- Watch my latest history documentary here:- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c3Hq6UaFQqk.html It's been a while since I've done a Romans video. So naturally I decided to tackle the most challenging of all subjects. The Fall of the Western Roman Empire. This is going to be a lengthy series, probably taking years to fully finish, but eventually we will follow the Goths along with a host of other factions all the way from their early roots beyond the frontier to the deposition of the last Roman Emperor in 476 AD. Hopefully it'll tie in nicely to my other videos on the early Middle Ages. Don't forget to like, subscribe and share if you like what you see, and let me know what moments, characters, battles you are looking forward to! (For me it's all about the Huns... )

What shocks me is the fact that the Goths presented here are looking like they are Dacians from the Trajan's column. The way they are dressed, armed and the dragon from the shield (old Dacian wolf) seems to be open a gate long time closed. Have the Dacians (called Gets by the Greeks) and the Gots something in common?

The goths own story is that they came from Scandinavia as did some of the other tribes that moved south and south-east. They even had contact with their kinsmen in what was to become Sweden as late as in the 9th century. There are regions in Sweden today called Västergötland, Östergötland and Gotland that has been around since the before the romans.

Your videos are always good, but I have a minor ''complain''/correction: this isn't a statue of Themistius at 2:21, it's a statue of Socrates placed outside the (modern) Academy of Athens (I don't know if there is a statue or a kind of picture of Themistius anywhere, I couldn't find any). But, as I said, that's just a minor ''complain''... Keep up the good work.

Hi there. Just want to say great job your doing with all the videos. I really enjoy them. I play these while i work and it really helps me pass my day. I want to add a little bit of constructive criticism here. At 3:20 you have a picture of a river which I think you mean to represent the Danube frontier. On closer look it seems like this is from SE Asia or may be South America. The palm trees and water buffalo give it away =P. I know its hard to find stock photos but I just wanted to point it out. Other than that keep up the good work!

Great video! It might just be that the Decline and Fall is and will remain the most discussed topic of all time. For my part, I cannot see how any of the "Old School" hypotheses, such as the rise of Christianity, or the idea of the "loss of the old martial spirit", still hold any weight. I think it is time for a more nuanced examination than Gibbon allowed. I did not know about the establishment of pseudo-Roman villas within the lands of the Goths, which is a very interesting thing to learn. I would be interested in knowing how likely it was that this was solely a Roman development beyond the borders at the hands of Goth admirers of Rome, or whether it was something which occurred under the auspices of the Hellenistic Bosphoran Kingdom, which had a much longer history of "civilizing" in the lands beyond the Danube. It might also have been nice to know more about the Sarmatian peoples, who don't often receive much in the way of attention, being more generally overlooked in favor of the Huns and Hephthalites. I think it might be worth incorporating, after the next episode which will surely describe Adrianople (Yay!), information on the split of the Empire, and the distinct characteristics of East and West, of their strengths and weaknesses and other important issues which arose during this timeframe, and how the gulf between the two divisions of the Empire was important in the formation of modern Eurasia, and how this cultural gulf accelerated the decline and fall. But of course that's just a suggestion. Once more, this was an awesome video!

David Hume I don't think so. Their strongest enemy was Attila, and while he could be blamed for causing the population movements which caused the collapse of the Imperial administration, he wasn't the cause of the final fall, which happened completely internally.
@TheSamuraijim87
@TheSamuraijim87 6 лет назад
Shhh Growing was it truly being 'denied' to the west? It's important to consider just how exceptionally thin the Greeks were stretched at times. The deeds of Justinian, the (extremely tenuous) stability of the Danube frontier, and the various peace treaties with the Sassanians were bought with utterly colossal amounts of gold and manpower. So it isn't certain that even if the East was still unified with the west, that Greek resources would have gone west.

At 28:00 you mention population increase and hard winters, that began an exodus southward. Perhaps unknowingly, you have stumbled upon a natural occuance . The cyclical Maunder Minimum , where sunspot activity dramatically decreases, therefore reducing suns energy output. Its not just hard winters but cool summers that cause crop failure and starvation. Interestingly, we are again entering that cycle currently.

