I hold the same position for all of Meta’s products (Metaverse, Facebook, and Instagram) although there are more pertinent problems with the first two, but I disavow TikTok as much as I disavow Instagram. I’m *all* for banning social media, because I generally hold the position that it is terrible in its current form. However, the reason I don’t wholesale advocate for hitting everything “social media” with the Bethesda Ban Hammer™️ is multifaceted : 1) social media, in and of itself isn’t bad, rather it’s the human aspect where we’ve rapidly shifted to using social media as the means by which we communicate, instead of treating it as supplementary, 2) said aspect funnels, by design, to promote people to seek external validation (like “likes”) and discourages unpopular opinions because people are not naturally equipped to being criticized by dozens to potentially upwards of millions of people (which, though I don’t have evidence, I’d imagine played a major role in the rise of “ironic” culture, as hiding ideas behind irony shields people from irony, and combined with how we’ve functionally replaced personal for online communication, carries over to real life), 3) promoting a wholesale ban in a comment, purposely without much nuance, quickly runs down the slippery slope argument, making it pretty easy to just shrug off if not engaged with. Absolutely agree the onslaught of tiktok has noticeably affected my friends’ brains and how well theyre able to pay attention to something. And when they’re bored, nothing fills the void in their unstimulated brain like rapid fire shit tier videos. I wish theyd want to engage with people and activities around them instead. Its the sad and deliberate destruction of the youth. My buddy can barely watch a movie anymore without pulling out his phone and watching tiktok.

It got shut down due to high competition, Tiktok deffinitly deserves to be shut down because of stupid trends that were turning children into criminals.
