The system is designed to defeat single and group, stationary and moving, armoured and soft-skinned targets and engineer facilities by firing 120mm smoothbore and rifled mortars.
Gran kills stationary and moving targets by the first shot without fire adjustment. Targets located at a considerable distance from each other (up to 300 m) are killed at a single fire angle and without changing settings in the projectile.
Simultaneous fire by several mortars at several targets (without hampering each other's operation), a capability of firing with incomplete meteorological data, defeat of targets moving in defiles, located behind high crests or on reserve slopes of the terrain, and high-accuracy fire at night significantly enhance mortar effectiveness, especially in irregular terrain where the application of guns is complicated.
Gran system mobility is provided by specially designed portable automated fire control system that ensures round-the-clock targets detection and designation in hard-to-reach areas, topographical survey and orientation of fire position and command-observation post, automated computation and input of fire settings.
The analysis of Gran's combat efficiency shows that, featuring high capabilities and modest demand for resources and ammunition, it can ensure a high target kill level in conditions where conventional mortars and guns are actually ineffective.
The system comprises:
1) a 120mm guided HEF mortar projectile;
2) a propelling charge;
3) Malakhit automatic fire control system (FCS) comprising:
- laser designator-ranger (LDR) with a thermal imager
- commander's panel
- communication means kit
Basic Characteristics:
Maximum range, km 1.5 - 9
Caliber, mm 120
Weight, kg
projectile 27
warhead/explosive 11.2/5.3
Warhead HEF

Russians: We need javelin missile Russian engineers: We don't have work about javelin but we have motar launch missile , want try it ? Russians: Ok , they'll work
@dare2scheme904

Why would they need javelin when they produce more than 4 different types of guided ATGMs. Evidently they already took a ton of javelins already and don't need them

Actually this is more analogous to XM395 Precision Guided Mortar Munition. An analogue to the Javelin is not needed because they have RPG-29, 30 and 32 and they work just fine.

Guided mortar, if only we had that ability to do that 40 years ago, no wait...

This technology was being tested and refined in the late 80s/ early 90s by the Pentagon. Also under development back then was a GPS-guided round for the 120mm mortar. My specialty when I was active was the 81mm mortar. I don't know if these technologies were ever fielded. However, I'm sure the Russians have been busy with their system for a while also. Russian science and technology is pretty damn good, and considering they don't have the capital we have, they manage to come up with inexpensive innovations that make other countries take notice. It would be naive, even foolish, to count them out in any confrontation. They may not be on par with American technology in some fields, but I'm sure they exceed us in others. I don't care for politics. I'm sure Russians are like mostly everybody else: they go to work early in the morning to earn their daily bread; then they get home tired but ready to cook for their families. They worry about the same things we worry about, like health, taxes, rent, and all sorts of problems. I hate it that politicians can't find ways to overcome political differences. If we can look the other way how Saudi Arabia treats women and punishes severely even the most minute crimes (like cutting off the hands of somebody for stealing $5) then why can't we overlook fundamental differences with Russia. I guess oil is more important than human dignity. As an American veteran I cherish our freedoms and will defend them to the end so that my kids don't end up without the very freedoms our constitution grants us. But this doesn't make a Russians --or Chinese, or a N Koreans, or Venezuelans, etc.-- the objects of my hatred simply because they fall under a different political system, a system that I may actually detest. They are still human being and children of God.

+Miguel Rodriguez Haven't really heard anybody using these for mortars. I think if anybody wants to use guided precision rounds they go straight to heavy artillery rounds or aerial stuff like bombs or missiles. The thing is, if any of this adds any weight to mortar company they will be immediately rejected, since the whole point of mortars is to be dead simple and light weight. Mortars anyway shoot at such a short range and with such good accuracy that when I was in FO conscript training accuracy was not really problem. If they miss it is usually the FO messing up the targeting rather than the mortar missing by a mile. Unless you have something near a critical object you don't want to hit this is pointless. Otherwise you just fire couple extra adjusting rounds and hit the target dead center on the third round. If that doesn't work you just lob out more dirt cheap standard mortar rounds until you get a lucky hit. Only use I can see for these is hitting moving targets and there the problem is that the object can easily drive out of the guiding cone area. So you essentially need a moving vehicle for a target, however it can't move too much.

What did you expect? Did you think they stopped developing weapons when the Soviet Union collapsed? They're a world superpower, of course they're developing modern weapons.

Whatever people think a lot of Soviet/Russian designs are very good and often bright. The propaganda about the inferiority of their equipment is very dangerous as stupid. The US equipment is highly overrated. The Americans(military industry) is producing a product that can be sold for as much as possible, that needs parts as often as possible and service that is overpriced. Besides the US defense is VERY corrupted and the security of the troops are put asides as long they sell.

+Janusz Gluszak Russia is a better country to buy weapons from because U.S. uses way too much tech in a simple thing. Also India is the best country to make anything because the workers are efficient and it is very cheap
