The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, i.e. The GOLD, has issued its updated 2023 reports on diagnosis, prevention and management of COPD in November 2022. There are certain differences in 2023 reports from 2022 reports. The definition of COPD is itself different and very appropriately, now it says that COPD is a heterogenous disease. The 2023 reports has also incorporated a table of etiotype based taxonomy. The symptoms and exacerbation assessment categories of ABCD is now changed to ABE categories and erstwhile C & D categories are merged with E category (E stands for exacerbation category irrespective symptoms burden). In this new report, the usage of LABA+ICS is not encouraged. In patients of E category having blood eosinophil more than 300, the guidelines recommend triple combination of LABA+LAMA+ICS (in a single inhaler device). Finally, there is a change in the definition of COPD exacerbation as well.
