The Godfather 3 is unfortunately known as the “Fredo” of the Godfather trilogy, most of us try to avoid this film when rewatching the saga, Not really because the film itself is terrible, rather because it is compared to it predecessors which are 2 of the greatest films ever made in cinema history. And it's understandable, it has many negative aspects and problems that I’m sure you know about. But one thing that seems to be often overlooked, and not really addressed is that the storyline itself is brilliant. The execution however is a different story. But the main storyline is actually very interesting. But the problem is, that the other issues overshadow the main story, and dilute what could have been a brilliant film on par with the prequels. In fact, most people who watch the film are left confused and disgruntled not only because of the glaring issues the film has, but because the storyline seems vague and obscure. Which is unfortunate because it did have the potential to end the saga as brilliantly as it had started.
So after multiple requests, we are finally going to breakdown The Godfather 3. Let's see if by analysing the story, unraveling the different plots and clarifying different aspects of the film, can change our opinion, and atlas appreciate some of the positives it has.
The film has many faults, but after doing a lot of researching and rewatching the films, I can guarantee that in the next few videos covering this film, your opinion will somewhat shift.
So In this video we will breakdown the core of the entire story, and once we understand this the rest will make a lot more sense, and you’ll probably have a completely new perspective on the overall story.
International Immobiliare was a European real estate company. Its properties were worth over $6 billion by the 1970's, making it the largest landowner in the world. The Vatican owned a 25 percent interest in the company.
Michael had slowly become one of the biggest investors and owners of the company, however wanted to be the majority stake holder, to allow him almost complete control of this Billion Dollar conglomerate, So he needed the Vaticans 25%.
This is why when he was approached to help "Gilday", in recovering their $769 million deficit. He utilised this incident to what he saw as the final move that will absolve himself and the family from their criminal past, and finally give him the recognition and image he desperately wanted. This would be Michael's most ambitious and the most dangerous venture he had ever gone after. The risks were extremely high and the repercussions could be even higher, but if he succeeded the rewards would be astronomical. Let’s not forget, this is not a simple business deal to him, the amount he will be making would be unheard of within his world. The Corleone family would be one of the wealthiest families not just in America, but in the world. It is true generational wealth that will last long after Michael is gone.
Don Vito could only have dreamed of his family’s wealth to reach such heights.
But once again, and As we later find out, Michael was getting involved in something incredibly dangerous, that this time he would not be able to recover from.

3 things I like about Michael in this film is what he teaches Vincent like Vito would've 1. Never hate your enemies it clouds your judgment 2. Shut up, don't ever let anyone know what you're thinking 3. You have to respect Zaza for what he did it was a brilliant move it was the young pushing out the old.

I expected Michael to recover and outsmart his enemies, yes. After all his work to “get there” and return to who he originally was, and mopes are left to benefit? Ironically, it was Godfather 3 that got me into the Godfather series. I first watched this from a young age. Then when I looked Godfather 1 &2, I started disliking 3 a whole lot more. But taking a critical look at 3 will make me appreciate the film a bit more. I really wish Robert Duval played Tom Hagen in the this one. The lawyer Michael had was not as innovative and smart as Tom. Tom always did some digging and research. The lawyer Michael had was just a "mouth-piece". But looking into the plot of Immobiliare, it could have been better fleshed out and with Tom in the mix, it could have present Michael with a dilemma: when Tom does his research into the corporation, he could have found that it was controlled by the old rank and file mafia in Sicily and Tom advises not to go into it. Michael disagrees and not only tries to make the deal but to take it over. Hear, Tom is put in a difficult position of protecting Michael his brother or protect his Don in which he feels he can no longer do. At the end of the movie, it is Tom that gets shot while trying to protect Michael. This would either make Michael a cold Don or break him as his last brother is now dead. Well, it is just an idea. Anyways, great review, looking forward to more!!!

Only thing I found confusing and inconsistent in Part III was the complete change of character of Michael. Michael who had been a cold distant calculating ruthless man with an explosive anger, suddenly transformed into a charming funny easy going warm old man in the last movie. Yes old age mellows a person, but it would be nice to see this giant transformation of the central character of the overall story, especially since he became the darkest soulless cold scary psychopath by the end of the second movie. Just watch the end of Part 2, and then the opening of part 3 where old Michael socializing and making jokes at the party, and thy are like two different people. And how he flirts with Kay is really unbelievable; those two people hated each other so much at the end of senod movie, they would never come together, or remember the past with rose colour glasses. They could never ever forgive each other.

Immobiliare is basically a stand-in for the Italian company Società Generale Immobiliare. Michael's purchase of Immobiliare is basically a stand-in for the purchase of Società Generale Immobiliare by the American Company Gulf+Western around 1970. The irony is that the studio that financed the Godfather movies was owned by Gulf+Western. Gulf+Western was run by Charles Bluhdorn. What Charles Bluhdorn did with Società Generale Immobiliare was inflate the value of its real estate to cover up losses at his other companies. Società Generale Immobiliare was tied up in a whole bunch of banking scandals over many years both with the Vatican, the Europe and the United States. Where the godfather III goes wrong in terms of the real-world story is in making Michael into some kind of victim. The real-life michael (Charles Bluhdorn) was no victim in the deal. He was an arch crook. The real-world story that Godfather III is based on runs from the late 1960s to at least 1978.

