Playing with a guitar pick or fingers has to do with sound and technique. My brother and I both play guitar, he prefers a pick and it's a crisper/cleaner sound. I use my fingers, it's more grungy. For the nails I cut my strumming hand nails sharp in a triangle shape, like a "vampires nails" would look like. Also you have to build calluses on your finger tips, kind of like if you lift weights and calluses build on your palms... or if your a boxer, on your knuckles.

Regarding the 'pic' question,firstly it's the individuals preference, secondly it has to do with the style being played-like Stevie here is picking to get each 'single' note to be a crisp,clean and powerful feel-& yes strumming across as many strings is utilized as well among other techniques... When it comes to 'not' using a flat-pic,the fingers give the freedom to 'pluck' many desired notes of the 'key-chord' that which is the 'rithym' of the progression which Essentially follows the 'bass' in measures...like the Bass guitars role but expanded.Stevie is playing the 'lead' notes throughout the scale's accessing the freedom of expression throughout the general progression of the song...in a nutshell😅💥🔥🤘🎵🎸🎶

Pick gives it a harder, clearer strike tone. Finger picking is a little softer, more nuanced. Most guitarists use picks but a lot of bassists go with just their fingers.

I've been learning on this guitar thing about 5 years now. I can tell you that it can be very rewarding and very frustrating at the same time. I'd suggest you take it up. That said, here's some free advice, based upon MY experience and opinion. Others probably gave ideas and that's great, again, "opinions": 1. Don't buy into gear snobbery. The "crap" gear of today is really amazing. Will a $4,500 Fender strat sound better than a $200 Squier? Sure, but it won't sound $4,300 better. 2. Slow is smooth, smooth is quick. Practice stuff at a slow speed to gain muscle memory. 3. Practice/play at least something every day. 4. Check pawn shops for gear and take a player with you if at all possible. They'll know what problems to watch out for that a person new to learning will miss.
