Dear ross: Frankly, I think that it's laughable how the cops have been patting themselves on the back for finally catching D'Angelo. If you finally catch the guy when he's 73, and 35 years after his last murder, I call that a victory for D'Angelo, not for the cops. What a great deal for D'Angelo !!! At 73, he either sits on his butt at home or in prison. He's not missing much at this point in his life either way. And what a waste of valuable police resources !!! Simple arithmetic told the cops that they're looking for an old man, so what's the point ? The cops kept after D'Angelo simply because they couldn't admit that he was smarter than them. As a taxpayer, I don't want my tax dollars pursuing a criminal who we already know has one foot in the grave. I want the cops going after criminals who can live long enough to do some serious hard time. It could also have something to do with the fact that Paul Holes was born over 22 years after DeAngelo :) As a detective (and previously as a police officer I guess) he was performing a public (government) function, hence the early age of retirement or more precisely lower job seniority needed for it.

@@micha5406/ I wasn't aware that there was such an age difference. Come to think of it, my brother retired at 45. He was a cop. I also think that The Golden State aged incredibly (miraculously) after he got caught. He wanted to look as old & feeble as possible. Apparently he looked much more robust and youthful the day before he got taken in. eg -Riding down the highway at 100 mph on his motorcycle etc.

@@peggypeggy4137 I actually looked it up after seeing your comment 'cause there had to be a reasonable explanation and yeah... he's 52 yo now. Still looks quite sharp for his age. By the way I reckon GSK's aging (visually) will accelerate now as he's really old now, the living standards in jail are far from spa and also the psychological burden of getting caught eventually and having to spend his final years in prison where he will eventually die will take a toll on his appearance real soon. Also, don't know if you've heard but just a couple of weeks ago he told his attorney that he would be willing to plead guilty! (Provably to avoid death penalty though I doubt he would live long enough to make it till the execution). Now it's the prosecution's turn so we'll have to wait to see this play out.

@@micha5406 I hope he does plead guilty-even if it's just to avoid the death penalty. I have heard that they haven't imposed the death penalty in California since 2006. I guess that is why Scott Peterson is still on death row. You are right-he would never live long enough to be executed. I'm just so happy that they caught that POS!!! Better late than never. Amazing how they caught him through his ancestors DNA, don't you think?

@@peggypeggy4137 I also have read somewhere that even the trial itself could take up to 10 years easily because of the legal difficulties resulting from the multiple jurisdictions that he has committed crimes in. So I guess him pleading guilty is, whether we like it or not, probably the only scenario in which we could see a definite end to this and his conviction. Yes, it is truly a groundbreaking case in terms of DNA forensics / genetic genealogy. It really made me realise this when Holes said that even after all the decades of hunting for GSK and the ever increasing profile of the case, presence in media etc. they were nowhere near to catching this guy. You can run but you can't hide forever :)

You don't even need to shell out for a cutting tool to break a window quietly. Place a wet page of a newspaper on the pane and tap with just enough force to break the glass. The wet paper deadens the sound and the pieces of glass tend to stick to the paper instead of falling noisily onto the ground. Burglary 101... ;)

Look at the Zodiac crimes on the map and Dates, first Zodiac crime 6 months after DeAngelo is out of navy and occurs only miles from where he was visiting fathers naval base. Next Zodiac crime occurred where DeAngelo had sister living only miles away. Each ZodIac crime follows distinct highway patterns and areas that DeAngelo had close connections. Hmmm...

Sad but true

In this case one of the biggest problems was the boneheaded refusal of some police to listen to what others were telling them. Those men - always men - bear great personal responsibility for several of these rapes and murders, with all the catastrophic collateral damage they entailed. And all because of ego. Eternal shame on them.

It's clear that some connected the crimes in different areas but were not listened too when they tried to draw it to the attention of the next place in line (Santa Barbara, for instance, didn't want to know). He could have been caught many times over had some police been more interested in the victims than their own petty agendas, but once he moved away they breathed a sigh of relief and thought no more of it. What's surely needed is a state-wide public enquiry into how this was mishandled, though no doubt the same protect-our-territory mentality would prevent that prospect even arising. Btw, I was taken by how much the composite with the left parting does look like him, even now (especially the nose). Which personally I don't think is either here or there, since the resemblance was clearly not striking enough for anyone to identify him (how could it be, given the nature of these things?). The other thing that stands out, listening to that podcast, is the crazy statute of limitations of three years for rape, which strikes us in the UK as bizarre beyond belief (although other European countries have the same nonsense). You have incontrovertible DNA and other evidence, and the guy can't be charged.

Police officers get a full pension after 25 years . So they retire from law enforcement and collect full pension and go do other types of work . When they say retirement in law enforcement. . They mean they are done and on to other means of employment

Obviously everyone is entitled to a fair trial. Problem wrt that is that we let ourselves be carried away with emotion bc of the severity of these crimes. You have to shield yourself from that emotion in order to weigh information correctly. Imagine it is about someone that stole a loaf of bread on a number of occasions a long time ago. What is the evidence? Im not that familiar with the case, but this seems to all revolve around the dna. That is not as strong by itself as it may seem. And yes, if this trial is still to start, it may not be such a good thing to go public as this.

I can guarantee people were saying the same thing when security cameras started solving crimes.

Considering the criminals that have been caught through familiar DNA I'm happy about it. It's true the public has lost freedoms but we've been losing them for awhile and at least this is beneficial. People who attack children don't deserve any rights.

As long as it's only used for criminal investigations I support it 100%. Also the DNA they research is from people who willingly submitted it to trace their family tree. No different using that as a resource like investigators getting DNA from suspects in public places, like the trash they throw away.