I’m one of the few that actually enjoyed part 3 but it’s just misunderstood in most parts for a few different reasons, I guess the story could’ve been executed differently with a few parts changed that could’ve made it more enjoyable to a wider audience. One thing I always wanted to know that even with immobiliare which would’ve made Michael extremely wealthy due to real estate prices going up would he have also made money like a landlord and earn rents? Cause immobiliare was worth billions with all the real estate he had so I’m sure a good chunk of that was land with either living occupants and maybe even businesses paying rent for offices and land as well

Here's the thing. In the late 1970s/ early 1980s I became very interested in the recent history of the Vatican (anyone alive at the time couldn't escape the reportage of the financial scandals/ P2 / Assassination of Pope John Paul I). So, when I first watched The Godfather 3, I was completely aware of what was going on with the Vatican side of the plot. I didn't then, nor do I now relate to the criticism of the plotline, as I was au fait with the background that was used. Just to give you a parallel - I'm a Dubliner (Ireland). When the movie "The Commitments" was released in the United States, there were moves to subtitle this English language, Dublin accented movie. As a Dubliner, this seemed silly to me, because I would never need such subtitling. Similarly with Godfather 3. As someone familiar with the Vatican Scandals of the period in question, I didn't need any long exposition. Clearly many movie goers did...

In my opinion the 3rd film is the best because of the story, here's why; Michaels flashback during the song of his son, Michaels confessions to the priest, the death of his daughter (although the acting is't great on that scene, it completes the first movie where Vito swears on his grandchildren that he wouldn't hurt the other family bosses, but this scene proves he díd set it up). I like it too that they made the subjects bigger, like even the church is involved so it proves that power is corrupting even on the holy people. and last, the death scene of Michael, with that music, the house where he and Apolonia were back in the days and no one else to notice him dying but a dog (to great contrast of Vito)

Only thing sadder then a powerful old man looking for redemption in his winter years is a one who ait. The first at least you can see that there are still traces of humanity. Even tho it is probably a exercise in futility in Micheal case beacuse after decades of being up to his eye balls in the corsive elements of the stuff When it makes It's final call to a person like Michael It comes dressed up in all the dreadful ways it was wielded. Hence the reason he had different end to his father at that house where if things were different he would have being a different man. Still believe if his ex wife was not killed it would have ended naturally between them and on good terms beacuse his path was set for him already giving us a less destructive man he had the intelligence training and stamina to outmaneuver anything or anybody put in front of him in that world that he was born into but It would have being less bloody and ferocious. Italian's really do tell the tale of both sides of the coin well. It really shows who is fresh on the block and who ait.

The ending of the movie is brilliant. The flashbacks of him dancing with the three women who drove him into that path, a path inevitably led to their loss. He gave everything for them, and ended up in nothing.

G3 shows the price Michael had to pay for his acquisition and maintenance of his power. His daughter was murdered. In the end, Michael could not protect his family from "the horrors of this world". Michael never understood he was one of these horrors.

All of this was based on Real World events in the Vatican. Immobiliare was based on SGI a multinational real estate company, which, at the time of the Watergate break-in OWNED the Watergate complex. The Swiss Banker was closely based on Roberto Calvi, an Italian Banker and "associate" of both the P2 Masonic Lodge and the Italian Mafia. He was also known as "God's Banker". (The actor who plays the "Swiss Banker" looks awfully like Calvi!) The senior figures in the real world were Michele Sindona, a Banker and real life member of the Gambino Crime family and Licio Gelli, the leader of the P2 Masonic lodge. None of what Calvi, Gelli or Sindona accomplished would have been possible without the assistance of Bishop (later Archbishop) Paul Marcinkus, US born head of the Vatican Bank. I hope in later videos on tis topic, these Real World parallels are made clear.

Main problems I have with part 3. 1. Sofia as Mary was terrible, especially her scene with Pacino on the rooftop, she didn’t know what she was doing. Sofia didn’t have acting experience. Winona Ryder would have made a better choice, and I’m still mad at her for not being in the movie. 2. The meeting helicopter scene didn’t not fit in a Godfather film. It was something out of an action movie. 3. George Hamilton didn’t fit either, Robert Duvall was needed in the movie but paramount didn’t want to pay him. 4. They made Connie and Kay look too old, they were still good looking women and they made them look like grandmas even though their characters were in their 50’s. 5. They should have done more New York scenes but they out too much time in Sicily and the opera. Overall a disappointment movie. I understand to make Michael legit business man but why still have him in mafia meetings then. Story doesn’t make much sense.

*"I understand to make Michael legit business man but why still have him in mafia meetings then"* That is actually the point, it is very difficult for someone of status within the criminal underworld to disentangle from it, and there are no formal process to do so. It's a not uncommon plot point for many crime story, a gradual process that requires great care and a period of weakness where your enemy can get at you.