With respect, I feel it may have been a mistake to start with a "civilised Rome was surrounded by barbarians who fed off their scraps" approach. You eventually acknowledge that Goths served in the Roman army, but maybe you should have started there. The irony of the invasion of Rome was that it was achieved, not by completely alien barbarians, but by armies that came from surrounding kingdoms modelled on Rome, led by soldiers that had trained and served under Roman banners. Rome "fell" because the invaders were led by different armies with different motives, some simply to sack, others to set up individual kingdoms rather than maintaining the enormously complex administrative structure of empire.
@OrchestrationOnline
@OrchestrationOnline 6 лет назад
One of the biggest problems I see in history concern the Goths is that the classic historians (including contemporary Romans) made no distinction between predation and invasion. The first impression of Goths was of ruthless raiders essentially carrying out acts of land piracy. As you observe, following their decisive defeat, the Goths came to respect Rome more as a civilisation that they could emulate - and eventually conquer and reshape with themselves as rulers. But that second act was very different from the first, and when historians don't draw a line between the two, the historical record becomes a garbled mess.

There's a great doc here on YT about how malaria contributed to the fall. It came on the ships crossing the Med from north Africa, first devastating key agricultural communities on the coast. With no one to work the fields, food shortages were the immediate effect, especially for the Legionnaires. As we know from Napoleon, armies march on their stomachs. The disease quickly spread north, and they were helpless against it. It killed ruthlessly, no respecter of persons or class. This is a relatively new discovery, but they've found quite a bit of supportive evidence. It makes sense that some outside force was working against the mighty Romans, to cause such a fall to technologically inferior people. It was said when Rome fell, it was like the mother of the earth had died, that's how far reaching their influence was. Fascinating topic, I wonder what civilization's fall will be studied 1000 years from now, though I'm sure they'll still be scrutinizing the Romans as well.

The German Goths had crossed the Danube as early as 240 AD. when Gordian III faced them. Their target was the provinces of Mysia, Pannonia and Thrace. In 280 AD the emperor Provos allowed them for the first time to settle en masse in Thrace. 100,000 German Goths then settled there. Their goal in the next century and until 400 AD. was to conquer Constantinople, so they were defeated.

At min. 17:28, 23: 43, 26: 30 you used pictures of the Dacians on the Trajan's column, built by Apolodor of Damascus, at the request of Emperor Trajan. Those are Dacians or geti , not Goths. In 625 spiral images are presented the two wars with the Dacians 101-102 and 105-106. In Dacia the use of the Latin language from then until today continued. Romania remained an island of Latinity in a sea of Slavic peoples. Those who remained north of the Danube were the Dacians and the Roman veterans of the legions of Gemina and Macedonica. Dacians were a name given by the Romans to those who lived in Dacia. The Greeks said Geti to those who lived in Dacia. Some historians have altered a letter, and Geti have become Goti. The Dacians and Getae must be removed from history and replace with Goti ( Goths).

Carlo Troya historian from 1784-1858 and Prime Minister of two Sicilies Kingdom in his book Hystory of Italy in the Middle Ages (8700 pages) more than 3500 pages are about the Goths. In volume II (1) Eruli e Goti he published an Appendix, Fasti Getici o Gotici (A Getic or Gothic History), volume II(2) contains another annex, Paralipomeni a Fasti Getici o Gotici (Daco-Getae-Normand Facts), basically dismantles the greatest error of ancient history (Tacitus and Pliny the Younger), namely that both branches of Goths, the Visigoths and Ostrogoths were of Germanic origin. While the Geto-Goths were guided by the harmonious Belagine laws inspired by Deceneus, Germanic tribes used a method of pricing a person in case of reward, guidrigildo or wergild, a savage procedure in Geto-Goths view. Also were very different in language, building knowledge of architecture, music, medicine, etc. But Goths incorporates in time some Germanic tribes like Vandals and Borgognons. Not to mention the Caracalla edict from 209-211 after murdering his brother Geta along with other 20k supporters, that damnatio memoria of the name Geta, Gete was forbidden to use so Geta, Gete became Goth.

