I would contend you trust it because of testimony, and the laws provide supplemental reasons for justifying that belief and makes it so you don't have reasons to doubt it. But if we treat testimony as guilty until proven innocent, it would change so much about the way we live our day to day lives. We honestly all take for granted how much we trust testimony until we think about it and take time to appreciate it. You learned English based on testimony. You trust that people make the correct sounds and use the correct symbols to correspond to the correct objects. You trust teachers, manufacturers, etc. It's such a ubiquitous part of our day, we almost never think about it. But it's so integral to our knowledge. We believe the accuracy of food labels because we know that there are laws requiring them to be accurate; that the government tests food to assure this accuracy; that companies that fails to provide accurate information face large fines; and that the government regularly catches companies that violate these laws. Your claim of authorship depends on a single, third-hand at best, testimony from 100 years after the fact. That patently does not compare with the available support for food label accuracy. We believe in testimony for reasons based on evidence: We have personal knowledge of the person giving the testimony. I accept the statements of my partners because they don't lie. We have corroboration of that testimony. Five of my neighbors say a truck hit a car in front of the house. We have evidentiary corroboration of the testimony. My neighbor says it's raining; I go outside and water is falling from the sky. We accept a banal claim because iit is likely. I tell you that it snowed last January 1st in Buffalo NY. You would likely accept that because it is a common and typical occurrence. Your claim to testimony has none of these attributes. It is a single source; you have no knowledge of the veracity of the source; you have no evidence supporting the claim; the claim is not banal or typical.
