This is the final drive from the Divisional Playoffs between the New Orleans Saints and the San Francisco 49ers. This should go down as the part 3 of the epic Playoff catches that have happened in Candlestick Park during important come-from-behind wins in the last minute of the game, the first being Joe Montana to Dwight Clark against the Dallas Cowboys almost exactly 30 years prior to this catch, and the second being Steve Young to Terrell Owens with 8 seconds left on a very similar 3rd and 3 in the same endzone. There's 49ers magic happening, can't wait to see them next year!!!

I love how Alex Smith talked smack to the Saints while he was walking off. He's been a real humble dude his whole career while taking shots from every single angle. I don't think I could take half of what he took, and you never hear him complain about it. Not even once. I can't wait until next year to see Alex lead us to #6!!

Great point noticing the humility of Alex smith. He even gave the whole moment to Vernon. Everyone is praising Vernon for making the catch, but no shine at all for Alex making the throw. He played an amazing game that day. Tragic, as Alex Smiths biggest haters was his own fan base. I think the outcome would have been different if he started the Super Bowl instead of Kaepernick.
@Theempiresf49
@Theempiresf49 Год назад
@@andychu1549 to me without a doubt we would have won that Super Bowl if Alex was the quarterback yeah Kaepernick may have had a bigger arm and could run but Alex was a pure passer and at the end of that game when it came down to the goal line in the Super Bowl if Alex was the quarterback they get that touchdown
@dhz1824

Especially considering it was the infamous 'bountygate' where the Saints defense was purposefully looking for ways to target and injure Alex during the game, I'd be rightfully pissed too if I was him at that moment.

I remember seeing this and being so damn happy for Alex Smith and especially Vernon Davis. The career they had, the ups and downs, and to come through like that. I was happy for them both, even though Alex had suffered under coaches who didn't know how to play to his strengths and still came through. He proved a lot of doubters wrong with how he played in KC. Dont get me wrong, I wish we wouldve drafted Aaron Rodgers, but the dude had heart. And VD was just amazing. I loved that team. The players on Defense. My boy Pwill, Bowman, Cowboy, Whitner, Rodgers, Sopoaga, Ahmad Brooks, Parys Haralson, even Aldon Smith before he imploded his career. The offense: Frank Gore of course, Randy Moss, Crabtree, VD, Goodwin, Iupati, Delanie Walker, Boone. We had a damn good team. Shame we couldn't finish. Again.

10 years later and this still brings tears to my eyes. Smith to Davis as a duo was way WAY underrated. And its a shame Harbaugh bailed on Smith the next season after his concussion (when he was having a career year after improving his throwing mechanics). Right when Smith arrived and thrived, he got replaced. I thought it was a mistake the day Jim made the decision, and history still says it was a mistake. Smith ended up a 3 time pro bowler, Kap ended up out of the league. That team loved Alex, and they may have won it all with him.
@calzman

Couldnt agree more. Alex was ballin his ass off. This was Harbaughs biggest mistake. I bet no one in that locker room was more hungry for a championship than Alex Smith. I bet he would have done anything to win after all the shit he went through.

Funny reading all the pro kapernick comments and everyone hating on smith. What a bust. You see, Alex smith suffered and rose up from the depths and had the fortitude to succeed. Everything came too easy for kap. When adversity hit, he had no mental capabilities to handle it and thus floundered.

@joekaput747 7 лет назад
I live out here. I watch them week after week lose. I'm fully expecting a tie with the bears. I read the columns the sports writers write, and they all agree harbaugh was forced out. The rumors of him getting traded to Cleveland were the first signs. Then more and more leaks throughout the year until he was gone. The same with tomsula last year, and kaepernick earlier this year. While the official story is there was a "mutual parting of ways", everyone knows he was basically fired after week 13. Why would he agree to leave an nfl team that's only been winning since he got there? It's not like the saban situation where he was a bad nfl coach and left suddenly. Harbaugh was good, they were winning. Why else would he leave?

Brent Jones, Vernon Davis, and now George Kittle. 49ers always seem to have a great TE

as a 49ers fan, i'm so happy they are in the Super Bowl this year since the last time they made the Super Bowl which was in 1994, i was like 6 or 7 years old, didn't follow Sports then

Alex Smith is all sorts of jacked up after the play. I mean...I would be too, it's just awesome to see.

I was walking home waiting to get picked up from a tournament. And my family as well as i am are die hard Niners fans so i couldn't get a ride since they were watching it. So i told my friend to look up the score with his iphone. It was 29-32 and the Saints had the ball with 30 seconds left. I thought oh well they're just gonna take a knee and its over. Then i tell my friend to update it and the score was 36-32 and i just went CRAZY!!! I ran down the street screaming jumping up and down!

As a 49ers fan, that image of Gregg Williams slowly walking up and down the sidelines looking down will always remind me of the day that the 49ers returned to glory.

I love The Catch series. The best part about them is that all of them happen when the 49ers are at home, all three had different qb's throwing the ball, and all three of them happen on 3rd and 3. There's some magic there, I think.

All at home. All had some of the greatest quarterbacks and receivers in 49ers history on either end and the 3 greatest coaches in 49ers history (IMO). There is definitely some magic there.

There *was* some magic there. Candlestick is no more. I'm rooting for the colors, the ghosts of the past but the current ownership bears no resemblance to the days of glory and little chance to sustain any sort of winning culture. It's a shame, really.

I have an honorable mention for the Catch II, call it The Catch 1.5: The TD from Montana to Freddie Solomon (RIP) during the 1983 divisional playoff at home versus the very formidable Detroit Lions. They went up 24-23 and had to fend off a final Lions drive and a missed 43 yard FG from Eddie Murray.

I remember after scoring a big goal playing soccer, I ran to the sideline to hug my coach after celebrating w my teammates on the field. Sometimes you just wanna hug the coach.

"Great offense beats great defense." Plays like this one are why that saying exists.
