The Godfather Part II is a 1974 American epic crime film produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola from the screenplay co-written with Mario Puzo, starring Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Robert De Niro, Talia Shire, Morgana King, John Cazale, Mariana Hill, and Lee Strasberg. It is the second installment in The Godfather trilogy. Partially based on Puzo's 1969 novel The Godfather, the film is both sequel and prequel to The Godfather, presenting parallel dramas: one picks up the 1958 story of Michael Corleone (Pacino), the new Don of the Corleone family, protecting the family business in the aftermath of an attempt on his life; the prequel covers the journey of his father, Vito Corleone (De Niro), from his Sicilian childhood to the founding of his family enterprise in New York City.
Following the success of the first film, Paramount Pictures began developing a follow up to the film, with much of the same cast and crew returning. Coppola, who was given more control over the film, had wanted to make both a sequel and a prequel to the film to tell the story of the rise of Vito and the fall of Michael.
Principal photography began in October 1973 and wrapped up in June 1974. The Godfather Part II premiered in New York City on December 12, 1974, and was released in the United States on December 20, 1974, receiving divided reviews from critics but its reputation, however, improved rapidly and it soon became the subject of critical re-evaluation. It grossed between $48-88 million worldwide on a $13 million budget. The film was nominated for eleven Academy Awards at the 47th Academy Awards and became the first sequel to win for Best Picture. Its six Oscar wins also included Best Director for Coppola, Best Supporting Actor for De Niro and Best Adapted Screenplay for Coppola and Puzo. Pacino won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Some have deemed it superior to The Godfather.[4] Both Part II and its predecessor remain highly influential films, especially in the gangster genre, and are considered to be among the greatest films of all time. In 1997, the American Film Institute ranked it as the 32nd-greatest film in American film history and it retained this position 10 years later.[5] It was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1993, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[6] The final film in the trilogy, The Godfather Part III, was released in 1990.

Maybe im wriong, but don’t think Michael was telling Al to kill fredo in this scene. Al wouldn’t have darting eyes if that was the case. The darting eyes signify confusion and uncertainty. Al felt he was witnessing both weakness from Michael (for possibly forgiving Fredo), but also strnegth in form of a strong stare form Michael. Michael was conveying weakness and dominance and it made Al somewhat uncertain.

@Tom Ross TV RAW First off, don't forget Connie set up Sonny to be killed by playing into Carlo's hand, but she got a pass on that! Very much similarly, The stupidity and gullibility of Fredo resulted in the assassination attempt on Michael with no abundant intentionality. I'm pretty sure Michael knew that Fredo was not aware of the plot, however he just couldn't let it go, he just couldn't afford to keep having a careless brother in his crew! That aside, Fredo, unlike Connie, never disrespected Michael or questioned his leadership in public. He did it in private, yes, but for a person in Michael's position the public image is not a trivial thing! But she was ... well ... she!

@@alimovasati8745 what? connie did not set up sonny to be killed… you clearly did not watch the movie with a clear and sane mind. the reason he *truly* killed fredo was because fredo was envious. fredo is the older brother, he is the one who’s supposed to have the “business” he’s supposed to be the leader. yet fredo never got the attention of his father nor the respect. fredo did what he did because he wanted to be in control and of course michael is taking that as a threat… fredo literally befriended michael’s enemies in a way and gave information he was never supposed to give. in cuba michael urges fredo to ride in the car with him saying “you’re still my brother” that was the last chance and last test for fredo. connie did things out of naivety, she did things because she wanted a better life or missed her father, she did things for attention. while fredo did it to “assert dominance”

The musical moment of Michael's false forgiveness is one of Rota's greatest artistic achievements. It is a musical piece that even has experimental findings, not only because Kay's love theme alternates with The Immigrant, but the sound climax of this theme is precisely the beginning of it.

@CsnvLsRnst
@CsnvLsRnst 2 года назад
Another touch of genius is Nino Rota's soundtrack from 2:30 to 3:44, because it mirrors the exact same feeling we, as the audience, are experiencing: The build-up, the soaring moment when the brothers hug and we think, for a split second, that some redemption has been achieved... And then Michael raises his cold eyes to Neri, just as the music is brutally, and anti-climacticly brought down, and just like Al, we realize through the music that everything was a lie.

You're right, this piece of music called The immigrant it's the best theme for the godfather saga, it has been also played on the scene where the 9 years old Vito arrived in USA, and from that piece it was taken the love theme for the part 3.

For me this is the best scene from the Godfather Part II. There are little words spoken but so many emotions flowing. Fredo's fear for his life, Connie's fear of one brother intending to kill another, Michael's heartbreak of his brother's betrayal. The underlying intention of this scene is the conflict between the siblings, while the text is the funeral of their mother. As if with their mother gone, little remains of the Corleone family are gone. Brilliant acting by Pacino, don't say a word yet display a whole lot of emotions. Equally supported from John and Talia. And not to mention the excellent background score. That's why the Godfather movies after 5 decades still are considered greatest.

The love, the forgiveness, the reconciling embrace and then the wordless glance at Al Neri: "I've forgiven him. My mother is dead. Now do it." A supreme irony and a universally human tragedy in that Michael had to kill his family in order to preserve it and uphold its honor. Fredo regrets what he did, because he understands the repercussions after the fact. He has always been a jealous simpleton. Always assumed the family business should have gone to him as the eldest. How the heck do you keep someone like that around?? 🤷🏻‍♀️

what strikes me about this scene is how quiet the kids are, and how obedient. when connie walks in they are'nt jumping around IT"S AUNTIE CONNIE , they don't argue back with their dad, it's like they are little mafia soldiers too . :( in contrast when vito was alive the children were always happy running around, even made him get well soon cards when he was sick

Just saw last night for the first time. And after Fredo just annoyed me in the first one, you get to understand what a throwaway son Fredo must have felt to his dad. And I just loved fredo by the end of Godfather II, as he sees Anthony and that Anthony is feeling the same way he always did, ignored and unloved by his father where he is always asking about Michael, writing notes asking Michael questions to engage him but being ignored, having TOM be the one buying his Christmas gifts, so of course it was natural for him to connect to Fredo…and after all the womanizing and keeping busy, Fredo finally finds the love he was missing in the child he never had and watching them fish together and share stories, they were both finally given what they waited all their lives for. So I was so relieved when Michael forgave him. Michael forgave his brother, his sister had finally forgiven him and had come home to stay, he had beat the senate investigation, Kay was willing to forgive him if he just asked for it…life was giving him back all the happiness that had been taken away over the years…it was a new beginning. And thats where the story should have ended. When I saw the tip of the gun behind Fredo, I was shouting at the screen, “please don’t! Please, he apologized, said he didn’t know it was a hit and if he was lying could you blame him!? His little brother was in control of his whole life! Have mercy…” and then bang. And I couldn’t believe it…I wish there were a cut where it ended right before the boat. Watching him take his brother…why!?… The only solace you get is that Fredo never knew, he was back in the family, loved by Mike (in his eyes) and fishing peacefully. He would never know what happened and just cease to exist peacefully… but I wish he lived.

Connie was an idiot. Her husband helped to murder her brother that cared for her and she kept loving the man that sold out her brother. Then she hated her other brother for getting revenge. She was just a burden to the family, a helpless idiot.

@@Tetex That was a young and naive Connie, this Connie is wiser and is more in tune with Michael's vision. She really did want to help him and did all the way till the end.
