ABOUT THE GOOD PLACE
From Michael Schur, executive producer of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and "Parks and Recreation," comes a smart, unique new comedy that follows Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell, "House of Lies," "Veronica Mars"), an ordinary woman who, through an extraordinary string of events, enters the afterlife where she comes to realize that she hasn't been a very good person. With the help of her wise afterlife mentor (Ted Danson, "Bored to Death," "Cheers"), she's determined to shed her old way of living and discover the awesome (or at least the pretty good) person within.

I think the whole point was that she shouldn't have passed because she *wasn't* one of the rare few who could've overcome that obstacle without distraction. The Good Place is supposed to be highly exclusive in terms of the positive impact people have had, not just for people who are more good than bad.
@leow637
@leow637 5 лет назад
She knew that she wasn't supposed to enter any of the rooms. That was explained very clearly to her. She reiterates that when she tells her parents "I'm risking a lot to be here right now". She was also very aware that if she failed the test, her friends would also all go to the bad place. So she was prepared to put their eternal happiness at risk in order to enter the room with her parents and get closure simply for herself. That is a phenomenally selfish act, and is the reason why she failed, regardless as to whether she took a learning point away from it or not.

Truly questions the aspects of what is actually morally right nd what is not... Ig we can't ever define certain things to be right or wrong... Wanting a closure more of as a child seems to be a good thing to me coz u hv this expectation , a different feeling of being belonged by your parents nd when u don't get it, if u decide to get a closure I think no matter what the situation is it is both morally nd ethically right.... Her character and Eleanor r truly the characters that really raise many questions... Nd i love it...
@ravenng4450
@ravenng4450 4 года назад
Her test was to see if she still seeks validation from other people. All she had to do was to enter the red door and ignore the other door that let her see what people really think about her, hence she failed because deep down she still needs validation from other people.

Raven Ng well how was she ever going to get over that need without confronting her parents first? This test was designed for her to fail. At least with Eleanor, she’s had the chance to confront her issues and grow from them. Tahani never really had that chance.
@tacosmexicanstyle7846

clubOrange I see where you’re coming from, but another aspect of what put Tahani in the bad place to begin with was that she was selfish and had bad motivation for doing what she did on Earth. Tahani acknowledges that she’s risking both her and her friends’ eternal fate by opening the door, just because she wants closure. But she still makes the choice to open that door anyway, which is a selfish act because the people she condemns by doing so have no power over her choice. She places her need for closure and validation above the social good and that is why she failed imo.

Man, I truly despise Tahanis parents. I know they're characters, but I've known some people with parents like that and they're the absolute worst. I honestly think Tahani should not be punished that much considering it's essentially her parents fault for emotionally abusing her all her life and turning her into the person she was on earth, all for their approval, which is not her fault. It's how (child) psychology works.

I think that's kind of the problem with judging people as good or bad when people are formed by things they can't control, like their genetics or their environment. Tahani may have grown up to be an attention-starved narcissist, but that was just her way of reacting psychologically to her family circumstances. I think that's something that the show is seeking to address; people are complicated, and they change, and they are influenced and shaped by a thousand experiences and circumstances every day. Can there really be a moral judgement on someone from an objective point of view when all human experience is subjective?
@lauraqueentint
@lauraqueentint 5 лет назад
it's unfair to Tahani, I think. This test was supposed to be testing if they've improved in the afterlife, which tahani PROVES she did in this scene, by letting go of trying to meet her parent's expectation. You can tell that when she left the room, she didn't CARE about their opinion anymore. even confronting them, it has MADE her a better person. the goal wasn't that she SHOULDn't care about ANYONE's opinion BEFORE KNOWING, its even AFTER knowing, she DIDN'T care. I guess the judge's test was wrong.

