I mean, this song and its solo are garbage, but Hammett's work up to the Black Album was very different. His solo's seemed composed and used different scales and modes... Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor, Phrygian, Dorian, etc.
It’s seriously like Kirk showed up and did some sloppy improv and said here’s the solo and then bailed. Like no thought was put into it at all. More of the same boring shit he’s been doing the last 20 years. Kirk is not a great guitar player but at least his earlier work you could tell he thought the solos out and put effort into them. This new stuff is just shit.
This dong has all the right ingredients but the wrong arrangements. It's like a pizza but thr toppings are pineapples. Probably a bad example but I still
I said exactly the same things when I first listened to this song and Im not even a great songwriter. I cant believe they put out a song that have such blatant songwriting flaws.
@@Thiago.Carvalho15 I don’t recall either of those songs playing the same exact riff that has no tail variation or anything for nearly a minute and a half. I love Metallica but this is just laziness. I do like the chorus but the rest is just meh🤷♂️ Just my opinion
@@Thiago.Carvalho15 ok yes the chugging part keeps going but Kirk actually layers and adds to the riff and adds a sense of dynamic and I think that’s what keeps it interesting. It builds to something, this song just builds to no man’s land. Hopefully the album is good 🤘Rock on 🤘✌️
I relistened to Hardwired the other day for the first time in a couple years. It's pretty bad as well. But at least it was somewhat fresh at the time. If Hardwired was Load, this is shaping up to be Reload. Greg Fidelman's production doesn't help matters.
@@dvvaughn564 You’re entitled to your opinion. 😂 The songs (for the most part) don’t hold a candle to the pre-2000s material. Their discography is too strong. Hardwired has it’s moments for sure, but I really wouldn’t call it a great album overall, especially by Metallica’s high standards.
@@shaunrevell5594 oh well its not puppets or ride thats for sure. i was holding it against most new "metal music". i mean lets be honest most new metal is garbage sooooo.
In regards of introducing riffs - on of my favourite ones is the verse riff in Holy Wars - not only it’s not introduced AT ALL, but it is actually only heard with the vocals on top 😂 One of the greatest riffs ever, but Mustaine doesn’t even think it’s good enough on its own Fucking legend
This song reminds me of the Cantina from Star Wars. Especially @2:25 and the fact that it just keeps going and going. And the lyrics are are totally an afterthought. I just listened to it twice and the only lyrics I know are "temptation" and "holy-water" which I think he tried to rhyme with "father" but in a strange german accent.
Oddly enough, when you spoke about "procedurally generated" the same thing crossed my mind about all the singles released. If they're going to say at release date that "hey, this thing is completely written by an AI" I'll just lose it.
I'm with ya Trey. Most bad songs have issues with repetition. play it twice, but on the third do something else: - change tempo - harmonize, go up or down an octave - add / remove parts - Full stop, then play again - throw in some acoustic, strings, - intro into a toy microphone, change the whole eq - stereo pan - quick embellishments on transitions (see Van Halen 1 with pick scrapes, screams, and drum fills) - add / remove an effect - Key change - legato, staccato - prelude, interlude - fade in - consonance / dissonance I wish they had more to say, I want to hear what makes them mad now. Perhaps having to walk really far in their mansions, How hard it is to find a radiator for a maserati, Gold toilet seats are too cold to sit on, etc
Comparing the song structure to ones found in pop songs? 🤔...switching up and reacting to Kpop might hold a bright future for you 👌 Too repetitive riff? I wonder how would you react to "Seek & Destroy" 😬😂🤫
The thumbnail to this video absolutely nails how I felt about this song. Every listen since hasn't got past the 1:50 mark. Getting past the generic solo felt like an achievement I never want to repeat
Well it's Metallica past prime for a long time now. Obviously a very important band for me but i cannot listen to anymore cause metal has moved on and beyond, thanks to them to. We owe them a lot but as an old fan the standards changed, the aggression is not there anymore and how could there be? at their age you might no longer boil of riffs in your head and have no longer drive to go balls to the wall cause you've been doin exactly that for decades. "Just keep doing what you only know what to do" is basically where they are now. But you know what? there's a 15 yo out there who thinks this is sick & heavy and that will pick the copy of this album and roll back to the entire discography, discover the true power of this band. That's what happened to me with Reload, got me to Master of Puppets, Ride, And Justice....To this day, they still sound heavy af. No wonder why Metallica always had an ever lasting impact and influence on the career of so many great modern musicians....
There not past there prime. They all can proficiently play all there instruments and JH voice is still good. The song writing is just a bit common sounding. I like the song overall. Just could use a couple tweaks
I think this was one of the best things they've done in ages. The hypnotic nature of it seemed part of the overall song concept. It was serving the song, not lack of inspiration.
I can absolutely agree that if songs like Damage Inc., Leper Messiah, Eye Of The Beholder, The Shortest Straw, or Sad But True (especially), fans would still take a crap on it for being “too repetitive” or “lacking cool parts”. Not to mention how ungrateful fans are now. Metallica came back after quite a long time and nobody's satisfied after begging for new music.
