I first heard this tune "Samhradh Samhradh" many years ago late one night on a Norwegian radio station. I believe that it must have been in 1975 But it was a different instrumental recording by an Irish group that got "chief" or something in the name. I managed to record this instrumental together with a few other melodies in the same vein on a cassette tape. I was 19 years old at the time - and the following year I found myself living together with some few friends in a community far from people and far north in the country - closer to the polar circle. Every new day when we woke up - the first thing we did was to listen to these melodies as we were still laying in our beds - and let the Irish magic of these haunting songs sink in before our day began. We called it our "Shangri-la" music as it did set us in an extremely good mood for the rest of the day. It took me years to find out what kind of group that was playing and what kind of recording it was. While listening to some of Mike Oldfield's earliest recordings I heard this same haunting instrument again - and I learned that it was called "Uilleann Pipes." And I learned that it was an Irish man called Paddy Molony that was playing them - and that's how I got track of the wonderful music of "The Chieftains." I found that the music I recorded was taken from their "Chieftains 5" album - which of coarse is one of the hardest to find. It's always like that - the very best music is always well hidden. (It's now on Spotify). I now have got it on LP and CD - as with most of their other recorded music. It was sad to hear that Paddy Molony died just a few months ago. He came across as being such a nice and lovable, humble Irish man. Our "Shangri-la" music was : "Samhradh, Samhradh" - "Ceol Bhriotanach" (Breton Music)" - "An Ghe agus Gra Geal" - "Tabhair dom do Lamh (Give Me Your Hand)." (But that we didn't know then. To us it was simply music from heaven). Me and my girlfriend managed to take a trip to the southern part of Ireland in 1983. We were roaming around for 4 weeks and we did not experience one drop of rain for the whole stay. People said it was the best summer in 6 years. I know I will return to the emerald island and visit the lovely people there one more time before I die.

This song has made me feel the greatest shame imaginable, being Irish and understanding less than 10% of the lyrics and yet, feeling it touch my soul at first hearing. I shall now embark on learning my native language at all costs if for nothing else than to experience its beauty in its purest form. 🙏🇮🇪

i'm french and I just felt in love with the gaelic language... and I will learn it, I don't to let the gaelic die... I want to learn it, speak it, sing it, write some philosophical article about gaelic texts (with the original text) and transmit it, transmit the passion of this language. And the only irish thing I have is my first name, but I don't know I'm passioned of Ireland and my dream is to go there.

This would capture the gist: Summer, summer, milk from the calves, We brought the summer with us, Yellow summer of clear bright daisies, We brought the summer with us. We brought it in from the leafy woods, We have brought the Summer with us, Yellow Summer from the time of the sunset, We have brought the Summer with us. Mayday doll, maiden of Summer, Up every hill and down every glen, Beautiful girls, radiant and shining, We have brought the Summer with us. Holly and hazel and elder and rowan, We brought the summer with us, And bright ash-tree at the mouth of the Ford, We brought the summer with us. Summer, summer, milk from the calves, We brought the summer with us, Yellow summer of clear bright daisies, We brought the summer with us. Mayday doll, maiden of Summer, Up every hill and down every glen, Beautiful girls, radiant and shining, We have brought the Summer with us. Summer, summer, Summer, summer, And who'd take it from us? Summer, summer, And who'd take it from us? And who'd take it from us? From the time of the sunset…

Agree!!! He is an absolutely beautiful singer... touches something deep in the Irish soul. He sings Casadh an Tsugain in the middle of the movie, "Brooklyn." Not a dry eye in the theatre the day I first saw that movie! Check it out! Also, learn Irish while in lockdown. Duolingo is a good place to start. You can appreciate even more what he is singing about when you can understand what he is saying. English translation is good, but Irish is even that much better.
