"Old timers don't dig holes for something to do" I beg the differ. I am very good friends with a old timer in his 90s, he himself dug trenches on top of hills in the summer when there was no water left , to try find reefs. So technically they were digging holes for something to do
These were called costeans & they dug them across benches below the crest of ridges to try and sample how much gold and where it had shed from. They were looking for where the vein hit the surface to sink a shaft! Before the ago of metal detectors this is how it was done! In the mid 1920’s between the 2 world wars in the Great Depression my grandfather & uncle were dry blowing for gold at Coolgardie. They made about 5 pounds a week which was just a little below the basic wage back then. Loaming was the term for the prospecting method the old timers employed, that included digging costeans.
I don't get them using the big machinery, for spending hundreds in fuel they make $50 and walking around they make 14x that, just pay 8 people to walk around
Australia is kinda neat I guess but would never want to live there it looks like such boring wasteland thats way to hot with a ton of deadly animals and bugs