Absolutely agreed. It sounds as if they wrote it for something to do. Something to pass the time. Not to make something awesome. They need to buy "Prisoner of Apathy" from you and go to town.
If Kirk's solo was trimmed a bit and the "temptation!" part was cut entirely, this would be even better. I've never shared my stuff here as I don't want to get the gong, but if anyone is interested in the two Metallica influenced tracks Ive done on recent albums, you can search for "The Last Vanguard" and "In the Dread of Night" here on youtube.
@@treyxaviermusic My point being.. You have no talent. Metallica has made brilliant music for over 40 years, what have you done?? Nothing. People with no musical talent should keep their mouths shut!!
@@treyxaviermusic It's a good song. No changing that fact. Millions of people love it! There's plenty of people who complain about Metallica all the time. I've been hearing you people cry since RTL had a Ballad on it. Smh
So glad, you took us by the hand and got us safe through this tragedy! Thx, man, I mean it! Can you do me a favor and do the same with the new Depeche Mode song, which is (in my opinion) also disappointing in the same way? Love your content and value!
Hardwired and Lux are arguably the best songs they've done over the last two album cycles (that we've heard so far). The main thing they have going for them is that they don't fuck around. Long songs should have an excuse to be long. They shouldn't just be the same riff over and over with zero dynamic or melodic payoff.
I had the same reaction you did when I heard this. I've never been critical of Metallica. I admired what they did with Load and Re-load, and even understood where they were coming from on St. Anger. But this just feels like their phoning it in. One track, ok. But more than that and it's just not doing it for me. Especially when there are bands out there freally pushing things.
It seems like James made a banger chorus then the producer took over and he didn't know what to put around it. So we got the same riffs over and over again. Then that awesome chorus.
I dont fully agree. Thought it was a bit hard of you to both gong for too much repetition and the introduction of a new riff. I would have also liked to see more variations on the main riff instead of hearing so many times, but i like the introduction of a new riff half way, although it should have been worked out more
You see this is why I like your videos. You actually give proper criticism instead of saying this sucks and I’m no longer listening to Metallica. I still say out of three this is the best one and it’s not saying much. I also agree with your criticisms that they should have added some harmonies either vocally or guitar wise during the verses and choruses to give them flavor. Also the main riff as catchy as it is still feels incomplete and needs a proper tail to cap it off. Honestly one of the biggest mistakes Metallica did was part ways with Bob Rock because he helped give Metallica the sound the needed to be great songwriters besides St. Anger. I would still listen to this album but I’m not going to be overly excited about it either, but rather show gratitude they are still here.
I think.. that we are so enslaved to the old metallica... that if they recorded these songs with THE EXACT TONE that they used in master of puppets, we would swallow it whole. I really miss some key changes and choruses with more chords under a fast drum beat you know. maybe they should go back to 20 riffs per song and the old tones??? I just want them to impress us. and I know they can. this band made me start to play guitar for a reason, but.. it just seems so far away xD xD xD
Given the meaning of the title of the album, I think they were trying to go back to their teen selves while writing this album. Even if it isn't true, I for one, will listen to this album with that filter.
I like this song more compared to the other two singles but this is how I think it would’ve been a great song. Shorten the intro or change it up before the verse. Do the temptation bit for the first time or get rid of it all together. And on the final chorus, like you said they should’ve added some variation to it. Other than those things I really liked this song. That’s my own personal opinion on the song.
Ok, so your arguments are valid. But equally, playing a riff 20+ times is also equally valid. There is no definitive way for writing music. Metallica do what they do. That’s why they are Metallica. We get used to their song structures. Good or bad. It’s all music. And we are free to dip a toe whenever or wherever we like. Metallica didn’t get where they are by just hacking up their songs. Your argument that if this song was written by any other band other than Metallica it wouldn’t have been as popular, again maybe valid. But when compared to your song “scream”, the listener is more likely to be left humming the main riff to this Metallica song than latching onto any riff within your song. And to be honest, I couldn’t hum or remember any musical moment within your song after hearing it. Look, songs are songs. Everyone has an opinion. That’s the beauty of it. If you have a cool riff, why not flaunt it, right? If the listeners later find themselves humming a tune in their head later, then there’s your answer. Do they hum it in their head because the riff was played 2 times, or 20 times??? Who cares!!!!! If they like it, they will return for more. It’s all about capturing a musical moment. As soon as you slap rules that a riff has to be played this amount of times, or a song has to be structured that way, it loses the spontaneity. It loses the moment. Always do what you want to do when writing music. Whatever feels right. Always keep it personal.
It's not a problem to repeat the chorus without any changes or additions, if it's catchy. Just a hand full of Metal songs have these changes in their chorus. The problem is that Metallica currently repeats parts like a hundred times. Additionally, the lyrics in the chorus itself repeats a lot, so you get the feeling of too much repetition. And we don't have to talk about the interludes... Nevertheless, I like the song...
You people are crazy. This song is written like standard songs with the chorus repeating. You people are trying so hard to bash this band. It’s really sad.
@@RavensFlock9592 No, he's just telling some true points. Metallica do repeat parts of their songs unnecessarily often and stretch them unbelievably long. They could do better. If Someone wants to defend Metallica, it's me.
