Don’t forget Torres won the corner that drogba scored from he was definitely underrated at Chelsea not to mention the next season he scored 23 goals in all comps and had a few number of assists and was the starter helping us win the Europa league
In my memory, Torres was an amazing player at Chelsea. He had great link ups, was hardworking in the defensive phase and was only unsuccessful at scoring. He did pretty much everything else tbh
I grew up idolizing this man. When I was little, I would style my hair like him and idolize the entire spanish football team as a result. I recently found the old Torres 2010 WC jersey I wore during those days, and it inspired me to buy a signed one for my room, as it reminds me why I fell in love with the beautiful game.
If the game just ended 2-2 with Chelsea going thru with away goals, it wouldn’t have felt like as good of a revenge, Barca would’ve still held onto hope until the game ended. That goal crushed Barca’s hopes, and that’s why it was so important and memorable
This is exactly everything that goal stood for. Whether they choose to believe it or not, this match was fueled with the memories of '09, with that in mind, it meant a lot to see the wrong of '09 be finally right to most of the footballing world.
WATCH THAT MATCH AGAIN. That goal was important because Barca was BOMBARDING Chelsea with 1 player down for more than half of game. That clearance which leads to Torres goal did: 1) Redeem his transfer fee.... forever. 2) KILLED Barca spirit to continue their attack. Yes, They will advance with that away goal... but as you saw a lot of times in football, Never say never, One goal may came anyway and anytime - luckily it was for Chelsea at the right time to killed off Barca's hope to dust.
@@MBison-vm6gq that goal brought Torres back. In fact, Chelsea ended up winning the Europa League with him as the main striker, so that 50 mil was justified anyway.
@@jivvrLOLOLOLOLOLOL a hand ball penalty against FCB in their last CL meeting wasn’t called. It was justice for sure. I can’t stand either of those teams either.
Were you lads watching live? I remember it, they definitely needed it. As a neutral the tension was through the roof, no one believed they were safe until that goal went in. That barca team was dangerous. 😭
Let's not forget he also scored next year in the Europa League final won by Chelsea, got the corner from which Drogba scored in the UCL final, had 11 goals and 15 assists in the UCL winning season and 23 goals 8 assists in the next season. He wasn't a flop, it's just media creating expectations for him to be the best player in the world.
As a 90's kid and LFC fan, Torres was probably my favourite football player in my late teens. There was nothing new in this video for me, but it made me relive it again. Well structured and great storytelling. Good job Matt. For being as young as you are, and with the disability of being American (I assume), you exhibit substantial football knowledge.
No no no. Chelsea NEEDED that goal. Remember this Barcelona team was THE greatest team ever. And they were playing like lions against Chelsea. Chances were that it could have gone Barcelona's way (another goal instead of a tie) but Torres's goal sealed the deal.
love this, but (and myb ive been msiinformed) i was surprised u didnt mention that he went and played at the world cup ignoring the advice of his doctors, making his alr bad injury worse, basically sacrificing his career for the world cup trophy. he ended up getting redemption but yea important detail
You are right! I didn't highlight it as much in the video other than a quick mention, but it seems very likely that rushing back from injury to play in the 2010 World Cup made things a lot worse and led to the run of bad form post-2010 World Cup.
That goal @14:35 by Drogba was unreal. He is pushed pretty strongly in the back but he re-adjusts his turn, to use that momentum and send an even more powerful header... I didnt appreciate him when he was playing, because Im a Liverpool fan and her made us and the rest of the Pl miserable, but what a player he was. One of the best PL strikers.
This is the match i remember has being the 1st football game to give me goosebumbs. Im french and born in 2001. I lived the 2006 world cup final where we loosed to Italia. I remember hardly the game but the outcome made me cry myself to sleep in that summer night of 2006. But this game. I remember every detail. The amount of pressure Barcelona put on Chelsea the final goal of Torres. The way he celebrated over Valdes. This feels so far away now. 2010s football will be missed for sure. I feel like i dont enjoy the game has much i used to. It might only be me.
I watched this match live at 2am in the philippines. I was screaming " HOW IS HE THAT ONSIDE??? " low and behold after Neville was losing his voice I was also screaming for happiness because THAT 2012 Barcelona team was going to the win the Champions League that year. ( Madrid fan )
Of all the natural strikers of that era he was my favorite, no matter what club he played for. So I got to watch this match at my friend’s house. What a moment.
I used to watch that cartoon in Spain. My granny used to live there and never ever knew what it was called but this was in the 80s Fernando wasn’t born when I was watching it. They must’ve showed it for years after
Liverpool Torres was legendary. I was so happy for him when he scored this goal for Chelsea because man oh man, that rough patch that he had was an understatement
Really enjoyed this. Very well made video with a well researched backstory and expertly edited flashbacks as his chance against Barca came up. The only significant thing you missed is the delicious irony of how Torres got into that advanced scoring position was by recklessly losing ball via a poor dribble out….
