In 1988, John MacArthur’s book The Gospel According to Jesus stirred no small amount of controversy. By simply looking at what Jesus meant when he said follow me, the book exposed more than one false version of the gospel prominent among evangelicals. I was a false convert for decades. A head knowledge without repentance. I was self-decieved thinking grace covers a lifestyle lacking repentance. Now, I happily throw away my life of sin and following my Lord Jesus Christ. Being born again is a radical change that is a total gift of God. Obedience in the will of God is the only way to live. Deny yourself and tell everyone the Gospel of God and beg them to repent and run to Christ who is the only way to escape from the coming eternal wrath of God Almighty.

Just my opinions here. Ive never heard these thoughts from any preacher or teacher but here goes. I believe the biggest problem to be that the people of our nation have never lived under a true king or royalty of any sort. We dont fully grasp servanthood or complete obedience to dictates of the 'Lord'. We dont fully grasp going into the 'throne room', Heb 4:16. Weve never had anyone sitting on a throne. Im not putting this very well. But i hope my point isnt lost. We are satisfied with saying the words but dont really comprehend the Lordship and majesty we are to give ourselves to completely. Being slaves has such a negative vibe to it in our country. Moreso perhaps than any other nation, and certainly removed from the biblical use.

Dr. MacArthur is going to an extreme. The good news of the grace of God is simple enough for a child to believe it. Of course, a man who is truly regenerate will do good works, but MacArthur's presentation sounds like faith plus ➕️ something else is required for salvation. For the record, the Free Grace movement, i.e., Zane Hodges, Bob Wilkin, John Neimela, Fred Chay, Charlie Bing, and David Anderson are in error as well because they go to the other extreme.

In Luke 9:23 to 27, our Lord and our God is describing the enviable reality of all those who are justified before God, the chosen, the sheep, bride-body of Christ, disciples of Messiah and men born from above. Which is, those that are saved will suffer and do good works (cross reference Eph. 2:8-10). The thing that MacArthur and other Lordship Salvation proponents forget is that believers mature in Grace. At the time of conversion you don't perfectly obey our savior. After the new birth you are continually made holy until the time of glorification. Along the way you can, tragically, stumble and lose your way, but the Lord will enviablely find you and pick you up. Does that make sense?