Yo Trey. Man I wondered after hearing Screaming Suicide if something might be happening weird on this album. This song has cool parts, but is way unorganized or even lazy. Is this the result of allowing Kirk to write again????? They keeper him off Hardwored and that album did not suffer from stupid mistakes! Anyway…. Your not wrong! Huge fan of METALLICA so I’m down either way
I'm not a massive fan of Metallica, but I do think they influenced other bands I love really well. My favourite Metallica song from the past decade is probably Fall Into The Light by Dream Theater lol.
@@enman009 The whole album's awesome IMO but Fall Into The Light really makes my inner thrash metal fan happy. My favourite band's Megadeth (I don't really care about the drama between them and Metallica but I do prefer Megadeth by a long way) so whenever Dream Theater get a bit thrash-influenced it's always a treat for me.
@@faroffgrace5490 Glad to see more DT fans. I'm indifferent towards both Megadeth and Metallica, but I still like most of their music (Metallica just a tiny bit more). If you want more trashy Dream Theater, for the love of God, listen to Endless Sacrifice. The last 4 minutes of that song are face melting marvels, some of their best riffs and brilliantly performed. Seriously, it truly feels powerful.
@@enman009 Oh trust me, I've listened to all of DT's albums. Endless Sacrifice is an absolute banger! Melancholy verses, hooky chorus, crazy instrumental section and, as you said, a great ending. Love the live version from their 2012 tour too.
It's such a simple recipe. They could have slow trem picked or fast chopped on the first 2 bars of every 4 part riff. Then sing and chug on the last 2. Drums could double up for 2 wouldn't hurt either. It makes it seem a lot less repetitive. Intro and outro almost always go for 8 bars but more drumming at the end would be cool. I like the chorus, like the solo and really like how James sounds on this track. Everyone in the world understands quarter time, half time, full time, horse gallops and yes double time for literally every riff and tempo. Maybe they wanted it repetitive and simple?
... Should Metallica bring back Bob Rock? If they're gonna stay with this kind of Black Album meets Kill 'Em All approach that they've had for this and the previous album, why not bring back the guy who made the Black Album what it is? Or bring back Flemmimg Rasmussen and go back to Master of Puppets. 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️ That'd be my pick.
You'll have to wait till the actual downfall 🤣 Although Hardwired was utterly boring and this one takes the same road, they're still very much on the front scene.
Dude they're fan base are so fucking blind James could literally take a shit on an explorer while Kirk fucked a wah pedal and Lars headbutted a snare drum, and they'd still say it was a "BANGER!". It's just embarrassing when fans will love a band so much, they're completely ignorant of the quality of their new music. This song is absolute drivel and boring as hell. It's like I've heard this same song from the last 3 albums. Most songs from the last 3 albums, especially the last 2 have sounded exactly the same, same riffs, same drums, and same absolutely HORRENDOUS Wah pedal leads from a clearly past it, old, shitty Kirk Hammett who clearly doesn't give 2 fucks about his playing anymore. Why he's still in the band is beyond me. He should have been let go after Death Magnetic. Ive said this for years but Metallic would be so much better if they hired a new young lead guitarist. Look at what it's done for Megadeth man. They're killing it right now. Saying that James and Lars egos wouldn't allow anyone else messing with their formula......ie......the formula that theyve been trying to get back since the Black album.......this song makes me hate Metallica. Purely for the fact that they expect fans to pay for this shite.
Alright dammit, subbed! 🤘🏼 Love the content. I love Metallica. I have mixed feelings about this song. But the repetition is killing me in this song. I want them to do better because I KNOW they can! Like you said, I’m not hoping for another Master of Puppets and I don’t want another one. I just wish they would make it sound like they give a shit.
Oh dam' somebody should tell Metallica about the Trey Xavier Complete Rock and Metal Songwriting course then maybe they would finally write a good song. And on that note somebody remind me what awesome song Trey Xavier wrote roflmao ;))))
I get where you are coming. Yeah it is repetitive, but what song isnt? I do like the slow build. You can hear hints of eeye of the beholder in it with the slow build. You can hear hints of Thr Thing that Should Not Be when James sings the verse. Its a good song.
What if it is done intentionally (repetitive structuring)? That's what they want now, even if it is not popular. And they can do it because who they are. Just a question to save the day... Btw I am pre black album, AJFA fan. But this chorus is awesome!
I don't know music theory but I saw since Load and Reload ( although I liked those albums) how they changed the lyrics structure, and it becomes so simple and repetitive. Anybody notice that ?
i like these songs so i'm not nervous about that but i do gotta calm you down, most experienced bands, which metallica obviously is, do not release the best songs as singles!! at least they shouldn't. that would take away from the entire album. so even if i didn't like these singles, i would still believe that there will be better songs on the album
This songs gives me the vibes of writing a 500 word essay but it needs to be 2000 words so you pad it the fuck out and then rush the conclusion. Pop songwriting is usually simple but the arrangements and production makes it interesting. It serves a dual purpose, its memorable and has plenty of ear candy. This song was not memorable outside of making a meme out of the length of the build up before vocals.
