CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Senator Geary (G.D. Spradlin) tries to strong arm Michael (Al Pacino), but the threat fails to work.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Francis Ford Coppola's legendary continuation and sequel to his landmark 1972 film, The Godfather, parallels the young Vito Corleone's rise with his son Michael's spiritual fall, deepening The Godfather's depiction of the dark side of the American dream. In the early 1900s, the child Vito flees his Sicilian village for America after the local Mafia kills his family. Vito (Robert De Niro) struggles to make a living, legally or illegally, for his wife and growing brood in Little Italy, killing the local Black Hand Fanucci (Gastone Moschin) after he demands his customary cut of the tyro's business. With Fanucci gone, Vito's communal stature grows, but it is his family (past and present) who matters most to him -- a familial legacy then upended by Michael's (Al Pacino) business expansion in the 1950s. Now based in Lake Tahoe, Michael conspires to make inroads in Las Vegas and Havana pleasure industries by any means necessary. As he realizes that allies like Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg) are trying to kill him, the increasingly paranoid Michael also discovers that his ambition has crippled his marriage to Kay (Diane Keaton) and turned his brother, Fredo (John Cazale), against him. Barely escaping a federal indictment, Michael turns his attention to dealing with his enemies, completing his own corruption.

+bindi06 Well the Senator needed a few lessons in humility and wisdom anyways. The touch of humility would imply showing respect for those that are above your station and to know your own place. And the touch of wisdom would be the point when you realize which ones you can and cannot make threats against. A wise man would always try to keep himself on the good side with the Corleone's, while only a fool would make them his enemies.

I also like the choice (don't know if it was Pacino's or Coppola's or the editor's) to not have Michael meet Tom's gaze when Tom looks at Michael after looking at the Senator. It might have made for a pleasing conjunction of visual continuity in the edit, linking the three characters as a triangle - the Senator's unsparing insult, Tom's reaction before glancing at Michael, Michael returning the look of "woah, this guy" back at Tom, before turning back to the Senator. But it would have weakened Michael if we'd seen him exchange glances with Tom, because it would have betrayed a slight need for support. Michael doesn't need anyone else's validation, verbal or non-verbal. Michael knows his own mind, keeps his own counsel. The cards you see of his are the cards he wants you to see.

Ballowax 2002 You were born in 2002 & are a younger viewer so it’s fine that you almost fell asleep. The Godfather films are definitely slow paced & are almost 50 years old, so there’s a fair amount of compromise & patience required from viewers who are used to modern movies when they’re watching The Godfather films. The films also deliver the plot more subtly without the obvious exposition or straight forward nature of modern movies, so it often takes multiple viewings before someone truly enjoys The Godfather films to their fullest potential. But maybe wait a few years, or just watch it now...and just be prepared beforehand knowing you’ll be sitting there for 3 hours, it’s a slow paced film about family & honour and less about the glamour & action of other post-Scorsese gangster films...and if you just sit back and give it a chance you’ll probably eventually appreciate it. I see The Godfather films as similar to Lord of the Rings anyway..both based on books & both with troves of backstories, timelines, characters, etc to explore..so it is worthwhile once you do finally get the chance to understand the Godfather films because then you can explore all the themes and really go in depth to it and appreciate the 9 hours of pure cinema from all the 3 movies. Godfather films aren’t the most action packed or fun films out there, but they are certainly enjoyable once they ‘click’ with you, you know? It’s a gradual process to understanding the series but once you do understand then it’s a great experience.

