The Goldfinch was the book that got me into reading! I read it when I was 12, and it completely altered my brain chemistry...

The development of Boris was so amazing. The way she wrote his monologues it was like I could hear him talking! Boris and Theo’s friendship described by Boris later in the novel was so profound to read. When you live your life assuming you come off one way …but then here is someone describing to you your “mess” but with love …very refreshing to read ! I borrowed this from my local library but I may need this for my personal collection!

I loved The Goldfinch. Looking forward to The Secret History. It's waiting for me on my shelf. I'm currently reading The Dutch House.

One of my favorite books. I have reread numerous times. Highly recommend this book. Wonder why more people do not include it in their "best of all times list". I also enjoyed the movie and am not sure why it has been overlooked. It is beautifully done. Read this book, and enjoy the ride. I hear that Donna Tartt has a new novel expected in 2024.

I love Donna Tarts writing so much but I wasn’t to sure why? I’ve read The Secret History Three times and I’m about 260 pages into The goldfinch and loving it just as much and I’ve come to realise there’s a very limil aspect to her work. Dorm rooms,hotels,staying at another home,long hall ways lingering in rooms it’s like most of her characters exist in this constant transition period?. This is why I love her writing she catches these moments better then anyone else then I’ve ever read and sort of makes it the centre point.

The Goldfinch is my all time favorite book. The characters are more real to me then some real people. I want to like the secret history but I do not. Am I missing something? Does anyone agree the secret history is bad?
@alien9362

I personally love the secret history although the characters are hard to empathise with/relate to because they are all awful people we can say 😂 whereas in the Goldfinch I could immediately create a connection with most of the characters. Maybe this could be a reason for you not liking the secret history

just finished this the other day and i’ve been thinking about it still. never read tartt before but i wound up reading the first 250 pages but had to put it down due to work scheduling but knocked out the rest of it fairly quickly. her prose sunk its teeth into me and the whole novel moves like a bullet train - so fast but so precise. and her dialogue! i could read boris’ dialogue forever. electric in every way. sick novel, so happy i was able to finish it

Really enjoyed your review on this. I’m about 3/4 into reading and wow, Huge impact, and also need to take it in in pieces although I’ve been sucked in like a thriller. I’ve been getting thought it quickly but also want to simmer and take time reading because I’ll be sad to leave the characters once I’m finished.

I love Donna Tartt. She is one of my all time favorite writers. She reminds me of Cormac McCarthy and I would put them at the same level... the top. I also really love The Little Friend. The Secret History wasn't my cup of tea. I read it many years ago though. Maybe I'll give it another read. The Goldfinch is one of those books that is hard to let go of once it's over. It takes over your life when you're in the midst of Theo's world. I guess I can understand people not liking Donna Tartt because of her descriptive and detailed writing style but I am not one of those people. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook. Boris is even better to listen to.

I am currently 300 pages in and i feel like DNFing it because i feel like the story goes so slow and no big things are happening after the mom died. But i still feel like i should continue because the reviews for this book is very convincing. IDK what i am missing,

I'm not a quick reader and don't have a ton of time for it. So The Goldfinch was part of my life for the past two months until I finished it last night. It's such a beautiful book, and I miss Theo, Boris, and Hobie already.

I wasn’t sure what I thought of this book as I was reading it. Definitely was enjoying it throughout but didn’t seem like anything special (it’s long so I was pretty on/off reading it)… But then I read the last 100 or so pages in one sitting and found it incredibly profound / moving. Didn’t realize how much I enjoyed it until I finished it so I could appreciate it as a whole. 5/5 stars. Still prefer secret history (might be weird reason but i think mainly because I get this weird harry potter / cherub series vibe from the school environment plot with captivating characters / friend group that was a little nostalgic)

The worst part of The Goldfinch is that it ruined all other books for me. It’s my favorite book I’ve read at this point. I didn’t have any issue with getting into this book the first time. I got to the bit where Theo speaks about every new event would place him further from his mom. That’s when knew I was in for something great ❤

I read The secret history some years ago and I loved it, then I read The little friend and honestly didn't like it. So The goldfinch stayed on my bookshelf for a loooong time, partially because of this "bad" experience, partially because it's really long. I've also read some very conflicting reviews where people basically either hated it or loved it. I've finally decided to pick it up and, although I don't know if it'll be the best book I've read this year, I'm surprisingly liking it a lot. Ps: reading big scary books on Kindle helps 😂

Great content. I’m currently reading the goldfinch, and almost at the end. Instead of finishing it I’m just searching YT for other people who absolutely adore it, because I don’t want it to be over. What a masterpiece. Im so impressed by every sentence. And I agree with everything you said, so I’m subscribing and curious to see what other books you recommend 😊 I have only read Oliver Twist from Dickens. But I would love to read more, since you mentioned him in this video. Do you have a recommendation on what to read from Dickens next? 🙏🏼
