Pubs are such a great tradition. In the States we just have bars that are just load and with no character. Looking forward to tipping a pint next year when I hope to visit. Cheers!
Yeah, I wondered if the list would include the Norfolk Arms. You did well getting around to so many locations. Fascinating check through of the old list. Thanks for the tour :)
We’ve got the same book ‘Pub Walks Along’ but our book is The Peddars Way and the Norfolk Coast Path. We followed the routes in the book way back in 1998/99 and as far as we know the pubs are all still open. We filmed the outside of one of pubs at Thornham in our Norfolk Coast Path walks (day 1) - this one has changed its name from The Kings Head to the Orange Tree… we thought that was a shame. An interesting post this one.
That was great Steve and a really good idea. Growing up I had 2 local pubs that basically I went to every day as it was part of the social scene of the 80’s and 90’s. Both of them are closed and boarded up and have been for years. There’s a massive housing estate there and not 1 single pub 🤷🏻♂️
A great idea for a video! I’ve got a few books like that, so I might “borrow” the concept! 25 is not a bad result and only one demolition - although that’s one too many.
Hi Steven thanks for showing round all those pubs, it’s nice to see most of them still going strong and you showed quite a few pubs round my neck of the woods too. atb mate cheers Glenn, it’s a big 👍from me
Interesting video, Stephen. It's good to see it's not all doom and gloom, and there are plenty of pubs still open. I can't believe you found the only pub in the UK that serves a nice pint of Carling 😂😂😂 Our village used to have 5 pubs and 4 clubs (working mens club, officials club [so the colliery management didn't have to mix with the miners], servicemens club and a social club) when we moved here. Now we're down to 1 pub and 3 clubs.
Ha Ha...can't believe i said " a nice pint of Carling"...it was ok i suppose...it was wet and hit the spot...sounds like the pubs around your way have taken a real battering
Hi thanks for sharing. Our favourite pub closed during covid and we miss it so much. Although a few near us have closed many have opened and appear to be doing well. The small village ones seem to have been worst hit. We appreciate you trying out all the pubs in order to bring this to us. Best wishes hope you get a pint or too over the weekend Best wishes Dave and Dawn ❤️
Hi Dave and Dawn...hope you are well...horrible when your favourite pub closes...no doubt we will have a pint or two this weekend as we are heading down to Colchester for a music festival...thanks folks.
Great film mate, well jealous of your bookcase. Sadly I fear the British pub as we all knew it is almost non existent. A lot now are gastro pubs with similarly high prices. I miss the old spit and sawdust pubs. Good to see a lot in the book are still open, I think it's worse in some areas compared to others.
Thanks Stuart..yeah sadly the old spit and sawdust pubs have all gone now...i suppose we are quite lucky to still have a few decent pubs still open though.
Very interesting you put some work into that 👍 lots of pubs have gone around us in the potteries there were loads around the factories and potbanks mainly the big eateries now .. but we do know a very nice canal pub that hasn't changed for a hundred years 👌
Hi Steve, interesting survey that and i bet enjoyable going in and sampling the beers, just heard another pub in the Wolds has closed down the one at Rothwell which was always a good one to call in when walking from Nettleton/Caistor, enjoy your weekend walk cheers nigel
Heyyyy guys ..interesting video…well where I live the sproughton wild man shut in lockdown after over 50years 😢loved that pub ..good Carvery 😊oh by the way steven I’ve got covid bad looking forward to the next video 😊
Hi Ruth...sad to hear about the Sproughton wild man...a group of us used to spend a fair bit of time in there when we left school..hope you get rid of that horrible covid soon Ruth...Thanks Steven
Interesting Project Steven...just in our little area in Fairfield in Buxton we had Four and they have gone and all within a square mile, and Buxton has had even more closures...The reason they are shutting is the price of the drinks...Nobody can afford to visit the local two or three times a week anymore like they used to and I also think all day drinking hours helped to raise prices to cover overheads...The good old local where they used to call time at 10.30 are all gone because people just can't afford it anymore...The only places that seem to do well are the mass market ones like Wetherspoons with totally zero atmosphere...I do miss those nights when someone used to play the piano and we all joined in a good old sing song...Cheers Les.🙂👍
Thanks Les...great to get feedback like this...a real shame that so many pubs have closed around your area...the good old days for pubs seem long gone...cheers Steven
I live in the Wild West, a Saloon in every town. The saloon from my hometown in Colorado, The Old Dillon Inn, became an historical landmark and they built a mall around it. Like here's an old haunted building, better build a shopping mall. Lol
A saloon in every town..ha ha...do they have the old swinging doors and slide your drink down the bar to you?...cheers for watching and taking time to comment
Hi 😊 glad to see there are quite a few still open. Only a few closed. I haven’t noticed many closed near me but I do find some now offer takeaways to maybe to increase there business.
