh.

So the theory of mutation is all wrong?? Does evolution requires mutation? Why hasn't been there any mutation in gingko? Or have all the mutations of gingko turned out to be failures??
Ginkgo's don't need to continue evolving because they have outlived their predators, have crystals of insecticide within their wood and are amazingly adaptable to all sorts of harsh conditions which is why it is such a widely planted street tree in cities. I would say that gingkos have been a huge success having survived this long.

False statement in the first 15 seconds... Although they are living fossils as in that they look similar, they have changed a lot genetically over that time
