Hello, I am hoping to recover a very old film from 1977. In his earlier days, my dad was a jet boat racer and he tells me that winning the 1977 world championship was his greatest lifetime achievement. The race was on the Rio Balsas river, and apparently, there was a film made to capture the race. At the time he didn't think too much about it, but now, he would want nothing more than to watch that film! If anybody can help me recover the film I would be willing to pay GOOD MONEY for it. Some names that may help you to track down the film: - Fred Krunik (Teammate and owner of the boat) - Paul Newman (American celebrity in the race) - Glen Sather (Noteable Canadian hockey GM he raced against) - Peter Pocklington (Noteable Canadian businessman he raced against) - Bud Nowicki (My dad) His boat was "El Coyote" (boat 307 in this video). Title of the race was VII: Maraton Nautico Internacional del Rio Balsas. If anybody has a clue to where I might find this film please message me.
My father, Hugh, was the engine builder/mechanic for the El Coyote boat. In the he is the guy who looks at the camera and says "smile, I might found the leak", Unfortunately both he and my mother have passed. I only remember photos of the Mexico race, no movies. They had quite a bit of trouble getting out of Mexico after the race. I remember your father Bud, he had heavy equipment.
I had always heard about the most grueling of all boat races, namely the Rio Balsas Marathon. I remember a Starcraft Boats brochure from 1978-1980 or so selling a Jetboat hull which was reputedly a Hull which had won the Rio Balsas race. Sorry I can' help you with the video but perhaps there's a Wide World of Sports episode with the footage you seek.
I bet that was the last time "Slats" got into a boat driven by his boss,Peter Pocklington @ 9:11 Nice to see them running some of the old fibreglass hulls.
