I really enjoyed this Gilbert. Thank you. Through the years we have played many games pertaining to ancient history. I guess that's why I enjoy your videos so much.

Based upon your review here and many others and the mystique around the series I have bought every volume in the series and am so excited to play starting with Alexander. I’ve been taking the rule book to work to read on breaks and watching people play here on RU-vid. I cannot wait to start. Interesting to hear which ones were your favorites

Thank you Michael. I think 'Stonewall Jackson's Way' is one of the best and a lot people would agree. I think the 'Gettysburg' Campaign makes the series really shine because of the wide open spaces which really highlight the game system. I personally like the 'Seven Day's Battles' a lot but it is in a very constricted space in this series and does not 'show off' the best features of the games. It is a fine series.

CoF is my favorite in the series so far - the sweeping movement of the Chariots is just impressive to watch. You need to give some of the chariot-heavy scenarios a shot, they're the most fun I've had with it. Gotta agree about Hoplite. The Persians are the interesting side to play; trying to figure out how to beat a Hoplite army at Marathon (or better yet Plataea) is where this one shines. The later scenarios are Hoplite vs. Hoplite, and I guess they're okay to watch, but it's the weakest that I've seen in the series. Not for any historical flaws, but for the gameplay aspect.

Another great job I am learning so much about what is out there through your shows.

Just surfed the web and I think I found them on some specialty site for the SPQR series. Another thing I did was load up the setups from Vassal and then print them out.

Don't know if review comments on videos this old but this was timely for me as I'm just beginning to explore GBOH. Not normally a tactical gamer but this series looks great. Just leaned the Men of Iron games which are excellent. I realize GBOH has a common gene pool with those games. I was going to go Simple but you've changed my mind and will dive into the reg rules. I'm pretty experienced so won't be an issue. We're about the same age and I sense similar in other respects. Allows enjoy you're well thought out episodes. Cheers!

I have been working through SPQR and having fun with it. Wish GMT would print the others. Really neat system.

Yes, I will have to give "Chariots of Fire" more play time. I only tried the 'Troy' scenario once and it is weak on chariots. I guess for me the "Roman" titles are the best. I just received "Cataphract" and would like to give a scenario or two of that a go. This series has hundreds of hours of playing time associated with it.

This is extremely useful thanks as these are on my wish list. Im trying to learn LaBatille Dresden and thought this would be easier, interesting its 30 page rules, LaBatille is also 30 page, though few illustrations. Is this game harder to learn than say GMT Musket and Pike series of games? I play that a lot and love that systen. LaBatille is far too complex though and even as a long time wargamer I struggle to grasp it so its almost unplayable. These seem playable to me. I really enjoy naval warfare so interesting you like the war galleys game for ancient naval battles, in general I dont know id people find it as fun as the land battles. Thanks for the enjoyable video!

Hello, great video! I recently picked up SPQR and both Caesar titles and can't wait to play them. In your video you said you printed out setups for specific battles, can you let me know where you printed these out from? Thank you!

Gilbert, where did you get those trays that fix so wonderfully in the GMT boxes? Great review as always. THX

GMT actually sells those trays. Just check out their website. I think you can purchase them in packages of 6.

I have Volume I to XIV and most of the expansions. I don't have the most recent versions of them. I also have and prefer SGBOH myself. I almost all of the C3I scenarios. I find Simple to be a lot less complex. I mean the rules are half of long.

Any suggestions on a nice way to set up the maps with plexiglass, etc for a reasonable cost?
@XLEGION1
@XLEGION1 6 лет назад
Sure, I just went to my local plastic specialty supply store and had them cut out a 24" x 36" piece. If you see some of my other videos the plexiglass-glass is often featured.
