Personally, my experience is that he didn't get very good until around the time of in rainbows. For me it's hard to listen to his earlier live backing vocals because he was really still learning to sing when he first started. Most singers start that way, but I must say I don't enjoy listening to it. Usually I appreciate his vocals now but I do struggle when he does the backing vocals for the tourist and never, ever sings the delayed rhythm on the "see sparks" lyric that Thom does on the album.. on the album it's so gorgeous but Ed always sings the rhythm in unison and it drives me nuts lol
I don't know how else to describe it, but this live arrangement of the Gloaming reminds me of how there are a lot of pretty cool stripped-down, minimalist songs on Talking Heads' Speaking in Tongues, but the live versions used in Stop Making Sense just hit differently in an awesome way.
This song is really amazing and makes me feel like flying and falling in a sea of sand where life is fast and soft, like a sweet wave taking me apart from the pain and bad things of this world.

It’s impossible for me to listen to the album and feel the same.. which says a lot about how well these guys did on this live performance. Thom Yorke and the rest are brilliant
