One thing that a person did that helped when the tornado came through my area was to bring a portable chain saw sharpener and did several peoples saws. his was setup in the back of his truck and was helpful when the saws got dull.

Sounds like an impossible, helping involves work, if it doesn't affect them why should they help, so you pay people to help. Where do you get the money to help? You're asking for a methodology that won't work because people have their own problems with their own solutions. It's not nice to hear but it is true.
@Poppy-mi4sf
@Poppy-mi4sf Месяц назад
@@cindyengle5425You should expend your energy on complaining about the tax breaks that billionaires and corporations got under Trump. There’s a lot more money there than aid to Ukraine. The federal government always comes in because most state government don’t give a shit about you. Your state government should stop spending your money on shipping people in busses to other states for political gains. You put abbot in office now you will see how he blames everyone but itself.

Here is what i have done in the past. 1. Make a list of all you may need and take extra supplies. 2. Record serial numbers of all the equipment you take. 3. Put a private serial number in a hidden place in your equipment. 4. Plan and build your own first aid kit. 5. If you are affiliated with a church, have the particular church give you credentials as a representative of that church. This should include photo id and then copies sent to the Sheriff's Department as part of a relief team. This will help with credibility all the way round.

Great information
@P_RO_
@P_RO_ Месяц назад
Instead of a hidden 'serial number' write your driver's license number (include the state) and your phone number. Also spray paint spots on your stuff using an oddball shade of paint nobody else, getting into recessed screwholes and places it's hard to clean away. Use only that one color of paint for everything. If you plan to keep the equipment forever, scratch or engrave the numbers visibly outside on something crucial to the equipment, not some removable cover. put your first name and phone number in a very visible place with permanent magic marker too. Have copies of your proof of ownership in a hidden box or book you can produce quickly, and have the originals stored securely at home. I'm in the construction industry where we have too many thieves,and these techniques work best for deterrence as well as getting your goods back to you faster when they're found. Authorities can quickly track your DL number and anyone can phone you if the goods come up for sale. Courts want original receipts but LE Officers can accept copies for investigation purposes.

When my niece’s house was blown away with only the slab left in the Moore storm in 1999 I sent as much cash as I could afford right away to her place of business. She thanked me so much because their bank accounts were frozen and they needed cash for everything from diapers to food to basic clothing. Looters are always there unfortunately, that was even the case as far back as 1955 when my husband’s hometown of Blackwell was hit when he was a kid.

I worked federal disaster assistance for eight years. The one thing I would tell homeowners who had damages is your insurance adjuster is NOT YOUR FRIEND. They are NOT going to do what is in your best interest. IT IS YOUR JOB to protect your interests! Remember, an insurance “settlement” is just that. It means you and the insurance company agreed and settled. If you DON’T agree….DON’T take the settlement. If you’re having trouble with your insurance company, CALL the Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner.

Sean, good information. We had a tornado hit my town several years ago, nothing like Sulpher. What i learned is even if you are a lady and if you have a puckup yruck, go to the organization point and offer your truck to haul personal items as they are pulled out of houses to take yo a secure location. I did that and helped an older man as his furniture and personal goods were pulled out of his house, he was just going to sit outside with all his stuff all night until i offered my yruck. I took him with me where we delivered it to a family members home about 15 miles away. He was very thankful. Yhe point is, you may not can do physical work but if you have a truck and can drive it, that can be very helpful as well.

Our friends, a paraplegic husband and his wife caregiver,lived in Homestead, and when Andrew hit, they called to tell us that the husband was in the house with no electricity, and couldn’t get out because all the doors were blocked with debris, and the garage door had buckled, and wouldn’t open. The call came at 8am, and by noon, J was on his way with filled gas cans, chain saws, pry bars, etc. He drove 36 hours, and the first checkpoint, he showed his retired military ID, and the rescue supplies, explained why he was going to Homestead and was allowed to pass. The checkpoint guard notified the next checkpoint, and after the first one he slowed and, and was waved through. When he got to Homestead, it was midnight, and the only light anywhere came from the hospital, that was on generator power. J had to get to within three blocks of the hospital to know exactly where he was. Three days later, J and our friends began the drive to our house, in north central Arkansas, for a three week stay, until the electricity was restored to their home. Three months later, J and I drove to Homestead, and did all the small jobs that had to be done around their property, after the major work had been done. That was the hardest I had ever worked in my life, three weeks of working outside from “See to can’t see” and then doing inside work for another two to four hours. At that time, I didn’t have any skills with power tools, and mostly acted as a “stay and fetch it” or holding the dumb end of the measuring tape. Now, I am 80, and have more skills, and have my own power tools, and feel like an awesome old lady every time I plug in one of my tools!

Yes, if one does not live in the immediate area, wait until the call goes out for volunteers. Please Please don't self deploy to disaster area. Get hooked up with a FEMA or a VOAD (Voluntary Organization Active in Disaster) organization. Now days because of scammers and dangers lurking after a disaster, local authorities won't let anyone in the area, unless part of one of the groups mention above. These people are vetted and trained.