He was a U.S. Senator. One of the most powerful positions on the planet. You control the law and direction of the most influential country on the planet, and you are essentially untouchable, because unlike murdering another anonymous Mafia henchman, murdering a Senator would be headlines around the world (bad for Corleone business). This is why he was so cocky, and why Michael had to "take it" (at least for a while) and couldn't kill him.
@laminage

Yep, he didn't act intimidated but after the meeting with The Senator, Michael looked at Tom as if to say "We're going to deal with this Mofo!" and boy did they ever.
@latinolawdog5067
@latinolawdog5067 8 лет назад
laminage No doubt about that! Michael realized that while he couldn't take him out, he could exploit a weakness in that he was an elected official. Unlike an enemy Mafia cohort, a Senator's power is derived from his public image and how the voting masses perceive him. He has to care a great deal about his image, and Michael knew that he could use that against him....which he did to perfection

@KaizerBeatz-vf9wf
@KaizerBeatz-vf9wf 4 года назад
subkontrabasklarinet Godfather did reference the previous film. It’s title alone made it the first movie to reference its sequel status in the title since all other previous movies chose new titles for each sequel rather than using the number system so they wouldn’t scare off viewers who hadn’t seen the first. Not to mention something like Robert De Niro saying “I make him an offer he don’ refuse” in an Italian accent was probably the most fan-servicing one-liner in the Godfather series. Overall though maybe they would’ve put the line in if it was a modern film...but then again would this have been produced in the modern era? How would cinema have been different had Godfather 2 not released in 1974. There’s so many variables that make your comment bizarre & difficult to relate to since it seems more like a criticism on modern cinema as opposed to a genuine prediction of what would happen had the bunch of variables you laid out All happened to lead to Godfather Pt 2 being a modern movie. It’s just a bizarre far out concept. No offence though.

@davidhinde3229
@davidhinde3229 4 года назад
Robert Masina the parallels go so much further. Starts with a party. Follows with an attempt on the life of one of Michael’s family members. Michael then becomes colder and more ruthless until finally at the end he settles all family business. However, the parallels show lots about the differences between the two dons. Vito’s party looks fun, smiling, laughter, very Italian and family oriented. By contrast, Michaels looks forced and boring. The respect he is given by all those who come to see him in his office shows the respect which he commands. However, Michael’s 2 visitors, Geary and Pentangeli show a fraction of the respect shown to Vito in the first film. There are loads of details and I could go on but do not wish to bore you, and many little details like both films ending with the door being shut on Kay just goes to show the thought put into this fantastic film.

Michael was less gangster, just more power hungry to an expense that destroyed his family and everyone around him. Now Vito..he was a boss. He was a criminal who ordered death, but throughout that he still kept his family as the priority, still was altruistic and looked out for his community both in the younger years and even in his later years on days like his daughter’s wedding day. Vito took in & adopted a son too and maintained a balance of all necessary qualities. Michael was just trying to be a gangster though. Trying to be his father. And overcompensating with how hard he tried and that was ultimately his mistake imo. He wasn’t really a gangster or an admirable boss..he was just obsessed with power.

This antagonism between Michael and Geary always reminds me of that scene in _Part I_ where he sees his father for the last time. Don Vito had to bring his sons Sonny and Fredo into his world of crime because he had no choice - he wasn't yet a wealthy man. But Michael was born _after_ Vito created his empire, and Michael's future was going to be his life's greatest reward. He wanted Michael to go to school, to study law, and to be a U.S. Senator, because he thought of politics as the major leagues where the _ultimate_ gangsters were: "those bigshots who hold the strings." You can tell that Geary sees himself exactly that way - that he considers Michael beneath him, an inferior breed of criminal. . . . . And Michael is about to prove them both wrong, by putting this one "bigshot" in his place.
@nicky29031977
@nicky29031977 3 года назад
Actually Michael was born just before Vito got involved in the mafia. In part 2 we see Vito taking Michael (then a toddler) in his arms and saying in Italian "Michael your father loves you very much" just after he's killed Fanucci. As for not having any choice in Sonny's and Fredo's regards they themselves chose to get involved when Vito wanted them both to lead honest lives. It's written in the book. Vito's long term goal, which he then passed down to Michael, was to make the Corleone family entirely legitimate since he knew that by continuing in the mafia sooner or later they'd all end up getting murdered , and so it proved with sonny's death.
