All Sudan is taken by the gold fever. In this country of 40 million inhabitants, nearly one man in fifteen digs in search of the precious yellow metal, the gold of the pharaohs came out of the same deposits 3,500 years earlier.
In Sudan, gold is both trivialized and idolized. The mines near the banks of the Nile, those which provided Egypt with gold for the pharaohs, are once again running at full speed. The yellow metal makes it possible to employ more than a million people and support as many families. The Sudanese state reaps the revenue, but the environmental impact of this industry worries the local populations.
