Here's the original commercial offer ad (or possibly with tiny changes to the ending voiceover) for Ginsu knives.
Followed by the Ginsu II and a million parodies.
Voiceover by ??
"Now how much would you pay?"
This aired on local Chicago TV on Friday, February 8th 1980. [ (C) 1978 Dial Media, Inc. ]
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the
preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s
and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels;
footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved
digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we
preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs
with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical
purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or
lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 3,700+ (and
counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please

A few points of trivia: Ginsu knives were invented and manufactured in Fremont, Ohio. The "chef" in the spot is a Japanese exchange student from a local high school. The other hands are those of the actual salesmen who had the account. (They couldn't get an advertising agency to take the campaign.) Most of the now-classic county fair-style come-ons in the ad -- "Now how much would you pay?"; "But wait, there's more!" -- entered the infomercial world here. (All points courtesy of Terry O'Reilly and his CBC Radio show "Under the Influence".)

I've been using my Ginsu steak knives for years. They still make them! The only problem I've had with them in the past is that the (cheap) plastic handles would sometimes snap off, leaving you with a really sharp prison shiv! lol The newest version of the knives, though, have sturdier handles that are bolted onto the knives much better. I've bought them through e-bay.

I was in sixth grade, home from school with chicken pox. This commercial came on and I called up and ordered them, COD, Cash on Delivery. I never told my single, struggling to pay the bills Mom, and six weeks later the doorbell rings. She was furious. Still, we got a lot of use out of these. My friend Bobby and I would joke about the "ten-in-one kitchen utensil". Yeah it does ten things - it peels potatoes, carrots, apples...It can also cut them. Ten-in-one was a stretch. We still had the steak knife set and the Ginsu for about a decade though. :-)