That move on the Manchester keeper where Fenando missed the target, was so damn smooth though, if he did finish, it would have been one of the prettiest breakaway goals of all time.
If your club has never won the Champions League, You will never understand the feeling until your club actually does it. That same feeling i also had in 2021. That goal against the best Barca team (current ucl winners at the time), A Messi machine of 91 goals that calendar year.. & we, We Chelsea stopped them. That Torres goal, as a neutral fan you will never understand. The pain goes back to 04 losing semis to Monaco, 05 Ghost goal denied us, 07,.Liverpool again, 08 Man Utd in the final, 09 Barca the referee shenanigans, 11 Man uts again.. & finally, the weakest ever Chelsea team, finishing 6th in the league, managed to battle it. If football was ever a game about team spirit, belief & underdogs, it was those 2 games, Barca & Bayern. Also, remember, against Barca Chelsea played majority of the match with 10 men! Making it even harder.
Can I ever for get the match especially with this dramatic goal? NO! And that goal was as important as the Ramirez goal cos that Barcelona team could surprise everyone with another late goal as it happened in 2009 if not for the Torres goal Back then I had over 10 Chelsea jersey but I discarded them all later but kept only that Torres Jersey. Not that I'm a big fan of Torres but that of that memorable moment he created against that mighty Barcelona side in that year 2012
I loved Torres at Chelsea, he didnt score many goals but he worked his socks off for the team. Shevchenko was the same, not prolific but a real team player and high workrate.
To me the goal by Ramires is the all time best goal ever scored. The absolute coolness in chipping Valdez like that is still giving me the chills after all these years. I'm not even a Chelsea fan but there's something in that goal that moves me. The pressure Chelsea were under facing the reigning champion and the best team in the world at the time with an interim manager and to pull that upset off. What a story!
Great video! Keep it up with the great editing and writing, very few channels about football come close to being this deep and touching, looking forward to another video like this.
I watched this game in the pub and the sentiment that time that this would be a one sided slaughter. Barcelona that time was a team truly feared with the peak of Tiki-taka. Like, their reputation and betting odds were sky high, Chelsea was seen as a formality. They really were the underdogs and the stats didn't lie but you had to watch the game and know the contest of that time to appreciate greatness unfold. Chelsea parked the train and then unleashed the greatest 1-2 counter. Cult heroes were made that day. Torres narrative was flipped from 50M bust to redemption & respect with that 1 goal, all woes and resent paid off, signed, sealed, & reciprocated.
He didn’t score in the final and never became a 25 goals-per-season kinda player for Chelsea after this but he did play his part both in the UCL final by earning the last minute corner that lead to Drogba’s equaliser and I believe he was their top scorer in the Europa League the following year and scored in the final with them winning that and becoming one of the only clubs ever to hold both the Europa League title and Champions League title at the same time.
He won em all in club level at chelsea, ucl uel epl, and won all on national level with spain. Xavi iniesta had it easy with barca, but to won em all at chelsea at the time was lit..
how does this video have under 800 views? This is easily on par with a multi-million view video. Keep up like this and ur going places man, great video!
It should be mentioned Torres absolutely dominated the Confed Cup just a year before the actual World Cup here in SA. That's part of why his fall of felt so abrupt.
I still remember the intensity of that game is so high like anything can happen, this is where the parking bus was created, Chelsea without a manager, Messi searching for that one goal against Chelsea and Petr Cech. I'm drunk 🍻
Side note: He also scored the only goal of the 2008 Euro Final that was to start the run of Spain winning that euro, the next, and the world cup in between.
I remember when I was younger me and my brothers collected Match Attaxx (which for those unaware is a trading card game). We were family friends with a convenience store owner, and he gave us each a free pack one day. My brother opened his, and saw him. Fernando Torres. 101/101, best card in the entire set. I still love Torres, I have a lot of good memories of his time at Liverpool
This video essay has a crazy high production quality. It's shocking how you only have 1.5k subs. You've earned yourself a new sub, and hopefully more to come.
Barca after that horrible game, against Chelsea in 2009, the way they denied Chelsea, aided by the refs, left a sour taste on the sport. There was a due, and it was paid
A whole documentary about a goal that had legitimately no direct impact on the result of that game. If he scored that goal or not Chelsea would've still gone through against Barcelona in that 2 leg match up.
He did good for the Spanish National Team,... Scoring the only goal in either the World Cup final. Or the European final... can't remember which, though...
Great video. Good variety of clips, very well written and narrated. But the shallow depth of field and the manually blurred out tree in the clips of yourself threw me off a bit. Anyway it's a pleasure to see a fresh channel doing sports content without unnecessary exaggeration and overexictement in every sentence!
It feels rather ironic that the team he won most trophies for in his career is probably the same team he played his best against. At least coming from a Chelsea fan I used to dread coming up against him when he was at Liverpool cos he 9 times out of 10 he performed well against us!
