Part IX of the tour and this video focuses on my bookcase where all the unfiled classic works reside. In this video, which will be the first of three or so, I go through all the Penguin Classics (black ones) and Modern Library editions contained thereon.
I mention some of my other videos during this one:
Reviews 6: Daisy Miller by Henry James • Reviews 6: Daisy Mille...
Reviews 11: Fifth Business by Robertson Davies • Reviews 11: Fifth Busi...
Reviews 13: Under the Greenwood Tree by Thomas Hardy • Reviews 13: Under the ...
Reviews 16: Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte • Reviews 16: Agnes Grey...
Reviews 31: Three novels by H.G. Wells • Reviews 30: The Time M...
Note: I said that Plutarch wrote his Lives in Latin, when he actually wrote them in Attic Greek. Apologies.

I meant to add that when "NGS." was translated into French, Gissing personally edited it down a fair bit, however his edited version isn't readily available in English as far as I am aware. Gissing admitted the original was made unnecessarily lengthy to 'fill out' 3 installments; as was often the norm at that time.

Yes, the 3-novel form, primarily driven by business model of the lending libraries, is perhaps the main reason that, despite the Victorian period being viewed as a 'golden age' for the novel, I don't really enjoy reading fiction from the period that much.

A thorough and fascinating survey of so much literature. Very thought provoking. Yes would be great to hear what you think of 'Riddle of the Sands' -the 1979 film is also worth a look.

Thank you, Michael! Another two parts to cover the rest of these classics, quite a task.

Interesting that you say it's either Dickens or Gissing. Many say it's either Dickens or Trollope. I'm currently reading my first Gissing, "New Grub Street" & you are right in saying it's slow going, hoping it will, as you suggest, gain some momentum.

Trollope has many fine qualities, but he does not have the intellectual heft or depth of sympathy for the downtrodden that one finds in Gissing. As for NGS, hopefully you stay with it; I wish I'd mentioned how fine a character the unscrupulous study in ambition Jasper Milvain is.

Great collections of classics! Thank you for this delightful Grand Bookshelf Tour. Makes one want to dive into these classics. Totally agree with you regarding Robertson Davies, and I thank you again for introducing this marvel of a novel in another video. The other two volumes from his Deptford Trilogy are excellent. I read Samuel Butler's book. The beginning is very good indeed; the rest is not as good, rather dull at times but still an interesting novel. I will watch this video again for references and reading suggestions. Loved and enjoyed it a lot. Thank you very much for sharing your collections of Penguin Classics and Modern Library.

I thought Master and Man was amazing, but I read two translations, and one was great and the other was very disappointing. We have to pick (one of) the right translator(s).

How interesting. Mine was translated by Paul Foote.

@@TheChannelofaDisappointedMan Mine by Roger Cockrell - the one I liked a lot (the other was in Hungarian, one of the first translations in Hungarian, and these early ones are less impressive imho)