Very interesting Steve, I was visiting village pubs with the Leicester footpath association as they start and finish their walks from them which I’m sure helps as they do walks 4 days a week but not been out with them lately. It is sad a a bit embarrassing when you visit a pub and they are struggling and maybe your pints not very good. The pub in the lovely village of Grimston recently went through a community buy out which is great, have you been to the community pub in Bamford yet that’s really good. On my last walk I visited 3 community shops in 4 days so also good. I think not every pub can survive things have changed a lot which has also led to the new ale bars which in Leicestershire we have a lot of them mostly all new ventures and not in the old pubs. One village pub locally a free house sells only a local small local breweries beer and like others I visit it maybe on the motorbikes with others because the beer is fantastic. All in all the quality of beer has improved massively in the last 10 years so we are very lucky. In fact we are spoilt for good choice around here Steve. Cheers 🍻
Great idea for a video! It’s an interesting topic. Thanks so much for putting in all that painstaking research in checking the pubs are still open and having a pint to be sure 😂😂
Interesting video, I don't go in to pubs as much as I used to so I'm trying to do more now. I've got one of those books for the dales- I might have to see what's still open😊
As far as I know only one pub in dereham has shut ( the standard ) are pubs closing due to cost of living crisis ? It's expensive to drink out in pubs now ,I think possibly people tend to drink at home more . Interesting video mate
Really nice and interesting video Steven and Karen. 5 out of 30 closed isn’t bad hey. I thought it was going to be more than that. I was thinking of doing a video of the pubs of Ashton under Lyne. See you soon. Take care mate. 👍
Canny vlog steve nice and different yeah would say I'm happy with that mate 25 year and only a few gone wish I was younger I would do a vlog and have a pint in every one hahaha😂 someone else driving off course mmmm I have got a peddle bike 😂😂😂 finished the vlog with a beer class my friend I never dink myself in pubs but always make the effort to pop in a few when I'm away good stuff use them or loose them
If by Great British Pubs you mean pubs tied to breweries, screwing them in addition to the onerous pressure of customs and excise, then yeah… they’re probably disappearing. If you take it to mean privately owned premises, brewing on site, give the pub-goer what they want, I think they’re opening up everywhere and often thriving.
Thanks Kevin...being a country boy from Suffolk in the 70's and 80's these were the days when pubs were thriving...there are lots of little successes these days with micro breweries poping up, but on the whole a dying trade..but i guess some pubs will have a great weekend thanks to the footie
Yep, as you say… a dying trade. But honestly, this only dawned on me recently: dying not because people don’t want somewhere nice to meet their friends or take their family; but dying because breweries that are generally Plc’s want to make more and more money for their shareholders. Of course the Treasury want their cut as well. We can blame recent trends, eg credit crunches, recessions, smoking bans, pandemic lockdowns, but realistically it’s been a long, gradual decline. A hundred years ago, most pubs would have been privately-owned, the publican would’ve brewed and sold his own ale, perhaps sold/swapped some with other pubs locally, and was happen to earn a living that way. Might have even lived on the premises with his or her (okay, generally his) family. Nowadays leisure is industry first and foremost; the hospitality comes second, if the punter is lucky. Sad that some beautiful buildings with interesting histories and convivial atmospheres have been lost to other uses… but the pub has evolved; I know of bars in old garages and in storage units on car parks and one that doubles as a pizza restaurant (kind of Italian tapas).
Sadly the real price of serving a pint in a pub is £10. The only way to keep on going is to do “extras”. Glad you’re looking into this, it’s a British tradition that has been around for centuries, can it really be vanishing now, under our watch? Yeah all shut here sadly. Mostly under the Tories and there budget cuts to policing and late night licences. Nice to see so many open on yours mind, think country pubs are doing better given the affluence of the areas they are located in. The middle class areas are always going to dig their expensive pocket heels in harder. The front line, our towns, cities and cheap resorts are all failing on there bottoms. Well at least we can expect a lot of these pubs will be new housing dwellings in the upcoming years. Thats a great percentage still open Steven, what a lovely affluent, supporting area. I cant imagine growing up without this rite of passage going into the pub, it’s unheard of now (part of the problem) Spot on video mate and a very important topic that needs highlighting more, we are loosing our heritage, pubs are our life blood.
Thanks folks..really enjoyed reading your comment..seeing peoples comment makes me think we are lucky here to have so many pubs still doing ok...the big town pubs will be raking it in this weekend with the football but the small country pubs are being hit hard....youngsters don't seem to go out drinking now like they used to in my day...we used to go out most nights even if we only had a tenner..i think it is the older punters keeping lots of pubs going...
@@atrampinthehills.841the whole dating, socialising thing is lost on younger generations. There is an app for everything. If you wanted to find a girlfriend or meet up with your mates it was all done down the pub. Now it’s all tinder and Netflix! I feel sorry for the younger generations. Scary to think when our generations and the next few are gone it will likely spell the end of the British pub.
its a crying shame steve, alot of the pubs round my end are pretty expensive, just shy of six quid for a real ale, then you go hundred yards down the road and its 3.50 real ale,not the same brew may i say,but yeah beggers belief.