I love how this show so seamlessly pulls off an open critique on the very idea of a “good place” and a “bad place”, especially in such an accessible, clever and genuinely funny way. I feel like this is particularly seen through the use of their characters. Eleanor, for example, is self-centred to the nth degree. There is absolutely no denying that. She is manipulative, she has done very very bad things and has constantly made those around her miserable. What complicates this is both that she had terrible, abusive parents and that she has the capacity for change, even if she is in the afterlife (and arguably, because she _is_ in the afterlife?). Her character is therefore very arguably a criticism for those who can change, but whose circumstances in life do not allow for those changes to happen. Is it really fair for Eleanor to be in the “bad place” when she can learn how to be a better person? Chidi is moral. Incredibly so! To the point where he dedicated his life to studying moral philosophy. His obsession with the rigidity, of deontology (the ethical study of duty and obligation) and the strict moral codes set forth by those before him (e.g. Immanuel Kant) was a manifestation of his own very overpowering anxiety disorder(s). Is it really fair for Chidi to be in the “bad place” when he was, at his core, a kind, ethical person who never set out to cause anybody harm? Jason is impulsive, reckless and overall has led a pretty destructive life. However, he was and is intellectually impaired. He was often too wrapped up in his own unique perception of the world to have the capacity to reflect on the impact of his actions. Is it really fair for Jason, often too oblivious to notice his wrongdoings (let alone to act upon them!), to end up in the “bad place”? Tahani lived a life in the shadow of her sister, and her actions were always done in attempt to gain the approval of her parents. She was, with this and amongst other means, very much emotionally abused, with this abuse continuing even into adulthood. She, overall, raised billions in efforts for charity and goodwill-she led a highly influential life and without doubt bettered the lives of many on Earth. Is it fair, then, for all of the good she has done to be discarded because of the aftereffects of her abuse, or even besides that-just because she did not particularly care about what she was doing do other people? I just find it interesting to analyse these nuances to the main characters, but similar themes are within secondary characters. The amount of heavy philosophical concepts packed into this show just continues to amaze me. Again let me say: I simply adore this show!💜 [EDIT: I slightly improved on some of the spelling, punctuation & grammar of this, and made some small word replacements so that it was made slightly easier to read. Thank you for all of the incredibly kind and insightful responses so far and I hope whoever's reading this has a beautiful day!]

That's why I think the most interesting interpretation of Hell, is in the show Lucifer. You don't go there because of the things you did on Earth, or the people you've hurt or anything like that. But with your own guilt and the interpretation of your actions. It's not as simple as demons punishing you, it's what you feel you deserve as a person. Your deep seeded subconscious guilt. Just found that to be the most interesting, even though The Good Place raises interesting questions as well.

To me, this was the first true indication that the system was flawed: *For Tahani, she might have been tempted by her parents' opinions of her but she actively acknowledged that she needed to hear their disapproval to be able to fully move on from it. The system didnt account for her need for closure in condeming her, and thus was flawed. *For Jason, it gave him an obvious situation, and gave no regard for his choice to self-reflect and attempt to act in a considered and measured way. In effect, Judge Gen gave them tests with flawed binary outcomes (i.e. ones that had very specific paramaters for success) and exposed how insane the system was. Kudos to the showrunners!!

I think every appearance of the Judge is brilliant, because they show just how entrenched into the system she is - she IS the system. Tahani's growth is apparent, and like Michael points out the system can't tell you who someone's going to be tomorrow. Tahani absolutely grew from this, and that's a good thing! We're always learning and changing. But because the Judge is a product of this system there's no nuance here. You didn't do exactly what I told you to do so you fail - that's just a poorly designed test. What does that prove if Tahani did do it? That she can follow directions. Not that she's a better person. The Judge is just so well written and we don't really see her turn around until she goes to earth herself, and as frustrating as she is she illustrates the issues with the system brilliantly.

No way would her parents be in the good place after what they did to Tehani and technically Kamillah since though she had received praise from them all her life they told her people would only like her for her accomplishments and not for the type of person she is. So when she finds herself in a position of being unable to accomplish anything any more She's going to realize all she ever had was a deafening applause that she used to substitute for real emotional relationships and will be alone for the rest of her life.

I liked how Jason became more mindful, gained the ability to read the room, and be at peace and silent like a monk at the finale. In season 4, Janet told Jason to stop being impulsive, and that caused Jason to reevaluate his decision making. With that major change, Jason took more time discovering who he was and what decisions he makes to get into The Good Place.

It was an illustration of the core message of the show: you can overcome your challenges, but sometimes you have to learn from mistakes in order to grow. I dont get Jason's test, what's supposed to be the point? Actually, Jason's character is kinda fickle. like the writers dont know what his issues are supposed tobe aside from being dumb. Eleanor is inscure of good people and preferred to be alone, Tahani is always in need of approval and admiration, Chidi is too rigid and too concerned about the theories of what's right that he failed to actually do anything right. How about Jason? Season 1 showed that he hated having to hide who he is. Then the test in season 2 is about impulse. Can anyone help me out here?
@stevenharding4595
@stevenharding4595 6 лет назад
As I understand it, Jason's flaw is his self-control; In season 1 he had trouble restraining himself, even when it put himself, Elanor, Chidi (and I guess later Janet) in peril. He always wanted to express himself and every stupid thought he had, without thinking of himself or others. He died because he acted on a stupid, spur-of-the-moment idea and he endangered his friends (and married Janet) for the same reason. It is important to compare Jason with Elanor. Elanor before the series acts in self-interest amd makes decisions to benefit herself, wheras Jason just does whatever he feels like, no matter how stupid. Elanor acts for self-reward, wheras Jason acts for self-satisfaction. His improvement is the opposite i.e considering other people before his own desires. The first inclincling of this is the fact that he willingly takes Chidi's ethics lessond in S1, but I feel like it carries on through. In S2 he happily leaves the awesome party to remind Tahani of her worth, and later his reason for accepting his test in the Neutral Zone is to help his friends. Unfortunately he was still too self-interested to request a different trial that didnt required an unpleasant game of Madden. As the judge stated, Jason didnt pause and reflect enough to ask for an alternative, no matter how noble his intentions.But after all, Jason's problem is instinctive self-interest and the thing that he takes from his time in the fake Good Place is to stop and reflect (and meditate) on his problems.