Hey man, As usual, great video and narration. I enjoy the slower and rested style you have. May I suggest you start posting these as podcasts too? I listen to your videos while working, but obviously can't look at the screen, so in podcast style and so far, it hasn't affected my experience at all. It seems like an easy way to expand your audience. Cheers, This is Barris!

70 million total, right? Rome itself seeing its peak with a 1 million population, if I'm not mistaken. Meanwhile, in 2017, satellite imagery discovered a "Central American" city, lost under the jungle overgrowth, with over 60,000 structures, advanced roads and paths, capable of supporting 60 MILLION, alone. So, while stats and records may be accurate, the actual narrative, historically, is frivolous and ignorant.

Most writers place the fall of the western half of the Roman Empire far too late, when the final Roman Emperor was deposed by the Germans. But there had been no government or civil order in the Empire for a century before that, the title emperor was completely empty. Crossing the Rhine was the beginning of the end, and the sack of Rome can be considered the end. The Middle Ages began immediately, with the gradual desertion of the cities that were no longer safe to live in.

@David Bond The three most important surviving histories of the Goths in late antiquity are those by Jordanes, Isidore of Seville, and Procopius,in these primary sources the Getae /Dacians appear called as the goths and vice versa..modern historians ignore these sources calling them wrong but still use them to build their own propaganda around them for their own nationalistic agenda .

@Marcus Cornelius if the Roman Empire was dumb enough to (try to) coup democracy in Dacia by forcing the parties to unite _just to overthrow the country to replace it with the Spanish Monarchy_ ..then _disrespecting them is not even possible_ Some things or failed plans are so *inferior* you cannot _"disrespect"_ them.. just like you cannot 'disrespect' trash, _or taylor swift_ Something first needs to have _dignity_ ..to be 'respected', so it needs to be respected.. before it's possible to disrespect it You cannot disrespect something that doesn't respect itself. To do so would be _lack of self-respect_

Love the idea of the video, so thumbs up :). Still there are 3 things I would like to point out: 1. You kept saying that the barbarians north of the Danube had little knowledge initially of the Roman way of life. But there was the Dacian tribes / kingdoms for a few hundred years which were in contact and emulated in a certain extend the Romans, then there was Dacia as a Roman province, etc; 2. Beware of the pictures showing Goths, as the one presented by you show a warrior with a shield on which is depicted the Dacian / Getae tribes, which were there before the Romans and the Goths, and due to the name and location similarity wrecked havock in the minds of the early historians (of course some of them were still living there once the Goths arrived, only adding to the confusion); 3. The war that broke the balance in the region is called the Marcomannic Wars, not Macromannic. Besides these mentions, can't wait for the next part to appear. :)
@HistoryTime
@HistoryTime 6 лет назад
Hey there. Thanks! 1. I was stressing the standard Roman viewpoint, not the actual reality. Some 'Barbarians' had a lot of contact and knowledge of Romans, as is shown later throughout the video. 2. There were only a handful of copyright images on the internet. 3. True! Next episode is a goodun!

_Prosperity_ . . . careful when you hear "peace and prosperity" for *most* citizens. Citizenship didn't come as a birthright at a given location. Citizenship was inherited. Free parents. You're free. Enslaved parents. Same for your. Even now the US is described as prosperous, but it doesn't feel prosperous to the majority, who worry about paying bills, month to month - around 40 percent of American citizens.

In some sense, the cultural impact of the ancient Romans echoes to this very day. It’s in many of our languages, religions, traditions, and serves as the foundation of modern cities. There was greatness in the human potential of the ancient Romans. We look back on them and realize what humanity can accomplish when we form a civilization that aspires for greatness.

I love gothic architecture too! However, I would want to point out that it has approximately as much to do with the actual Goths as the modern subculture has. The term originated in the Renaissance as a derogatory one - basically dismissing the style of the High and Late Middle Ages as barbaric. This was the beginning of a long process of misappropriating the word "gothic", which started getting weird during the Romanticism.