I rather enjoyed the George Hamilton character. His presence made an impression the family was moving in a different direction. He was strictly by-the-book, and no sleaze-ball conniving tricks like framing a senator for murder (even thought the senator was a sleaze-ball himself).

My biggest problem with G3 was that it leaned too heavily on the success of the previous two movies, reusing all the devices and scenes that worked for those. I found it to be more of a trip of nostalgia, than a unique story unto itself. Also, after the casino massacre, "Zasa, you son of a b!tch" was just so lame and cringy.

My only real issue with the third movie, but it's a movie killing issue, is that it is redundant. We ultimately see and learn nothing new. Think about the ending of the second movie. Now think about the ending of the third movie. Isn't Michael's position and fate the same? He's sees yet another close family member dead due to the Corleone family's criminal existence. The third movie has a lot going on but it's all just busy work. Pieces get shuffled around but to no apparent purpose in terms of advancing the characters or their story. If all you wanted is more Godfather material it's fine, but it doesn't tell you anything about the nature of their futures that you couldn't guess from what you saw in the first two movies.

One of my biggest issues with this movie is...I believe Al Pacino had lost or forgotten Michael's character. Al was way too animated, and vocal, almost even crude playing this version of Michael. Whereas in the first two films, Michael was tacit, tactile, and extremely balanced. That for me was the essence of Michael, not the animated, almost cartoonish version.
@josephadorno92
@josephadorno92 Год назад
Al Pacino himself has gone on record as saying that he would've liked to have redone that performance, because he "didn't understand at the time" what Michael would be like at that age until he, himself, got older and understood how to have played an older Michael better.
@mikehammer1777
@mikehammer1777 Год назад
@@josephadorno92 I didn’t know that. Makes a ton of sense though. Maybe it’s me…but Al Pacino’s acting style took a drastic turn right after Scarface. He went from a methodical, intricate actor (Serpico, Panic in Needle Park, Author Author, And Justice For All) to an exceedingly animated style. I understand the Tony Montana character had to be larger than life to work on screen, but maybe it’s me….but all his work since Scarface has very heavy Montana imprints on them…..so I chalk up the misinterpretation of Michael in GF3 to that.

@@mikehammer1777 "Sea of Love", "Frankie and Johnny", "Glengarry Glenross", "Heat", "The Merchant of Venice", "Looking For Richard" and "Donnie Brasco" all offer good latter-day performances from Al Pacino that show he can rise to the occasion and offer unexpected and different performances from his 70's films.

When reuniting with Kay in part 1 and early in part 2 he keeps saying his business will be legitimate soon, Immobiliare is Michael finally accomplishing his objective, only to find out the game here is even more dangerous than running a casino.

@04:43 - I've seen this before. When a movie shows the viewer a newspaper headline, they never think of making the movie more realistic by having someone actually write a few sentences that would support the headline. If you pause the video here, you will see that the article was copied and pasted from some beginner computer course. In addition, the typeface used "Immobiliare Takeover Appears Likely..." is not the same one as on the rest of the paper. And this cheapens the movie by a lot. They'll spend millions on props, but they skimp on something so simple and cheap, that it takes what little credibility was left, from the movie.

I saw part III as the first of the three and with _zero_ prior knowledge of the saga. Just people said, yeah, Pacino is famous and the prior parts, too, lets go to the cinema ... that was 30 years ago. And I am still confused about the story. Don't know if that was intended ... after all a bunch of mafioso trench wars where most of them get killed. Beautifully filmed, yes. But the story remains strange. To me at least.

I enjoyed the movie from the start. Part of that was because I got the gist of the plot due to remembering things from a 60 Minutes show about the Vatican bank back in the day and the death of the banker under the bridge and of course the Pope who died after about a month. So I and others, got what the story was heading towards. Mostly I was disappointed by the lack of Robert Duvall, but after reading what they had in mind to do with the Hagen character I'm glad he was not in it, much like the original ideas for Peter Clemensa in II and later Willie Chicci in III. As for Sofia Coppola, I thought she was absolutely gorgeous. Her performance was fine for the character she played. My other complaint was Connie Corleone. Talia Shire was fantastic, one of her best performances. But Connie's transformation from II to III was not explained pretty much at all. It should have been. Overall, give II another chance for what it is, not for what it could have been. 3.5-4 out of 5 IMHO.

For starters, having it without Tom Hagen was a big minus right there. Having Vincent, the illegitimate son of Santino that comes in from out of nowhere in the previous storyline go from street muscle guy to the Don was too much of a stretch. Zaza's character is nowhere near as menacing as say Sollozo was, almost came off as buffoonish. Kay's part in the film could have been completely removed altogether and nobody would have missed her. And as for the whole Immobilare / Vatican part of the story, it wasn't that it was too complex to understand, it was just boring. It also seemed strange that Altobello and Lucchesi accepted Vincent as an instant turncoat without an ounce of suspision. It's what happens when a film is made out of personal financial necessity on Coppala's part.
