Mudlarking the River Thames in the 1970s was a totally different experience to mudlarking nowadays. I speak to Veteran Mudlark Graham duHeaume who started to mudlark in the 70s and 80s. But How different was it really? And what did he find?
Thank you to Graham duHeaume for telling me about his mudlarking adventures.
Don't forget you need a permit to mudlark on the River Thames. You can find details on the website of the Port of London Authority pla.co.uk
Thank you.

I started metal detecting in the mid 80's and it was seeing photos of the finds of mudlarks and people mudlarking in the magazine Treasure Hunting that really inspired me to go out and look for traces of our past. I went on to work on archaeological excavations and then on to do a degree in archaeology and pursued it for many years as a career. It was seeing the finds of Graham and the others that inspired a life long love of the past. Thank you.

I Love talking and listening to that generation! They are like walking time machines! Movies and documentaries are cool to learn History! Reading books you get to use your imagination. But these people make history come alive! Especially if they are closer to a hundred years old they can take you back in time because they walked it,held it, and most importantly lived it!

Black and white photos have a dimension of shade that is lost when shot in color. I like black and white photos .Every once in a while a motion picture is filmed in black and white like Schindler's List. A Hard Day's Night is enhanced by being filmed in black and white. Always nice to see a young man's face in the 70's and now the face of a distinguished older gentleman in 2024.

What an incredible man, and a spectacular collection! The 70s & 80s were clearly halcyon days for amateur archaeology & metal detecting. I remember in the 90s, reading in the hobby mags stories by Gordon Bailey & "Roman Ron", where it was still possible to wander onto any East Anglian field, gain permission and be tripping over pottery sherds, worked flints, Roman tiles & centuries-old nails.
