For more than 100 years, Native children were forcibly taken from their homes and relocated to church or state-run boarding schools. The result of this government program - with the motto “kill the Indian and save the man” - amounted to cultural genocide. For Dakota language teacher Redwing Thomas, saving his Native language today is a matter of resistance. “There's mass amounts of abuse that has happened in those schools, and that's almost directly why we don't know our language today.”