During Katrina hundreds of professional rescue teams from other cities came in but they didn't bring food or water for themselves. They deployed themselves and wound up being more victims that FEMA had to find out how to house and feed. Professionals should not even go in unless they contact the incident management team first. Civilians wanting to help out need to wait a few days and then contact whomever is the management body and tell them what you are going to do and what your capabilities are.

The immediate aftermath is no time or place for rubberneckers or religious tourists. You can -pray- from where you are. If you're not an active part of a coordinated solution, you are part of the problem. Just another person to feed, house, and try to keep safe.

I totally understand. Back in 1980 I worked for the phone company and we had to go in and work the aftermath of a tornado that was 1 mile wide and stayed on the ground for 5 miles right through Wichita Falls Texas. Everything you said is right on point! I might even mention I was the first woman to work construction for SWBT! I was a cable splicer for 30 years!!

Kudos to your humanitarian efforts. In 2011 friends and I headed from South Central Missouri too Joplin the morning after. And yes it was too early but along the way we cleared out many stores of bottled water. That was well-received immediately. We brought our chainsaws and I had my dump truck and backhoe. Dump truck stayed parked a couple days but the backhoe was put to work clearing main roadways so crews could get around. I have seen and experienced much in my life. Still haunted from the images seen. Some of that rain has been coming our way. No complaints after 2 years of drought. Hopefully I can cut enough hay to fill the barns back up this year. I had just enough reserve. But.... some neighbors were paying upwards of $100 Bale. That adds up quick.

To help out you can join the Disaster Relief for the state. The Southern Baptist Convention for each state has a group of volunteers trained and specialized in specific duties. An email is sent out and usually within 24-48 hrs a group of 10 or so folks are on the road. Chainsaw crew, mobile kitchen trailer crew, laundry crew, communications trailer, etc.

The storm chasing scammers are generally the Irish Travelers/Gypsys. I’m a retired county Emergency Manager. In a small town your list is OK. But it’s better if you are part of a recognized VOAD (Voluntary Organization Active in Disaster). These volunteers have already been background checked, they are trained under the National Incident Management System. That is free online training from FEMA and is required if it is declared a federal disaster. I saw the “2nd disaster” in the Expo Center there, that is the clothing donations being accepted locally. Don’t do it. Many people with a generous heart clean their closets and send their trash. I can go on and on. When you go, take food water and fuel for yourself for at least 7 days. There are many organizations that would love your help and make you a qualified volunteer. You did good Dutch!

When I was displaced from a house fire, I didn't care if it was clothes from the back of someone's closet.. I had to escape in my pajamas since I was woken up to the room next to mine on fire. In true times of need, the kindness that someone is even willing to do that much actually really matters.
@grannygoes
@grannygoes Месяц назад
@@kellymarie80 in the end, they will end up putting the majority of what they received in a dumpster. As soon as the Salvation Army or Red Cross comes, they will get cash cards to purchase new ones. Yes, fires are horrible and instant help is needed. I’m sorry for your loss.

I saw this when I worked Joplin. It was 90 degrees and people where sending down winter coats and clothes. Soiled or infested with bugs. Yes, please before you donate, check with A VOAD member see if they are working the disaster and they will let you know what is needed. Most times, just donating money helps the best, as then it can help jump start the local economy by purchasing many items locally. This also save on shipping /transportation cost and storing. ( I have worked in the Emergency Disaster Management field for some 30 years, both the government and the VOAD side. FEMA is not your enemy, they truly try to help. However as one person posted earlier, it's the citizens that does a lot of the clean up and recovery work through volunteering and and donating.

Remember, most local first responders (cops and firefighters) live right where the disaster occurred too. They have their families, houses, and stuff affected just like the people they’re trying to serve. Same with the power company employees too. It takes everyone to be patient with the outside help that is coming. Organization is everything when triaging the damage and getting proper resources to get a job done safely. Life first and then the other stuff. Besides manpower, daylight is the most valuable resource.

Thanks for the Great List you compiled! People like you and other RU-vidrs in the area are a godsend. We also had an EF 3/4 tornado on 3/31/23 in Wynne Arkansas. It was devastating to say the least. I’d like to add a couple suggestions for your list. Those that are still able to live in a damaged home should expect emergency personnel to come to your house and bang on your door and flash lights in your windows. With thieves coming around it’s disconcerting to see hear this, especially at night. The people should identify themselves. If not don’t answer the door and be prepared for unexpected circumstances. My 2nd suggestion. Our town issued free permits to all construction workers, tree companies and other people offering services. That was to prevent scammers and advantage seekers. It worked too. You were spot on with your other tips. I was up most of the night looking for stories about the Sulfur area as I also watch Arms Family and Jimmy Houston and knowing they have friends and relatives in Sulfur. God Bless everyone there!

Bring extra chains and sharpening items for your saws. We found pruners and bow saws to be helpful too. Also Contractor bags for debris. We brought old buckets to put nails in that we picked up with our long handled magnets. Make sure you have spare tires for your truck and trailer. Service centers may not be available. If you have a portable generator it could be helpful. Plastic totes and bins are great donations to help out the people trying to collect their belongings. It was sad to see so many things destroyed by rain and mold while people scrambled to pick up afterwards.