Yeah I guess that totally makes sense. Hist first flashback involved him exposing that he wasnt that famous DJ even though he was told not to, not even thinking the repercussions. Jason's issue was too much YOLO, I think. Thank you guys!

Jason is the only legit bad person there. Look at the way he was fine with people going to hell in his place. He didn't care about possibly damning innocents to eternal punishment that was his fault to begin with. Tahani shouldn't be in the bad place but Chidi definitely belongs there. He is so concerned with his thoughts Thatcher makes life hell for the people around him and he doesn't even take time to feel bad about it because his intentions are always good he feels justified about being the selfish guy he is.
@sidney4357
@sidney4357 5 лет назад
shihoblade One of the main themes of this show is that characters are punished because of circumstances they can't escape. Eleanor was abused by her parents and so learned how to take care of herself before others, because he grew up learning that if she didn't take care of herself nobody else would. Chidi has a (presumably) undiagnosed mental disorder that makes his life so difficult that at times he cannot function and his strong moral code only exacerbates the problem. Tahani was told by her parents that she is 'worthless' and 'will never be as good as her sister' and so she is always striving to do better and better and reach unrealistic expectations set by her parents and Kamila. Jason was brought up in an underprivileged area with little education. The people he hangs out with and even his father, Donkey Doug, are terrible influences and as a result he never truly learned how to control his instincts or understand the consequences of his actions. When these characters are removed from their terrible circumstances it is shown that they are able to learn and grow from everything.

It's something like this: 1. Eleanor had bad intentions and did bad actions, 2.Chidi and Jason has good intentions but did bad actions (Chidi because of his indecisiveness and Jason because of his Obliviousness) and 3.Tahani had bad intentions and good actions (cause all she did was for fame and attention)....

Tahani's test is so wild when you really think about it. The goal is to get through the red door without opening any others. Presumably the closer Tahani gets to the red door, the more tempting the names on the plaques become. When Tahani stops at her parents' door, she looks down the hallway and from her perspective we see the red door and two other doors left. One door has a plaque and the other doesn't. Since these two doors are right next to the red door, they are presumably even more tempting than Tahani's parents' door. The door with the plaque is probably Kamilah, considering how much of their lives were spent in competition against each other. But what about the unmarked door? Why doesn't it have a name? Who is inside that room?

I think I would like this show a bit more if Jason and Chidi were less all over the place as characters. Sometimes Jason seems just a bit slow and thoughtless, sometimes he seems like he has an actual learning disability. And Chidi’s test was to pick a hat! Not solve some difficult moral conundrum. A hat.
@ss.surprise
@ss.surprise 4 года назад
That is kind of the point. Jason's weakness is a lack of self-control and forethought leading to him being thoughtless - he doesn't think things through or stop to just... think. In general. And at times, he will even follow an impulse despite not wanting to do that thing because he doesn't think enough to realise that... he doesn't have to do it. His moments of insightfulness show he is not incapable of thinking things through but he rarely ever does - he gets so caught up in emotions at other times that he doesn't question his ideas or words or the consequences or how it hurts others. He needs to slow down and take his time to think to come to good decisions - when he shows empathy by relating anecdotes, he tends to do this better, but letting his impulses guide him all the time is bad as he needs to think things through more. And Chidi has crippling indecisivenness when there are multiple options because he overthinks which leads to him never making an actual choice, hurting himself and others in the process. He understands morals. He could pass any test on morals. His overthinking is his major flaw. Give him a decision between two approximately equal things, and he agonises on it, until he runs out of time to choose. He considers things so deeply and for so long, that it paralyses him. Unless someone relentlessly pushes him to choose, he debates and debates and debates. In contrast to Jason, Chidi needs to let his impulses direct his choices more because he spends so much time thinking for a choice he doesn't even make in the end half the time and not following through on things he wants to do the other half of the time because again, he overthinks it until he paralyses himself into being unable to do it.
