As a dane I approve of the Symfony recommendation! -I actually saw them perform it live at a music festival years back, where they also played alot of other famous scifi and movie themes. -It was an amazing concert. The musicians were divided into several small one foot high stages spread out amongst the audience, so we could walk around watching them sing and play close enough to touch them. When they finished the first number the crowd went insane with roars and clapps and you could actually see the musicians being shocked by the reaction since that is NOT normal when they play in great musichalls. Foar a short while they felt like rockstars! I will never forget that experience!

I love the scene with Tuco's brother, completely altering our perception in a few seconds. This was part of the new generation of Anti-hero's vs the classic good/bad guys of the past. The characters are all morally ambiguous following their own internal codes. Characters like Han Solo and Dirty Harry followed this trend into other genres.

I had seen this movie many times and knew it was coming, but she didn't and the reaction was real. I do think Tuco is the deepest and most in-dept character in this movie. The blend of visuals, music, and pacing are outstanding. One of the greatest things about this movie is that lack of reliance on dialogue. You can stack all of the dialogue together and it may take up 10 pages of script. The rest is ALL composition, framing, set design, camera angles, music, and editing. A true cinefiles treasure. Besides that fact that it redefined the Western, Sergio Leone's filmmaking style was a true one of a kind. Be sure to watch all of his other films.

The music in this film is the fourth main character. Morricone drove the music hard. It was up front most of the time driving a scene, which is why the three main songs, the opener, Ecstasy of Gold, and The Trio (final gunfight) are so memorable. They stand out, mainly in the usage of various instruments you don't often hear in a western, and in how punctuating they are. The guitar and chimes are so hard as to extend into distortion. In the case of Ecstasy it seems to reflect Tuco's pulse-pounding Gold-Fever on the rise.

This was terrific. I remember the first time I watched this movie around 45 years ago, and I had a similar reaction as you did when Tuco stumbles into the cemetery and Morricone's beautiful song The Ecstasy Of Gold begins to play while Leone tracks Eli Wallach (Tuco) running through the cemetery faster and faster, eventually blurring, searching for Arch Stanton's headstone. It had a deep emotional effect on me (it still does), and it was the first time I realized the true power that film and music combined can have on one's "soul" (technically it was the second, as the "stairs" scene in Potemkin had moved me when I was only 5 or 6, but that was more visual then musical). Of course, in the 1970's. there was no internet, and I didn't realize that Leone and Morricone had this same effect for millions of others, I naively thought it was just me who was moved so strongly by it, as I had no knowledge of the "film world' at that time. I was just a boy watching movies on channel 5 out of New York City while enjoying the fascinating new cable TV (a whopping 15 channels that we thought was like Disneyland compared to the 4 we used to have) living upstate. So great to see new generations of beautiful young people like yourself enjoying that moment today, and I'm sure when you're my advanced age and I'm long gone, that some young person will get the same emotional reaction as they see that scene for their very first time. Heck, if human beings are still around, someone will get the same type of reaction seeing that scene for the first time 100 years from now. I recently saw Erich Von Stroheim's classic silent movie Greed (1924) for the first time, and that ending was also extremely powerful, even at almost 100 years old. Great film, music, literature, and art is truly timeless.

Regarding Clint Eastwood as an actor, I recall an interview from years ago with John Milius in which he discussed the subject. Milius worked (uncredited) on the script for “Dirty Harry” (1971). As I recall, he said that Eastwood asked him not to write a lot of dialogue for him, as that wasn’t really his strong suit. “I stare real good,” he quoted Eastwood as saying. I wish I could find that interview now but have not been able to thus far. In any case, that always suggested to me that Eastwood knew what his strengths were as an actor and how to play to them.

Trivia: Eastwood's squint is due to an allergy to horses. The exposure to them makes his eyes itch.

You might enjoy the Danish National Symphony doing this music. It is loads of fun watching this really serious group having fun, and the soprano singer going "Wah, wah, wah". The best western ever made, and one of the best movies all-time, by this same director, "Once Upon a Time in the West," The western is a form, like a sonnet. Within the rigid form of time, place, characters, sets, costumes and so on, you can tell any kind of a story you want. There are coming-of-age stories, love stories, revenge stories, comedies . . .Absolute freedom within a standard frame.

One of my favorite TGTBATU theories is that it’s really a prequel to Eastwood’s first two “man with no name” movies (“Fistful of Dollars” and “For a Few Dollars More”) because he doesn’t don his classic poncho until the last act.

Fun Fact. For the Bluray restoration, a few scenes that didn't make it in the original film were added. These scenes contained no recorded dialogue. Clint and Eli were still alive, so they recorded the needed dialogue themselves. Lee van Cleef had died many years ago, so they used an impersonator for him. You can hear in the first added scene, where Tuco talks to the chicken, that his voice is of a much older man. He sounds more like when he played Don Altobello in the Godfather 3, then he sounds like Tuco.

*If this had been an American Western, Tuco would've found the grave in the cemetery in NO time. But Leone wisely stretches it out here, letting it play, letting Tuco search with that incredible score. I also love that many of the filming locations still exist. The actress playing Bill Carson's girl told Lee Van Cleef to really hit her, but he refused.
