I know this is 7 months late, but some gladiators actually would’ve been very familiar with boats. A “Naumachia” was an event where gladiators would fight naval battles, with the first - run by Julius Caesar - being in the Colosseum, which had been intentionally flooded using the river Tiber.

I swear that last battle was straight out of a movie. His comrades dead, the lone warrior is healed miraculously and comes back to avenge them by whomping the Minotaur in the snout. Amazing!

Probably another reason that there aren’t bows in the arena is because gladiatorial combat wasn’t usually to the death. Gladiators were expensive and killing them would mean nobody would be able to afford them. There were referees and the main goal was to subdue the opponent. Gladiators were also like celebrities and endorsed produce, I’m not kidding.

Actually there were “gladiator” archers, but they didn’t fight people, they killed animals for entertainment. So the archers could fit in, if they were dressed different, the dragon and ice giant could be animals.
