The Girl in the Hole .. | The Disturbing Case of Lori Poland
On a warm afternoon in August 1983, Richard Poland goes inside his home to get popsicles for his 3 year old daughter, but as he watches her from the window, a car suddenly stops in front of the home and Lori is snatched off their yard. As the cops desperately try to track the ‘candyman’ who took Lori away, the neighbourhood kids join the investigation, and the little girl herself struggles to survive 10 feet underground, trapped in a cesspool far away.

It was horrible and “unspeakable” things happened to us. We made it out. However, 2 of my sibs are dead now. Due to the torture we endured at the hands of our egg donor. I kind of get it, too, because children can get on YT and possibly see/hear things they shouldn't (and let's not get into the parents keeping tabs on what kids watch, because we all know there are a lot of shit parents out there being far more neglectful than that), but at the same time it sucks that videos that I want to watch are having to do this. Agreed. For repeat offenders or those who did something so heinous there should never be an option for parole. It should be life or death. There are so many cases of people like this that get out only to reoffend 10+ more times. Then the justice system says "how could we have known?" They ignore the studies that sexual deviants never get better. They would need to demonstrate empathy to others. I was abused as a child but never once thought about doing the same to any child or anyone else. It's a sad world we live in where people who hurt children and the vulnerable get out for good behavior yet people who kill their abusers get life without parole.

I’m confused by “Justice doesn’t help sufferers and is more for the witnesses than the victims?” What kind of shlt take is that? Justice is about punishing wrongdoers and keeping others safe from future attacks from the offender. Its odd even the victim she says it’s not about justice and is more concerned with understanding the perpetrator, that’s such a weird stance. Most victims and their families want justice for closure and to know the perpetrator can’t harm them or someone else. I think the fact she never actually got it messed with her perception and she convinced herself it wouldn’t have helped her in order to deal with the fact she didn’t get it. I don’t even see what there is to “understand” about the perpetrators that could bring peace? Other than what they did wasn’t your fault and that person is garbage. There is nothing to understand, sick people are sick people.

This is one of the worst cases I've ever heard. There were so many moments when my heart and stomach dropped- only to hear a miracle come out of it, followed by another and another...The witnesses that were able to provide descriptions...first, half of the license plate, then, a grandmother provides the whole plate # thanks to her instincts a week prior. All hope seemed to fail upon finding out the sicko had driven 20 miles into deserted mountains, DROPPING this baby into an abandoned out house HOLE to slowly die in isolation, only to be found alive 4 days later by BIRDWATCHERS who needed a bathroom break on their way back down the mountain! I'd be so traumatized if I'd found a child like that- with sepsis over most her body. Yet again, Lori not only survives but THRIVES! She is my hero. She faced something so dark...its unfathomable. I firmly believe suffering - if you decide to use the bottom of that deep, dark pit to then kick off of, you will rise like you never knew possible. The cuts let the bad out so the light can shine in. Some never make it, but those who do grow strong and tall. This standing back up after the fall is what it's all about. Lori has done this more eloquently than anyone. The peace, strength, wisdom, love and light she has obtained from this battle is truly miraculous and its radiating from her. None of us have an excuse after hearing her story. Find the silver lining when you are lost in a sea of darkness. Focus on that light and love, embrace it, become one with it (again), and go forth to be a beacon of light for the others still stumbling in the darkness. Thank you for your light, Lori.

I can't believe the mother was so ignorant to his behavior throughout the years. I also can't believe the police didn't look into the tip a month ago with the license plate given to them. This all could have been avoided if the red flags were followed through.

And this is the difference between a cold case for 60 years and a solved case early. Lots of strangers and neighbours being perceptive and able to remember details of unusual goings on in their neighbourhood and working together to quickly obtain the evidence needed before it is lost. In that group its always extremely important to have investigators/detectives/police officers willing to take their job seriously, listen to the public and act on information. Something that rarely happens

Your brain treats trauma one way or another at a young age, either you completely shut off, disassociate and then bury it in your subconscious, or due to physical pain, close proximity to your abuser, etc. You are constantly reminded of it and it never gets to your subsconcious. Either way, those memories are stored forever, trauma just doesn't go away. Even infants can experience PTSD and have memories and flashbacks about trauma, and they will react differently to infants who have not experienced any. For example, studies have shown a baby who suffers neglect will learn not to cry for attention, because they remember that their cries were never listened to. They absolutely have memories.

I was abused from the time I was 6 months old (1971) by my dad. At 3 years of age he poured hot coffee down my backside causing a 3rd degree burn. I still have that scar to this very day. When I was 6 years old (1977), hed shaken me so hard that for 2 hours I couldn't even hold my head up from the "looking up" position. Every time I tried my head would hurt so bad I could barely open my eyes. I don't remember what it was I'd done to make him so mad that he'd do that. When I was in 1st grade the 1st time I was also abused by my 1st grade teacher which was the result of having to repeat my 1st grade year over, but I was with a different teacher in a second 1st grade class. I remember coming home and taking my little Beagle, Misty, out into the woods with me for a walk as I always did. We'd had severe thunderstorm warnings heading our way. Dad found Misty and I in the woods and swatted me with a whistle strap from where he'd found us clear to the house 100 yards away. I had marks from my lower back to my ankles. I went to school the next day only able to wear a sundress. I hurt so bad I couldn't even set down. The school called CPS. He told them we were in for a severe thunderstorm and that he'd warned me that if he caught me he'd whip me so hard I wouldn't set down for a week. They dropped the case. And I couldn't set down for a week. His shaking me not long before that as hard as he did caused ne a life time of problems with my memory in comprehension and shirt term memory. By the time I was 5 years old my math skills were advanced. I could add, subtract, multiply, divide and do fractions. Ever since the shaking, my memory with basic math I can no longer do any of it by memory, I either have to write it down to work it out or use a calculator. I can remember important dates, years, even events, but that's it. If one thing was out of place and not where it belonged after I was playing with any toy, reading a book, or coloring in my coloring books I'd get the belt. When I'd gotten shaken, Shaken Baby Syndrome wasn't even an abusive concept until the 1980s. I was diagnosed with SBS when I was in the 3rd grade. Because of that I was placed in Learning Disability classes from my 3rd grade year clear up to my graduating year in 1991. I would have graduated in 1990 but I was 1 credit short so I went back and earned that high school diploma. I may have grown up as an abused child (physically, mentally, emotionally and psychologically. Never sexually) I had one miscarriage (my only son) but 4 daughters in 1993, 1995, 1998 & 2000. I made it my choice to never do to any of my daughters what was done to me most all of my life. They may have a mentally messed up mom but they are happy, independent, loving, outspoken, respectful and well mannered young women. They will tell you what they think, give their opinion and straight up be straight forward with you. I can say I raised them right.

Victims of abuse need care and no one's ever said they shouldn't, but when these victims have already thrown out all empathy and made more victims, I personally believe "serving justice" is all you can do at that point. With only 6 years of jail time for a man who made it his hobby to look up children with vile offers, justice was not served and you have the right to be pissed. Allow yourself to be pissed, there's no shame in it.
