Wow what a beauty I dont if its me but theres something very nostalgic about seeing and hearing an old Grandfather clock, You know like someone was sitting in their home on Christmas eve listening to the same clock chime in the 1880s and these clocks are still working keeping time, And the skill of the man who built the clock, The fine and Intricate gears and movements Its Incredible If you think about it.
Important! If it hasn't worked in 15 years please have it cleaned and oiled, by doing that you will prevent unnecessary wear on the pivots, and holes, and gear teeth, and other parts. Thanks for posting, beautiful clock.
I don't know if my first comment posted. But as I said this clock has a beautiful sound that just doesn't seem to be matched by today's clocks, particularly the hourly strike!
Sometimes just need oiled or level'd off , they can be a pain I Know I have 6 Two are broken need new spring that hold the pendulum (suspension spring ) I built my 1st two from kits Emperor Clock company others i bought over last 30 years
@2000VR Yes I kept the clock. The old case of the movement broke (was a hang only box) so I kept it in a box before repairing. Meanwhile, the case, I popped an electronic one that rings every hour. It's so small.
You have to remove the old oil, very important, and you have to make sure the holes the gear pivots are in are not worn, or the gears will not mesh and the clock will thank fully stop more serious damage. I hope you get it to work.
Congrats on your clock Joe! This looks similar to my 1978 Howard Miller clock in a few ways. The pendulum, chains & weights look exactly the same. The case is similar w/ a few minor style differences. My hood is rounded rather than having finials. The clock face is extremely similar having the exact same numbers, markings & designs but w/ a few exceptions, 1- the moon phase dial has a different scene of a cabin by the water rather than the stars of yours. 2- I do not have switch right under the 12 position. 3 - I do have a switch at the 3 position for silent & 3 chimes It looks like there is a logo right under the number 12 on the clock face in your video but it is obscured by the hands. Probably not a Howard Miller but they might have shared some parts. Continued success with this beauty.
I just cleaned the movement out. Sheesh, more than 20 years without cleaning, result is dirty and oily hands. It now works like I made it work last year. I wonder if it will last a week.
Quite a surprise. My grandmother used to have a clock built in early 1980's. It stopped mainly because it wasn't oiled. When it was moved to the city I was now in, I oiled it, placed the chain and weights and to my surprise it started ticking. It stopped again 7 months later. I did everything I can but it's dead. I should have replaced the mechanism. I cannot repair it because no repairman who can repair old clocks are present these days.
And by the way, our clock also haven't functioned in more than a decade. Maybe your clock liked your office and the floor is smooth for it to go ticking.
How can chime choice affect my grandfather clock from working? It was working till my husband moved it off of Westminster and then it quit. I moved it back and it still not working.
Hey, I think I know what kind of clock it is. I kind of looked at the up-close shot of it. And I can kind of see through the hands the Ridgeway emblem. So, I'm now pretty sure that this is a Ridgeway clock.
Nice clock! Gotta love those vintage clocks! I think this sounds prettier than today's grandfather clocks (which still sound pretty, just not quite as beautiful as this). And the hourly chord is more musical, compared to the usual "dischordant" hourly strike heard on most of today's grandfather clocks. Is this a Westminster only, dual chime or triple chime clock?
Not sure if you’re still curious after 12 years, this particular clock is a Ridgeway from the late 70s/early 80s I’m guessing, almost 100 percent sure it’s powered by an Urgos triple chime movement based on the sound. Should play Westminster (in video) Whittington, and St. Michaels
Noah .. there can be a paranormal aspect . keep a open mind like ze clock could have sat dormant & unused but then suddely blast back into service for not one reason
